I agree, that was certainly the primary issue. It's a double-edged sword carrying on from a popular IP. On the one hand, you get a hype boost by tapping into a pre-existing fan-base. On the other, you invite comparisons and an aspect of being constantly measured against the past smash hit. Fair or unfair, it is what it is. Tian Tian did receive some criticism for her portrayal. Having watched 'Rebirth" in its entirety, I do believe some of it was warranted. She seemed to struggle with more complex scenes, requiring her to exhibit conflicting emotions and inner turmoil. It didn't help that some of the support cast had similar scenes and executed them better. I got a little carried away and posted on her MDL page that she was crushing it, and tbf, she was indeed crushing it early on before those more nuanced scenes. Overall, she still did a lot right, so I won't delete my comment. There were scenes she acted superbly, no other actress could've done better, and there were scenes that came out flat and missed the mark. I also got carried away with Deng Enxi's performance in "Eight Hundred" and posted something similar early on her page, but Ancy followed through right till the end and put in a comprehensive performance.

Ai Mi, who is my absolute favourite of the group, will face that judgment now as she steps up to take on lead roles x3. I believe in her, but I'm also well aware there is the potential that she may get exposed / struggle to correctly display the right emotion in a particular scene. Perhaps the audience may find something unconvincing. That's acting, it comes with the territory. I remember an uninspired performance by Meryl Streep in "Still of the Night" (1982). It happens. As long as they learn from it, they'll bounce back strong. Looking forward to seeing what Ai Mi has in store for us and following / supporting her acting journey.

Well said. Ren Min is well suited to this role and fits the styling of this era. She receives unnecessary flak for her looks. Personally, I find her to be expressive and lively, and she exudes a natural charm on-screen.

I just wanted to add one more observation. Another element to this outstanding drama that really stood out to me was the tragic layering revealed in the finale. Although morally, father and son had drifted far apart. In terms of intelligence, resourcefulness, and finely tuned instincts, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. CH was, without a doubt, veteran investigator CHB's toughest opponent. He likely would've made an outstanding police officer.
