Well, it's okay if you don't like it. If you expect TD to be romance-driven, better not watch it. But the rating whether it's high or low is due to people's opinion. You're entitled to like/dislike a drama just as everybody else is entitled to their own preference.

I don't even know their huge age gap if it wasn't mentioned in the comment. When I watched TD the first time, I could see that XFF looks older but never thought she was that older. Their chem was out of the roof. It was acting done right & script writing was the best with their bantering a.k.a flirting

I don't think it was to make us pity them. It might just to show us that everyone has a background story. The villains aren't two dimensional. They didn't become some lunatics, loathsome spineless coward, or vicious step-mom without a driving force that shaped them the way they are now.

I assume she didn't want to go to Dai & because the emperor forced her, she had to. Then her misery being treated as slave made her hatred toward the emperor (Great Yan's) solidified. She would do anything (incl sacrificing innocents) to help King Cheng overthrown the current emperor. It's just my presumption watching her background story. She was pitiful but it doesn't condone her actions now.
