He was considered the knight in shining armour for the empire. His one true love FL became the concubine of the tyrant, he was depressed but he still fought back.
This was the novel's approach. It never cared to show us what the steps Duan would take to gain power, and because he is the ML no one really cares as long as he wins!
Another approach- Its possible the real Duan was not as trash as this one is! ML and FL's transmigration might have changed a lot of stuff!
