Yeah I mean overall he made a very smart decision based on his and her status to get what he wants...her. It's the epitome of ask for forgiveness not permission. It still dismisses her not just as a woman, but as a human being. That is the lesson I think she will teach him. He fascinates me because he isnt one dimensional and has an actual character arc forming. We have a proper character for a ML for once lol. He's playing it SO well too as an actor...chef's kiss 🤌

Completely agree. I've been watching Cdramas since the early 2000s and this is giving me so much nostalgia on how good historicals can and should be. It's one of the best I've seen in a long time, and I found it so randomly too lol.

This drama sends me into a trance every episode. Not only do I think it's the best of the year, but it's the best historical drama I've seen in a long time. If you haven't started it get on it there is clearly so much to discuss 😉

* I do want to add on because a lot of people aren't happy with the ML right now. It is historical, it was pretty common for rich powerful men to just take what they want. He also viewed her as an intellectual opponent throughout the series always trying to out scheme or suspecting her of scheming. Then he has proved that he is incredibly emotionally immature and insecure based on being a mommy's boy and what he went through with his first wife. If you look at his arc as a whole it actually makes a lot of sense for his character and will make the rest of the drama very interesting lol. I just look at his entire character before getting too upset about this. I kind of suspected this is what he'd do. I honestly assumed he was going to make her freedom contingent on marrying him lol 😆

I feel very sad for Lanxiang. The imperial decree was the ultimate no choice for her. She has been tossed around…
For me I wasn't really surprised. It makes sense for the time and for his character. He always tries to do the right thing and be a good person but what he has also shown time and time again is that he's very insecure and emotionally immature. He's treated her constantly as a intellectual opponent, someone to out scheme and this was probably not the way to go but it makes sense lol. It'll make things interesting for sure lol.

Dropped ep 5. I give it blah/10. It wasn't bad enough to that I wouldn't recommend it, I just could not attach myself enough to finish it. It's a shame, but oh well. Give it a try, some people like it...I just did not 😬. Everything felt SO reigned in.

I have zero notes. This drama is fantastic. Even the politics of it is so well written and very relatable to modern day corruption at it's finest. All of the cast is doing so good as well. Unless it falls off this could be one of my tops if not the top of the year. Highly Recommend:)

Just started. It's fine so far I think it'll be fun. Dangerous Liaisons adaptations are always intriguing. I will say as much as I love JCW, I don't think he is the right fit for this. I have never seen this man do wrong and he's beyond sexy, but when he does that eye squint seduction look in this I can't help but laugh lol 🤣

Woah the comments blew up, not surprised. I'll push back a little here. Me saying he associated with her as a…
My first sentence in my last comment...

"Attraction is different then choosing to be in a relationship surely you know that. "

I am fully aware that attraction doesn't need to fall into societal norms, but engaging in a relationship with someone usually does. It's two different things, and I am also bisexual so I am fully aware of societal taboos in relation to attraction.

Lets not make me into something I am not here, just because you don't like my opinion. I am talking about forming a relationship between someone 31 and 19, who knew her as a minor that is well beyond just attraction. I have never said he was weird just for being attracted to her. He went WAY beyond that.

We had a good conversation don't get salty because we don't agree I don't think your opinion is an "ill opinion" it's just different from mine. I looked at this conversation with fondness as as successful interaction between two people on the internet who disagree. I did not not call you a pedo protector and you did not tell me to off myself in honor of your Oppa like everyone else on those thread lol. Your last comment was incredibly salty and condescending and made some unfair judgments on me that I did not appreciate. I have no problem with attraction outside of societal norms, I do have a problem with relationships like the one we have been discussing. My main opinion is just don't cross that line and you won't put yourself in these situations. As I have said time and time again he was not and is not a baby, he made all of these decisions himself. He crossed that line, and I really really hope he only crossed the line of dating a 19 year old and he didn't groom and abuse her.

Attraction is different then choosing to be in a relationship surely you know that. He will always be the pursuer because his brain was fully developed lol. They were operating on two different brain capacities...again because of the age difference. He will always hold more accountability to the start of their relationship because of that. 30 year olds should be more responsible and make better than decisions than 19 year olds. So, he could be like she's cute...but WAY too young, a responsible choice but he chose the latter.

I actually looked that up by Korean standards because I was actually looking for a cultural or even religious standard, because I am not naive enough to think my way of thinking is universal I may not agree with other standards but I do respect that cultural and religious standards exist. You are proving that by listing your countries cultural standard, but Korea's the country he is from aligns more with my views...I was actually surprised by that tbh lol. So, it really doesn't change anything in this case, but could explain why me and you don't see eye to eye on this.

But what's missing is what else would a 31 year old successful man want with a 19 year old woman? I cannot think of one psychologically sound reasoning why he thought to pursue her, and I can't let go of the fact that he knew as a minor it makes it even weirder, I'm sorry it does. Leonardo Dicaprio famously has that 25 year old meme attached to him, and I bet if you asked him did you know any of these girls when they were minors he would look at you like you were nuts lol 🤣. That's even too far for him lol. I'm sorry but the dancing around how weird AF this is is a lot. I have four older brothers none of them have dated anyone younger than 5 years from them, my husband is only 2 years older than me. Why would a successful 31 year old, admittedly massively attractive man, want to be with a 19 year old girl? How can I not be suspicious of that with or without evidence? Even in South Korea that has a deeply ingrained patriarchal structure that age gap is still not the norm...quick Google search (is a 10 year age gap normal in Korea) gives you that's it's more common in 30s and 40s but looked at with skepticism and as inappropriate for someone 20 and younger to date someone 10 years older. So, cultural is out as well, which actually surprised me lol.

I would hope you would at least understand why people are still suspicious and always will be because of this. I don't think you can get there though, which is fine. It was a good conversation though lol.

I actually would consider her a risk from a psychological standpoint. I think that is something we can agree on that her family did not seem to much concern about her at all, and she was financially responsible for them from my understanding. It wasn't until she died that they seem to need another means of support...cough...manufactured evidence...cough cough lol. She did not seem to have the best upbringing and not many people to really rely on. She would be an easy target imo. That's actually the main reason I have the psychological concerns about their relationship because I feel like she would be a big risk factor for an abusive relationship, especially with someone that much older, at only 19 with as many responsibilities that she had on her shoulders as well.

I wonder if their is a psychological analysis of this case? Not sure if you know. Mostly it seems to be internet discourse and people like you who look at it form a legal standpoint. I would be very intrigued how a psychologist would look at this case.

It's how she spoke about it that started the controversy. I haven't seen anything aside from online fringe that blames her for her grandfathers crimes. She spoke about the history so casually, and ignorantly. I do understand that she didn't know her grandfathers history entirely but she knew the history of the time. Well I hope she did. I am from the US and even I know the Korean/Japanese history...heck it's in several dramas lol.

That being said she did apologize for that and owned up to all of it. I think her apology was genuine, it was very good. I do not think she is a traitor/sympathizer, or supports any part of that history. And I genuinely believe she is reflecting on how she spoke and her own family history. So, I think they are going over the top with it. I get the anger but after her apology it just seems a bit much now. I'm petty enough that if this was me, and my career was completely tanking after offering a genuine apology, I would be finding a Japanese agent and staring in J-dramas out of spite....fine you think I'm a traitor, watch this lol 🤣.
