Their romance is written so terribly I can't even call it that. And LX is always keeping this indifferent cold expressionless face when facing him ALL THE DAMN TIME omg, it's crazy. Even when he does big acts that should be meaningful to her, it's like she dgaf. She showed more emotion to Xingtang, a woman who tortured her and nearly tortured her friend to death, than her own husband.

Yes modern men in modern times might faint at that. But LJQ has seen tons of bloodshed, and so many gruesome, crazy, heart shaking battles where he never lost his courage or fainted even when his internal organs were ruptured to the point he was near death. His experience and willpower is huge. You're telling me, he would faint while his wife is in childbirth? He would at least make himself stay awake and by her side to be emotional support rather than fainting and causing a fuss that would distract her.

I am glad people are enjoying this drama but i dropped it some episodes after they went to the capital. They butchered…
Honestly, ever since the marriage and when she first met his parents and grandparents as a new bride, I thought things were starting to get weird. The way she barely said a word to them, didn't bow, acted standoffish and cold. Yes, at some point she was having flashbacks to her past, but t hat doesn't explain her being an ice berg the entire time.

She is someone who values her life and to live well. Going out of her way to be basically rude to her in laws could have had drastic consequences. Wives in those times relied on their in laws to have proper food and even charchoal to live well. If she had truly angered them and if her MIL hadn't spoken up for her, her life could have been made into a living hell and even ML wouldn't have been able to stop it. It makes no sense for someone as smart as her to act so stupid when it comes to her own survival.

The ML fainting.... it's like they just want him to be the butt of jokes now. They slowly stripped away what made him so interesting and I've heard they're going to make him die early too, while the FL lives 30 years. happily without him. Like he was just an insignificant cloud passing by in her life. Lame. The original book they had long happy lives. I don't know why the screenwriter is like this.

Your comment is tame compared to the critical analysis netizens are writing.
I would like to read some of this criticism, I've been trying to force myself to be positive and ignore these details all this time, but ugh, I can't anymore.

I think too that it showcases the screenwriters' lack of trust in the story and audience. The themes of feminism,…
EXACTLY! The first half of the drama was genuinely amazing, and we didn't need to have the themes of feminism spelled out to us like school children. We could see it through our own eyes and judge through the characters' actions and journeys.
Now, it's the opposite.

i have kind of a hot take and pls no one scream at me for it- I feel the FL is a little too closed off (and for…
I agree with this and honestly it's one of the things that have turned me off the drama.

I also think in their effort to take the red flag ML from the book and try to "redeem" him and make him palatable to a modern audience, they've gone too far to another extreme end. They made him too docile, and took away his edge, and his character that exists outside of the FL.

It's also completely unrealistic to me that a man in ancient china would 1) be a virgin until their mid 30s (?), and 2) get married only to not consummate their marriage for nearly a decade. I also think it's unrealistic for FL to have been so cold on that front for so long. She's not stupid. She knows the ML better only a few years in, and at the very least by the time of the graves scene, and more importantly, she has always been survival first; being so indifferent to the ML and her role in that family seems pretty contrary to her initial character of someone clever.

If the ML wasn't made to be as docile as a hamster and had a 180 done to his character where he's suddenly super soft and obedient, no man in that time period would have been so patient and still begging at her knees for affection after ten years of indifference.

The consummation scene was such a nothing burger and felt like the FL was just going along with the flow. I thought it would happen after the grave scene, but it doesn't until YEARS later and after the ML resigns from his high post? I understand romance isn't the focus, but there's a way to handle it so that it doesn't look so one sided and non existent.

I hope people don't react negatively to this but unfortunately I have gotten tired with some of the writing choices in this drama, especially with how the writer portrays the FL.

Some of the writing feels too unrealistic for me, like you can just tell that it's being written through a modern lens, and is a bit too on the nose, or a shallow, in-your-face preaching of feminism or anti feudalism. I agree with the principle that's being preached, but the writer went about it is taking me out of my immersion. The FL started out feeling very real to me, but now she feels less like a character, and more the the scriptwriter's mouthpiece. I'm at ep 40, so I will probably continue, and it's still a good drama. I'm just a little disappointed.

It’s a women centric drama which is my absolutely favourite kind of historical but the FL has been made into a bit of a Mary Sue, and the writing coupled with the time skips has made me lose my interest somewhat. The ML, who I didn't like at first, is ironically the most interesting character because he has had such a journey of change and growth.

Nah, I think it’s to do with more the fact that as a woman, her life is now tied to him and the family. If Jinqi…
Yes, it's in her best interest but if that was all she wouldn't go out of her way to do all these things herself. She's sent a servant out to find him and call it a day, and sit inside in the warmth. She dresses in peasant clothes and prepared her own handy dandy survival kit bag to trek out in the cold and venture in enemy lines because she only trusts herself to save him, and her heart can't be at ease if she's not out there doing everything she can to help him. She risked her life for him.

She says it's about gratitude, but the hints are already there from the past couple episodes that she's already started to fall for him. The problem is that she can't get over the hurdle in her heart: her identity and her past, but she's slowly been melting that ice around her heart and the barriers have been coming down. She cares about him.

Finding out that LJQ is the one who buried her family is probably going to take that last barrier down.

This drama has really became the best drama of 2026 for me. If I have to rank it among 2025 dramas, it's also among the top, along the same rank as The Legend of Zang Hai in my heart. Which was also another stellar drama with great writing, acting, and scheming. Compared to classics, I would put its rewatchability and addictiveness on a level similar to Story of Yanxi Palace and Story of Minglan.

