Who said she has to use her powers in front on everyone in the academy? She can still use them when she's doing something secretive. Like how she stole li xuan's token but unfortunately back then, she didn't even bother defending herself much from his bodyguard so it made her real identity really obvious, meanwhile Prince Mu who fought with him a lot more than her wasn't easy to figure out. If figuring out someone's identity with just their measly fighting skills was this easy then he would have been caught a long ago since he's from another state and probably has different way of fighting than others. Also, let's not forget that she literally transformed into her actual form while saving Crown Prince from the assassins sent by Second Prince so I honestly doubt that she's incapable of using her powers without revealing that she's from kanwu clan, the writers are just lazy and prefer to go with the typical damsel in distress fl who only uses her brain once in a blue moon and always get saved by others, because how else will they prove their ml and second ml's love unless the fl with even less personality than a side character can't even defend herself from a bug? This drama had the potential to be great but they completely ruined it with the lead's noble idiocy and the "uwu I'm so shy and kind sorry I can't even bear to kill a bug~" personality they gave to the fl.
I honestly wish Youlian was more manipulative, ambitious and determined to free the dragon emperor (or whatever, I forgot his name) for her people even if that means hurting Li Xuan's feelings, basically kind of similar to Lu Zhao yao from 'The Legends'. She's just way too kind and weak... Everything about this movie was nothing but perfection, the only flaw I can think of is that the lesbian couple didn't get enough screentime and since it's an old movie, the characters were slightly stereotypish in some aspects (however not in a mocking manner at all), yet most people are rating it so low...
