Two points - 1. This is still a drama and they have to get ppl to watch it. Let’s be honest, will Chinese masses watch a drama with an unattractive looking person? I mean they do skin smoothing, serious makeup to cover any trace of facial hair on the men, etc.
2. I’ve known plenty of ppl in irl who are beautiful but have such low self esteem that they think they’re ugly and not worthy to be loved. At my lowest point, I thought I was ugly b/c of all the judgement of ppl around me when I was growing up. With enough constant negative statements, you can internalize and believe it.
