The TV ending is confusing indeed. You could assume that the last scene is Jom's dream. The title also suggests that "I (Jom) feel you (Yai) linger in the air". The drama focuses on scent and implies that Yai is always in Jom's heart and their house, so Yai said he had never left (because his soul stays there).
Having said that, some people who have read the novel gave an answer to your question. Modern-day Khun Yai (Kanthorn) is the great great grandson of Khun Lek, Khun Yai's baby brother. Kanthorn is Yai's reincarnation who gains (in dreams) the memories of his 2 past lives (Khun Yai 1920s & Commander Yai in 1600s) not long before he meets Jom in the present. In other words, the Yai we see in the last scene is Kanthorn, instead of Khun Yai, who never felt in love again after Jom's departure and died alone after waiting for Jom for decades (around 70 years, I guess). It is also worth noting that Jom only waits for his ex-bf for 2 years only.

edit: it was AMAZING, what a gem omg this deserves waaaay more recognition and for the people who were confused about the ending just like me, I'm giving a spoiler from the novel, it perfectly explains everything!
They are such young people but they are already amazing actors and they can create good chemistry too! I'm predicting a big future for them! I'm loving this drama so far! I saw them in Moonlight Chicken before this, so I'm happy that I can watch them as a main couple here.
Screaming, screaming and... more screaming! I was not expecting this combination of bl pairings, but I LOVE IT! I know ForceBook and FirstKhao from their previous works together but Neo and Mark pairing is new to me. I'm really enjoying this so far.

4 couples... of course, I will watch it for PP, they are amazing. I just hope that the other couples will have a good story and enough screen time, it's always the main problem when there are so many couples in one drama.

this drama is good imo after so many bl flops that I watched in the past few months, this one will definitely get at least an 8 from me! this drama has one of the better plots compared to some other bl dramas... and their chemistry and acting are amazing!
I kinda liked Enchante more lol but this one was also okay, I definitely saw better ones tho the story and directing were mid, but their acting was good
I'm starting this and I'm praying that they got a project with a good story. I really like both of them, they are besties in real life too. btw I'm one of those people who actually liked Enchante lol
It was okay, I guess that I was expecting more from the story because I waited for this couple's full story for such a long time, but because it's WinTeam, I still enjoyed watching it, their acting was good too! The biggest thing that I disliked is probably the number of side couples, 3/4 is too much.

It was okay, but it definitely could have been better. I had a big fat crush on Sean, whenever he was on screen I admired his beauty lol I watched a few interviews with the cast and I LOVE THIS GUY!! Linus too! I think that both couples had okay chemistry but I was expecting more from the story.
