Because he doesn't want a jealous Pei to retaliate against him by making life difficult for her. He did that to protect Xiu.

Why would you want someone so nice to end up with Pei, a man whose values system is the complete opposite of hers? A man who continues to disregard/disrespect her request to not be used as a tool in his battle against Yu? A man in whom she has zero romantic interest?

I was thinking the same thing! Unless it's a family heirloom, keep the ring!!! But now some states in the US, I've heard, made it a law that the ring must be returned if the man wants it back. SMH
