Yeah I agree too. There seems to be a disconnect in terms of "tone" and their performances and I attribute this…
Yeah I'm happy for the FL and ML to just be a couple now - no need for obstacles or misunderstandings etc - and the main drama to come from Lee Rang's redemption arc (please!) and them all teaming up to fight the big bad! I'm def hoping for the story to lean into the the mystery/horror elements :)
I don't mind the piecemeal world building or slow reveal of the back story + big bad. Ep 5 is not so much filler as its giving us time to get to know the characters better.
i'm really enjoying everyone's individual performance too. my only thing is that everyone seems to be acting in a different drama - LDW is charming as a goofy deadpan soft boi (more sweet male leads please!), Kim Bum is having a great time chewing up the scenery and showing the wounded boy beneath the murderous killer, the fl is playing it straight as an arrow - its just that the tone of their performances don't really mesh so far.
Lee Yeon has that Grim Reaper vibe but unlike Goblin, he's the only lead who's kinds goofy and next to the super serious FL it seems a bit out of place.
I also switch up the kinds of dramas I watch so I don't fall into the drama slump! Although I've mostly watched chinese and korean dramas so far with only the odd foray into other countries - need to broaden my horizons!
It might be time for me start a Republican era drama too, I've only watched dynasty/xianxia type dramas so far but I keep hearing such good things about Arsenal Military Academy and I love me some Xu Kai...
I think the writer does such a good job of portraying the claustrophobia of living with your [nosy-ass] family in a small home. The Sa family is poor, the space is small, the walls are thin and they have a lot of resentment and historical issues they haven't worked through so they just vent their frustrations on and criticise each other. They each have to compromise their dignity in some way at work (and for the Grandpa, at home) and they take it out on each other.
I know its not always fun to watch those scenes but I think its an important theme in the show which ties into the wider intergenerational theme of young people who don't want to accept work cultures of bullying, injustice and loss of dignity just because "thats how it is" or "your elders suffered so you should too".
I guess in future episodes they'll compare and contrast the ML's situation with the FL who lives alone and doesn't seem to be in touch with her family much so far.
What about Hwayugi? LSG's character met the female lead when she was a kid as well. In Doctor, Kim Raewon's character…
I haven't seen any of those dramas but if a character is way older and gets involved in the life of the love interest when they're a kid I can't ship it coz its creepy! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't have a problem with an age gap in itself but I can't ship a romance when the younger character is a teen/young adult and/or vulnerable and the older character is a parental figure or someone with power over the younger one - thats just grooming and its gross.
I loved so much about Goblin but the main romance was pure grooming and it never sat right with me at all! Even the time jump couldn't erase their past relationship dynamic. I don't have a problem with a romantic lead being like thousands of years old and falling for a human adult but he met her when she was an actual child so the power imbalance was too much!
Same, I like the SL in Miss Truth - the ML is so arrogant - but I wish they fleshed his character out a bit more…
I didn't get why the FL fell for the ML but when she was into the SL it was completely understandable because his behaviour and affection for her made it obvious he loved her! Dammit I still ship them :(
Totally agree! I think, many complain, because none of their fave idols star in this new adaptation. I, for my…
Thanks Lily you've really sold it! After RoTaR I watched Intense Love, Reset Life/Future Secrets and Just an Encore so I need to complete my Ding Yuxi set!
