Good if you're okay with plot line and character inconsistencies

The world-building is fantastic, with breath-taking camera pans of stunning natural landscapes and some of the best action sequences I’ve seen in Wuxia.

Unfortunately, the show suffers from weak character development, plot holes, and a reliance on coincidences to push the story forward. The pacing is slow, and many key moments feel unearned. For example, one of the main villains is walking across a vast plain when, out of nowhere, one of the female leads just happens to be running across it too, without any clear reason.

The sects also feel strangely inactive. While a hierarchy exists, grandmasters and masters seem to do little beyond handing books to disciples. In one baffling decision, the Seven Sects, who have historically fought against the demon sects—suddenly refuse to defend innocent lives and instead take a defensive stance when the big war arrives. They even prohibit anyone above a certain cultivation level from fighting, choosing instead to lounge around, gamble, and make “comedic” small talk while their disciples die defending themselves and the sect.

Many events don’t make sense. The main character is introduced as having fake spirit roots and being unable to ascend to the Foundational level, yet when he does, nobody reacts to it. He also repeatedly defeats opponents with much higher cultivation levels with little explanation.

If you’re fine with some mindless fun and a main character who powers up despite glaring inconsistencies, it can still be an entertaining watch. But the plot holes and lack of internal logic make it hard to take seriously. I’ll see it through to the end, but it’s definitely fallen short of its potential and the promise of its wonderful world-building.

Good for a light hearted watch into a world of Wuxia

The Journey of Legend is yet another drama that showed immense potential but ultimately failed to leave a meaningful or lasting impression.

While it offers moments of entertainment, the storytelling feels weak and relies heavily on contrived coincidences and glaring plot holes to move the narrative forward. Too often, I found myself laughing- not at intended humour, but at the absurdity of the situations and the illogical decisions characters made. Their behaviour is frequently inconsistent, undermining the believability of the story and creating a sense of forced progression rather than natural development.

The acting and music are commendable and, at times, elevate the experience. Unfortunately, even strong performances and a solid soundtrack cannot compensate for the shortcomings of a poorly written script. The writing simply does not do justice to the talent involved.

Like The Immortal Ascension, I will finish this series- but more for its light-hearted value than any real narrative quality. In the end, The Journey of Legend stands as a reminder that no matter how strong the cast or production values, weak storytelling will always hold a drama back.

This hit the spot

It’s rare for me to watch a C-Drama without cringing at least once at the attempted comedy - but Guardians of Dafeng had me genuinely belly laughing more than a few times.

What began as what I thought would be a light-hearted, casual watch quickly turned into something much deeper. As the episodes went on, I found myself increasingly invested in the main character’s journey. The writing is sharp and purposeful, the scenes feel natural rather than forced, and the characters are well-rounded, distinctive, and memorable. To top it off, the soundtrack is catchy and fun—I don’t speak a word of Chinese, yet months later I can still hum the main theme.

I knew this was a standout series when I accidentally binged six episodes in a single sitting without even realising it. By the time it ended, I was left wanting more—and to me, that’s the hallmark of great storytelling.

The world-building is rich and immersive, the performances from the entire cast are top quality, and even the side characters bring their own meaningful impact to the storyline. Well, all except for one faceless mage - you’ll just have to discover that one for yourself.

Disappointing

Fangs of Fortune was a show I was genuinely looking forward to. The premise was intriguing and the first episode showed promise, but the story quickly loses steam. The dialogue feels cheesy, the fight scenes are flashy but repetitive, and the writers seem to rely too heavily on music and special effects to mask weak character development. The plot is riddled with inconsistencies that make it hard to stay invested. While the soundtrack and visuals are decent, they can’t save the show. My rule of thumb is simple: if I’m not hooked within five episodes, I drop it - and sadly, Fangs of Fortune didn’t make the cut.

The fact that this show holds an 8.6/10 rating makes me question whether reviews here are truly objective, or if people are simply giving inflated scores because of their bias toward a particular actor or actress.
