In real life, no. In a story, yes. Because it's all about how it all came about. Mei Lin, being astute and detail oriented, should be able to come to conclusions why her man was the way he was. She had listened well when they conversed. HE listened to her and gave her things through their conversation, so why couldn't she be smart and think things through too?

But. He was going to be cruel to be kind and let her go because we need a big misunderstanding and some heartbreak. And in the end, either she would stab him or he would be alone, as all wuxias liked to end. But hey, they might surprise me and give me a happy ending. I'll wait for spoilers for the last two episodes before watching. I did the same with Journey to You and Journey to Love and never regretted stopping at a happy point and not watch the wuxia ending.

Well, yes, I know they must have modified it. I do think she will marry XiyanGreenTeaPrince (TM) for one reason or another, though (not love). And yes, I saw the few shots of MRXH in agony and there was one of her looking at him while he was on a bridge sobbing. My poor boy is going to suffer, sob.

I think in 22 MRJH has to give up Mei Lin to save her (XiyanGreenTeaPrince has the cure) and to get her away, he tells her everything was pretense on his part. And of course, the ultimate pain for her, he revealed to her who he really was.