The drama has yet to end so I can't say for 100% certainty that it will end up ranking as one of those classics and hit the finish line, but we are on ep 36 and they have so far managed to keep quality consistency.

I have my own critique regarding this novel drama some writing choices and decisions, especially for the female lead (sometimes it feels like the writer is really pushing the cold act and miscommunication / lack of communication thing too hard to the point it doesn't make sense for how clever she's supposed to be) but honestly, the writing is overall WAY better than some of the god awful adaptions I've seen in cdramas lately. Too often the scriptwriters just write some bs and call it an adaption, making the story draggy, boring, convoluted, and headache inducing.

This drama has managed to make me watch each episode fully without skipping much, and I've been watching it in real time, waiting with bated breath for updates.

The acting of the leads and also of side characters has been well done and great use of microexpressions. They feel real. The story is addictive. It's fun to watch. No wonder it's a hit.

Backstory of Lin and Shen family told by the Lin grandfatherhttps://x.com/TawArtsSU35/status/2104391834822955156?s=20
everyone who has been blaming the shen family's deaths on the lins needs to read this narration.

the entire court had clues that the emperor would go after the shen family as early as TWO years prior and the emperor had already been cleaning out the previous emperor's loyal ministers. grandfather shen was the most trusted confidant of said past emperor. he already knew he was in danger. he was the grand secretory, not an idiot. and as we know, even the grandmother knew in advance that her husband would die, and had poison prepared beforehand to die with him, yet they didn't try to warn the lin family either! in fact, grandma shen carried out as normal and held that betrothal meeting which is crazy in my eyes. it's one thing to put your family at risk, but risking other people's necks for your idea of honor is selfish.

the only one who thought of warning someone else even when he was in danger was lin jinqi. honestly, I chalk it up to his kind heart and also his youth. at the time, he probably had no idea that the shens already had warning and would not bend.

in the end, grandfather shen was just too righteous and unbending, to the point of naivety, believing that the emperor would only kill him and leave him family intact. he had the foresight to write some calligraphy before dying, saying that he had not betrayed his honor, but he didn't have the foresight to understand he was dragging his family to death with him.

what's crazy to me is that the emperor also gave him a chance: renounce the previous emperor. grandfather shen refused. the emperor then used him and his family as an example to warn the rest of the court what refusal meant.

on the other hand, grandfather lin wrote not one but two memorials renouncing the previous emperor, married both his granddaughter and his grandson off hastily to favored officials, resigned, and fled to jinling, and only then were they able to save their lives. anyone blaming the lins for breaking the engagement is blinded by their own prejudice and don't realize the gravity of the situation. keeping the engagement would have meant tying themselves to a bomb. this was about survival. just because grandfather shen didn't want to bend, doesn't mean other innocents should die with him.

No. This is not the only one. There are so many GREAT Chinese costume dramas. And everyone just said what you…
Your list of high tier dramas are the same as mine. The Story of Minglan is pretty much the best historical slice of life out there, The Rebel Princess had some flaws but it was epic on a scale that has yet to be replicated, Nirvana in Fire is a classic and chinese equivalent to Game of Thrones at its peak, and Legend of Zang Hai was a fantastic story of revenge. Yanxi Palace also belongs there imo; just a very well crafted drama and story.

A Dream of Splendor was good but it didn't leave much of an impact on me tbh, I've forgotten much of it.

I feel so bad for Jinqi too smh this is my one complaint against the screenwriter, it feels like they're punishing him for smth outside of his control

No. This is not the only one. There are so many GREAT Chinese costume dramas. And everyone just said what you…
- Pursuit of Jade
I dropped it halfway though, relies more on aesthetic than great writing

- Blossoms of Power
FL's acting is lacking tbh

- The Road to Splendor
I really wanted to love this but I had to drop it around ep 20

- A Splendid Match
Great chemistry, and I'm obsessed with the lead couple, but I think the novel was better

The script matters so much, too many dramas start off great but have a weak script or a scrip that drags. Dramas of ATC's calibre are rare because they combine both masterclass in acting (and not just from the leads, but all the side characters too, there are so many vereran actors here) with a masterclass in storytelling.

Very few dramas fall into this tier for me. Joy of Life. Story of Minglan. Story of Yanxi Palace. Classics that have stood the test of time. I don't know yet if this drama will reach this tier for me by the time it ends. I have some criticism about this drama too (scriptwriter seems to have a vendetta against the ML sometimes), but overall it's doing pretty well to set itself apart.

Their friendship and bond is priceless. Just like how Shen family was🥰
tbf we really don't know how the shen family really was in terms of sibling relationships during their every day lives.

we do know, however, that all the women united in solidarity to their deaths in the prison, so that's something.

One thing I really appreciate about dramas in time periods like this, (ie: Against the Current, Blossom, and A…
You are SO right, you could see on her face right away that her opinion on him is starting to change. The way he just went " no time like the present to follow my wife's plan" and strode out so decisively was hot asf honestly HAHA I don't blame XLX for her heart skipping a beat there. She was never going to fall for some flattery or compliments. Honestly, compassion, decisiveness, and courage is the most likely thing to make her fall for someone

Similarly, it wasn't her looks that made Jinqi fall for her, but her courage and cleverness, her daring.

They are both more alike than they think!
