“Keeping the essence of the characters”? Certainly not in Pei Yan’s case or anyone of his clan. He has been…
People knew of PY's feelings for JC in the novel, or rather his attachment to her. Even Wei Zhao used her as a bargaining chip (or an excuse of a bargaining chip) to get Pei Yan's cooperation. He stole her away and returned her for that reason. And he told Uncle Ping that he was wondering what about JC made PY to fall for her. Even when she came back pregnant, his mother and wife assumed it was his child. Everyone knew.

He is obsessed with JC still, but he is still very ambitious. And he still wants her and his ambition. Those base things are still the same. They really toned down the desperation of the people in the show and the extremes and cruel means they had to take to survive and achieve their goals. And sometimes, it makes me sad because non-novel readers won't understand the full weight of what they are going through. But then I have to understand that the audience may not take it well, seeing it on screen.
They changed many things in the show. But I think if they manage it well, it'll still be a good story. And they also seem to be keeping the essence of the characters, so they are doing well.
JC is intelligent, but she is very innocent and inexperienced. She lived a sheltered life in her little mountain…
She can't best him either. He looks gentle and meek, and he is, but he is very smart and a military strategist. He's PY's army military strategist, as well as doctor. He is just nice. But in the end, loving or being with someone is looking in the same direction as that person. We can't say who she should be with just because.
Ugggh... I don't know how I feel about this. Like, do I want to drop this or do I keep watching. Not huge fan…
JC is intelligent, but she is very innocent and inexperienced. She lived a sheltered life in her little mountain village and had no contact with any kind of politics. So the fact that she is holding her own to this extent is remarkable. PY and WZ are very experienced liars and actors that have huge and very risky goals and purposes, with the burdens of many on their shoulders. So they are vicious and will do anything to achieve their goals. There is no way she can best them at this long game they have been playing.
Pharaoh, a very historical figure, Pei Yan is way ahead of him 😂
To escape the man, you have to have a knowledge of places he doesn't and flee when you get your best shot. And then proceed to live in hiding forever. He does not quit.
There should be other consorts. I skimmed through the book, so I don't really know, but his actual sister died in Yueluo before her was sent to Hua dynasty. She ran herself through his master's sword to kill his last tie to Yueluo, so that he would be able to look ahead and fight for the people.
I skimmed through it, so something of that sort. He obviously was not a willing participant, especially since it started from his boyhood, but he had to pretend to be willing. And also flattered him a lot.
Reading the novel is like having several come back to reality hits. Everyone pursued their goals and purposes, even when they were forced to use their bodies to advance their causes. The book did not hold back at all.
The emperor had a thing for beautiful people and ml was a stunningly beautiful man. So since he was 12 years old, he had to be a bed companion for the emperor. And everyone knew about it and had disdain for him. It's terribly sad. The Yuelue people had to send male children to that empire as tribute to be male companions. They were looked down on by everyone.
The ending for the novel is actually so so suitable for the story. And I really can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope they keep it. But they removed a very big part of why it was suitable for the ml. I'm happy they removed it though, because it made me so angry everytime I read it.

PY remains consistent till the end. He doesn't turn evil.
