You're right about the primary motivation behind any project. If they could fire every actor and produce it using AI, they would. I'm specifically talking about projects benefiting one actor more than the other due to the current stage of their development. Project volume benefits an on-the-job learner like Zhao Qing more than WXY who has the advantage of a formal performance / acting education from an elite institution and the connections attached to it. Every project for someone like Zhao Qing is a chance to learn off of those around her. It's also a chance to fine tune her skills and develop her craft. By contrast, many projects provide no value to Wang Xingyue because what's required is well below his skill level. He can essentially sleepwalk the production.
As I said, I've been impressed with ZQ's improvement. If she went back and played her role in SOT again, she'd do it ten times better. I have immense respect for hardworking on-the-job learners who get after it.
I'm a huge admirer of old Hollywood (the name implies it), and the greats of HW's golden period have a fairly balanced distribution of classical training actors who entered the industry with formal training, and those who essentially served an apprenticeship while on the job. Grinding and making the most of every opportunity. Those with formal training as actors tended to explode out of the gate, delivering acclaimed performances from the get-go. Those who were green and had no training, took advantage of studio resources and plied their trade in the Bs or in the As in support roles. If their star rose before they fully developed as actors, they appeared in A-list box-office-generating projects that leaned into lighter themes (similar to an Idol drama). The formally trained actors tended to hit their peak performance levels early, and the actors that learnt as they went along bloomed later. However, peak to peak, both groups were very comparable. The formally trained actors perhaps had a larger peak period window, but not by much.
So, theoretically, Zhao Qing could be just as good as WXY one day. It all really depends on the actor and how hard they work.
