i think every great drama or movie always had a sad, bittersweet ending directly or indirectly. And everyone remember…
Hm. Not sure I agree. Every movie or drama I have loved had a satisfying ending. That can be happy, sad, somewhere in between. Depends a lot on the genre. Satisfying means it tells the story completely, and that the ending lingers long enough to feel final, but not too long - it feels finished.
Sometimes sad endings feel like a cheap cop-out. I’ve seen some sad endings that completely destroy everything the rest of the story has built and I remember them still - because they left such a bad aftertaste. And I remember some sad endings that are devastating, but still satisfying, because the narrative makes it clear this was the moment the whole journey was leading to (but it doesn’t feel like a waste)… these are the good sad endings.
I get the feeling that if this drama is sad in the end, it will be the latter scenario. But it’s still early days yet.
Wish I could get into this. Just can't. Dropped after Ep 2. Can't stand either of the main characters. Did like…
Each to their own. It’s the main characters that are the biggest draw for me. They are so imperfect, and have so much more personality than many of the MCs of other historical dramas I’ve seen.
Is there any disturbing scenes?? that they change the age preference
There’s some death. A few swear words. The most disturbing scene is a flashback to some school bullying in a middle episode (though there’s some worse violence in other scenes, but those are just straightforward fight scenes). I personally think that compared to other dramas I’ve seen on Disney and Netflix, it’s pretty mild.
In general the themes are not disturbing. And emotionally, I didn’t personally find anything distressing (disclaimer, I regularly watch crime thriller dramas with lots of murder scenes so)
I remember the ML actor having excruciatingly bad acting in Alchemy of Souls. Permanently bland expression and lengthy scenes where I think I was supposed to feel something, but all I could do was cringe. I’m not holding out much hope that he has improved. Anyone who has seen both AoS and this, has he at all?
Otherwise, the premise sounds interesting and I vaguely remember the FL actress as being at least mildly compelling in the past. (Though it’s been some years since I’ve seen her)
This is such a Kdrama. I mean that both as a good thing, and a bad thing. The antagonists were boring, the ex-wife and particularly the childhood friend were unnecessary, and I skipped most of their scenes. The story would have been better with them cut out, and the episode count reduced. The main villain, the MIL was flat, uncompelling and her monologues were totally dull. I would've skipped more of her scenes if I could have.
Coincidences were rife. Everyone leads wildly different lives, but they are all connected in some way. This requires some suspension of disbelief, but this is more common than not in a Kdrama, so it's tolerable.
Misunderstandings happen, and they were blatantly a delaying tactic to get the drama to span more episodes. I usually hate those, and I didn't love them here. The tension wasn't super high (I think it was supposed to be, but because the revelations constantly got delayed, the tension was lost). I found it wasn't a deal-breaker.
But what makes this drama still watchable is the emotional notes of the drama. I am such a sucker for parent-child relationships, and this drama really delivered. I loved this aspect, and it was what kept me watching.
I'm not sure if I could have finished if I wasn't watching this late at night, purely as a mental distraction while I finished my crochet projects. But it was enjoyable enough, and was certainly better than a lot of the dramas that have aired in this year of 2023 anyway.
Worthwhile if you are in need of something to watch. It did not leave a bad aftertaste either.
