Not sure if I am late to the party… just watching the trailer I can feel this drama would be the epic drama of the year. Question, why I see only wuxia tag? , from the trailer, I thought it is xianxia one.
I anticipated this drama before it came out because I liked both leads but I had to wait patiently until it finished before binge-watching it all because I hate waiting and avoid coming here to get the spoiler. And wow, this is a masterpiece! There isn’t a dull moment, no predictable plot and the characters stay true to their beliefs in a good way possible. Even the villains have valid reasons for their actions and the ending was satisfying for me even if some people might not like it because it didn’t turn out the way they expected. This isn’t the usual C-drama where siblings constantly fight for the throne or the lead automatically becomes ruler just because they are the protagonist. That’s why in my opinion, it feels so fresh. People in this drama are allowed to choose the life they want, the country owes them nothing. Susha is a newly established country with a long journey ahead and I think this ending suits the story perfectly. There’s no right or wrong, it’s simply fate as the title of the story suggests.
The only issue I had was that too much happened in the Jinxiu Kingdom near the end. Many viewers found the so-called “toxic couple” exciting, but honestly, I couldn’t see why their relationship was praised as if the emperor and the sister had done the best thing throughout the drama which they clearly did not. The main leads carried the entire story with their “genuine” relationship but some people seemed to forget that, because it didn’t excite them enough. If this toxic couple had been the main focus of the story, viewers might have criticized the drama heavily, turning it into just another soap opera about lovers and affairs something I’ve seen many times before and found far more troublesome than exciting. The drama would have become overacted and melodramatic, ultimately not worth watching at all. And if you’re looking for that kind of “toxic crazy lover” storyline, there are plenty of short C-dramas that follow this trope.
Anyway, this is by far the best drama I’ve enjoyed in recent years. Kudos to the cast, the director, the writer, and the crew. It isn’t an S+ budget drama with no marketing by iQiyi but it’s clear they crafted it with the care of a true masterpiece from the costumes and locations to the action scenes and meaningful scripts and dialogue. Every moment has significance, it’s not just random chit-chat to fill time.
I enjoy analyzing stories and characters and this drama gives me plenty to think about. That’s why I feel the story is solid and never loses momentum from start to finish, except those soap-opera moments, thankfully, they didn’t appear early, otherwise I would have dropped it already. The soundtrack also perfectly complements the drama. For me, this drama is a perfect 10/10!

There’s no need for him to suddenly transform into someone who says, “Oh, people need me, I have to be the emperor, I’m destined to be the greatest king.” Even though he’s not the emperor, he still helps his sister rule the country. As he once said to his father, the same principle he stands by until the very end, he remains loyal to his honest beliefs, just as he always has. It’s not like he abandons his sister to govern alone and she also experiences meaningful character development throughout the drama. And why can’t a woman who once took the wrong path change and take on greater responsibility? If that were the case then people would never have the chance to grow or redeem themselves at all.
What I particularly like about this drama is that the writer values the female characters, whether good or flawed. Each of them undergoes meaningful character development, which strongly contradicts with your comment that there is none. It’s not just following a predictable path. The way he carries himself, his posture, the way he walks, and the way he speaks, truly embodies the image of a prince. I honestly thought you were joking when you said he has no aura. When he walks into the palace court and everyone becomes terrified, or when he talks to his father , those scenes are absolutely captivating to watch. I don’t see any problem with his smirk; it’s part of his character’s personality. Maybe his baby face makes you think he looks too soft or even a bit clownish at times , yes, that might be his weak point, his face looks too gentle for the role, but he’s still doing a far better job than many other actors who’ve appeared in more historical dramas than he has.
