Actually in one of my comments I interpreted this ending.

Ep 30 at around 7 mins, when the ML looses his eyesight, Xiao Zhi told that first his eyes and hair will be affected, then ears, nose, internal organs and so on. Basically he will slowly approach death with constant bad symptoms in between. I know it is cruel.

Then Pe Shi got some medicine which instantly restored his eyesight but according to Pe Shi, it will also take away his martial art skill and he would become weak. It will prolong his life for 6 months and within that time they should find the medicine. Now it only helped with his eyesight but his hair was still white.... meaning that medicine couldn't stop all the bad symptoms of the poison.

Now regarding when he closed his eyes whether he died or not. I think even though Pe Shi's medicine restored his eyesight, but according to the nature of the poison, he should have slowly lost his hearing ability, sense of smell and should have been in a miserable condition before dieing. I mean Pe Shi's medicine could not have prevented everything and just directly make him die.

But he looked fine before closing his eyes, only his hair was white. He said he will be with her in all lives. So, I am assuming he was just tired and not dead. He said he will be with her always as they were also not sure about whether they will get the medicine on time or not. He wanted to console her.

Later they miraculously got the medicine on time and he was saved. As Pe Shi said it would be almost like a miracle to find a 10 year old plant as it takes 10 years for a plant to be ready to be used. But maybe a plant was there and no one saw it before or something like that. Or he managed to live longer than 6 months and by that time the plant had grown for 10 years and the medicine was ready to be used and he got cured.

So the last scene where both are smiling together is a HE for me.

Ok. After watching episode 30 again, this is my take about the ending as a SE or a HE. It seems like solving a mystery to me now I hope my guess is right.

But I think he looked better and even acted better in other dramas example in DOL, and Tale of Love and Loyalty. Just my opinion.

DOL also has kind of a HE but difficult to understand it. I explained its ending in one of the comments here. People need to watch the last scene carefully to understand it.

O yaa.

Actually what i understood about DOL was that he was not a different person, he was the same person but the story started again. As in, they were again transported back in time and this time maybe they will achieve their happy ending.

In the last episode you can see the scenes were going in reverse direction, meaning they were again going back in time. Next scene they met again. So, the story started again. He was smiling at her. If they were strangers, at least he won't smile at her and she won't be excited to see him. I may be wrong though.

Yes.. That too it was not out an out HE. We had to crack our brains to understand that.

Even I prefer HE. And they did the same to another Richard's drama. I don't know why he always have such odd endings. He is never shown happily happy, if that even makes sense.

Another thing.

Also, I just saw in one of the comments here that the original novel had a clear HE. But here the director chose to show it differently.

Actually they didn't show him die. They were talking in a serene place. Then, he closed his eyes and placed his head on the FL's shoulder. So, we don't know for sure if he died or was just tired.

Some secs later the FL also closed her eyes. They didn't show her mourning as such.

Now you may think both died and met in heaven and smiled SATISFACTORY as they are together for eternity.
Or both are alive and they got the cure for his poison which was rare to find, as was said by someone in the show, but not impossible to find. HE
Or he is dead and she is alive. SE

I choose to believe that he was just tired and so closed his eyes and later she too closed her eyes to rest.

Actually the fact that they got time to spend time together is also sufficient as both said they would like to spend quality time with each other. Doesn't matter whether they get the cure or not. That was how they felt towards the end. They knew nothing was certain but wanted to enjoy life as long as they could with each other. They went together to find the cure.

Unlike other similar dramas, I don't think they are showing it as a romantic behaviour in this drama. It is more like an obsessive lover.

Anyways, in the other dramas the MLs don't go to such extent and shown as romantic behaviour. Not that I have watched.

Not to forget, once she tried to kill him to protect herself. So, he also asked the physician to do something to her so that she looses all her martial art talent and so can't attack him to save herself in future.

They showed her pleading him not to do that. Her face was full of tears. But he didn't care. So basically she became physically weak and powerless, and had to undergo a lot of pain due to that process. The physician said it will be painful for her but he didn't care. He just wanted her to stay with him at any cost.

It was shown few scenes before the memory loss.

Not only that . He did so much more before that. Spoiler below.
