AI. We haven't quite reached this level with robotics & computers yet - the AI capable of learning, thinking logically and building on experience in order to reach conclusions not already programmed. This has of course been the subject of numerous SF stories, some of them excellent.
If Shin3 sees the mom as important and safe then who's to say it's NOT love? Sentience may include the ability to feel partiality towards people & things, as well as aversion. It's an ongoing debate in computer science, in fact.

Yeah, that mother ticks me off. SHE is a robotic scientist - she knows full well that she created an AI - artificial intelligence ie a SENTIENT android capable of independent thought, able to learn on its own. How in the WORLD can she be so very cold towards this substitute son of hers??? The 'dad' there obviously cares for Shin3, AI or not. As you say, she sees this creation of hers growing and becoming independent and her reaction is just fear and a desire to quash this new sense of self. I don't like her.

I'm so NOT bored with the very interesting android story and his developing sense of self. Of course it could easily go sideways but that's what's fascinating to me.
