A lot of the older dramas mentioned in the article are available on streaming websites.Journey to the West (1986),…
If you EVER come across Romance of Our Parents with English subtitles let me know. I found something on YouTube, but the subtitles were kinda incompletely. Not all dialog was included. There would be patches where conversations weren't translated. Sigh. I would be so grateful to you if you ever come across this. Thank you ahead of time.
I just skimmed this because I am not at the moment able to give it a proper read, but I nonetheless thank you. I am very interested in older dramas from countries like China, Korea and Japan. The problem is that it is very difficult to find a way to watch some of them. Even the early 2000s and 90s is very difficult. I can't imagine it would cost a streaming service much to get the rights to show them and with articles like this maybe interest would grow. Perhaps cherry pick very well reviewed past dramas or dramas that had some kind of important impact as a start. You asked about a favorite per decade, well I'll just mention this drama as it had a TREMENDOUS impact on me. It is likely my second all time favorite drama behind only Reply 1988 and that is Romance of Our Parents directed by the great Kong Sheng. It is such a beautiful and poignant journey of a couple meeting and marrying all the way through until their old age. It takes you through a journey of recent Chinese history from about the 1950s until today. Raising a family in times of great change and the influence of Mao to their children all growing up. It is such a profoundly wonderful journey...a journey I was quite depressed when it ended. I desperately want to get a copy of it, but have been unsuccessful. It was on Netflix here in America 4 years ago or so. I watched it through twice and now I can't find it. It is truly heartbreaking.
Chen Zui is one of the rarest, purest and angelic character in drama land. His demeanour, nature, movements, kindness,…
Where did you watch it? I didn't find it on Viki or Asian Crush. I finally found it on iQIYI, but it is SOOOOO hard to read the subs!! They are in a very very faint...light white font making it so very very hard to read. I really want to watch too. Thanks for any help.
I was watching this drama while it aired and it got so draggy and boring that I had to drop at episode 12, can…
I largely agree with you. However I am a chronic completist. I have to finish things...usually. I did drop Hospital Playlist. Everyone seems to adore. I tried. I watched like 10 episodes or more, but it never did anything and all they did was meet and eat. Every episode they ate usually more than once. Zzzz. This series did get seriously draggy and just went in circles with only the slightest advancement in the story, but I have soldiered on. I am at episode 15. I will finish it. Btw, I NEVER fast forward or skip things. Again my drama OCD. Lol.
I was truly upset that they killed Yook Gwang. He was easily my favorite character. I kept going he wasn't really dead. Sigh. It was very solid. It started off excellent, but settled in to being solid. It, like so many dramas, was stretched out and things began to lose some of it's power. I could also expound on how evil seemed to be stronger than God himself often in this series, but that's ok. It's just fiction and a drama. Lol. Pretty good stuff.
This is definitely an arthouse type film from its slow pace, to it's sometimes sparse dialog and it's intimate and esoteric story. As many have said, it appeals to a very niche audience. I do like these type films because I get immersed in the whole intimate world. I did enjoy it, though I will admit I did not think it was quite as amazing as I expected.
Watched this when it came out and loved it, really wanted a season 2.TT
I just started watching this series. It is usual for me to look up the cast if I like something...sadly there is a reason there is no season two. The lady who played Sherlock is dead from an apparent suicide back in 2020. Sad...very very sad.
I just started watching Miss Sherlock and was looking up the cast....only to find she was dead...and that it was an apparent suicide. Very sad...very sad indeed.
