Yes, there's romance but it ends in tragedy. While the leads fall in love with each other, their love is not enough to change ML's selfish political desires, FL gets heartbroken for ML's constant betrayal, she ends up killing herself and in her last letter she asked to not be buried beside the ML as she never wants to be with him again. ML regrets his actions and I believe he dies from grief, there is a bonus chapter of being in the "after life" where ML is trying to find the FL but realizes she has reincarnated and is living a happy life. He decides to leave the world alone accepting their fate has ended. 😭😭

I really took a shot at this, I was thinking how bad can it be...... but OMG its the most dull and boring snooze fest I have ever come across, its like watching paint dry. There is no chemistry with the leads, its like all they do is stand there in pretty clothes and exchange stiff dialogue. The FL spends more time with her dad than the ML. 😑

Well if you really wanna know, Xie Zheng found out that Changyu's family might've played a role in his father's death so he broke up with her, but their separation is very short because he can't bear to stay away from her, he physically and mentally tortures himself during their break up. Eventually he goes to find her and they reconcile.

So far it looks like they get together much earlier in the drama whereas in the novel they don't get together until reuniting so maybe there won't be an actual "rejection", we'll just have to wait and see lol

One thing that annoys me with Netflix subs is that they fail to use appropriate honorifics. For example: Changning calls Changyu "older sister" in Chinese but the subs uses Changyu's name so it sounds like Changning is just calling her sister by name. Another one is Changning calls Xie Zheng "brother in law" (so cute when she calls him that) but the subs says "Sir". For the non-Chinese speakers, this takes away the familiarity of their relationships 😤. I imagine the subs on Iqiyi and Tencent are more accurate.

Xie Zheng will eventually leave the village after confessing to Changyu and being rejected by her. She thought he was recruited as a soldier and various things happened to her village after so she decides to go find him, they reunite at the infantry and found out that he is not a low status solider but a General and Marquis of Wu'an

In the novel he teases Xie Zheng alot about Changyu, Xie Zheng even bragged about how good she is to Gongsun 🤣🤣
