What are your expectations in politics, love, and family dynamics management, for a sixteen-year-old who doesn't…
I don't quite understand what you're saying. Destined ML Xiao Wuyi was never a spoilt child to begin with, in episode 1. He was already a ruthless strategic leader of generals.
When has the ML ever been a spoiled child? Could you tell me which episode and what context?
16 episodes and FL had no character development. I mean, her character is so inconsistent, 1 minute she is smart…
What are your expectations in politics, love, and family dynamics management, for a sixteen-year-old who doesn't like classical literature or maidenly arts, prefers to focus on Mohist Mechanisms and business related to that in a resourceful manner, and has been overly-sheltered and somewhat spoilt by the doting parents... Until she met Xiao Wuyi?
She was 17 while this was filmed. Her agency could have easy chosen non romance dramas ugh
Ai Mi has a solid non-romance non-idol projects filmography, considered outstanding for her age. Prior to "Key To The Phoenix Heart" being her third project with a female lead role, she had her first female lead role in the war movie "Breakthrough", and filmed her second female lead role as a teenage student of certain traits in the suspense crime drama "Above The Wall" helmed by the critically-acclaimed Cao Dun.
She also answered a global casting call and successfully auditioned for a supporting role in sports-comedy movie "Kung Fu Soccer" directed by the amazing Stephen Chow, which wrapped filming before KTTPH. KFS aired on 11 July this month. IQiyi abruptly pushed KTTPH forward to match that airing date, after "Kung Fu Soccer" officially announced their airing date.
"Kung Fu Soccer" is currently a gigantic domestic hit, grossing 900 million RMB before 4 pm on 16 July. It is estimated to gross more than 3 billion RMB at the domestic box office. Global roll-out begins in August. Ai Mi has already done two teenage student roles in two non-idol dramas with Directors Mao Kunyu and Cao Dun, so she doesn't need any more teenage student roles. She has been praised for holding her own in a cast of strong veteran actors, as the younger teenage version of the FL she portrayed being a significant supporting role, in a non-romance suspense criminal drama helmed by Mao Kunyu and led by Luo Jin (National Second Class Actor hotly sought after by directors).
Cao Dun, Mao Kunyu, and Stephen Chow are the directors she worked with, before auditioning for KTTPH, because the female lead Huang Yang Tian Tian ran into issues. There is less than one year between Huang Yang Tian Tian and Ai Mi, where HYTT is several months older.
As to "Key To The Phoenix Heart" and your assumptions about romance in Chinese dramas, this is my answer:
casting an 18 year old to be in a romance drama with a 28 yo is insane to me like-
Thank you for commenting. Please note that this drama has the following:
# Politics. A lot of it. It is the primary focus, as essential as character development of multiple people. This is a historical political drama, first and foremost. # Battles and Combat # Romance is secondary. Comedy between our leads has been very refreshing.
[ "Key To The Phoenix Heart" captures the essence of a uniquely Chinese romance of purity, portraying it with exquisite nuance. The affection between Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu is never expressed through bold, impassioned declarations; instead, it is woven into the fabric of their daily lives—growing slowly and spreading quietly amidst their constant, bickering banter. While they often trade barbs on the surface, each has long since—and without fanfare—reserved the tenderest spot in their heart for the other. Their love is one of restraint and subtlety; what began as a faint flutter of the heart upon their first meeting gradually deepened over time into an all-encompassing, profound devotion. The dynamic between Xiao and Xie is truly captivating; it has been a long time since a TV drama has portrayed a romance so clean and pure." ] - https://m.weibo.cn/status/5320736732349526

Hou Minghao's first scenes in episode 1 are not about Ai Mi. He needs to portray ruthlessness in layers. As a general. With responsibilities and cunning. The scenes in the first four episodes are meant to give you certain impressions. Hou Minghao and Ai Mi as Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu are hostile towards each other, in episode 1.
As Hou Minghao said in an interview about this drama (and I am only quoting a bit):
[ “I think it contains a lot of different things. First of all, there’s the political struggle at court, and the conflicts between the great aristocratic clans and the common-born officials. Besides that, I think there’s also a lot about family relationships. Because everyone grows up in a different environment and comes from a different family background...
.... So every person, because of their different backgrounds and origins, gradually searches for the meaning and value of their own existence. Their aspirations and careers is one aspect. Another aspect is family.”
... “Then, on the emotional side. I’ll just talk about the two of us (referring to Xie Jiayu the FL). I think our relationship is a very ‘pure love.’ It’s unlike anything I’ve ever portrayed in any of my previous roles.... ]
The NRTA, China's censorship board infamous for editing dramas with a style that usually leaves viewers complaining (draconian is a common label), approved "Key To The Phoenix Heart" within less than three months from time of submission (after filming wrapped plus post-production process), which is a record for a longform historical costume C-drama being approved.

This is not a Hollywood movie or a Bollywood movie. This is an oldschool C- Drama whereby the first four episodes also have an oldschool TVB-style feel, produced by a veteran production team. KTTPH reached more than 1.5 million reservations before airing, and is currently delighting viewers (so it has gone from A-level to S+).
If you cannot take all the above AND you're hunting for a certain type of romance (lip locking and PDA is not present in this drama, since it is filmed akin to an oldschool C-drama for romance) -> "Key To The Phoenix Heart" may not be the drama for you.
She is back? The weird 'noona lover' who is against 'older ML and younger FL' but loving 'older FL and younger…

Here's a bit of an overview of what Hou Minghao and Ai Mi did, in preparations for their roles:
3 months before filming the drama, Hou Minghao underwent martial arts training which included equestrian training plus fencing skills while wearing 30 kilograms of armour during all that. He didn't use stand-ins, naturally suffering many bruises to his knees for various stunts and wirework.
His martial arts work during the "sea of fire" was impressive. He was hoarse from all the breathing technique preparations. A historical consultant also ensured he learned the etiquette of ancient generals, and this includes him having to practice kneeling down one hundred times and hence resulting in bruises on his forehead.
Every fight that you see is him doing the action choreography planned by Sun Mengfei. On top of that, he had to understand his role as Xiao Wuyi in multiple perspectives, relative to all other characters whom Xiao Wuyi has important relationships with. His immersion from all angles is impressive.
~*~*~*~
Ai Mi was also not having it easy with historical etiquette and having to look like an expert with the Mohist Mechanisms knowledge that she demonstrates in this drama.
Cultural heritage craftsmen taught her about the Southern Song Dynasty's "sparrow-with-ring-in-beak" woodcraft mechanism lock that she had to be able to handle speedily, amongst other mechanisms such as the Luban Lock(also known as Kongming Lock) that she had to understand:
She had to practise 4 hours a day. Her nails split because of this. She insisted on using actual locks for authenticity during shooting (such as the seven-layered Kongming Lock) despite her fingers already rough with calluses, hence the props team destroyed six antique locks to enable this to happen.
After dividing her character understanding into three different stages, she also wrote a 10,000 word biography and had to attend a psychology course near the Beijing Film Academy.

Episode 16 So, the Cui guy is not actually the real Cui guy, but an impostor? That makes sense supposed to be…
# Northern Qin has successfully infiltrated at least one of the noble families of Southern Ye. Hence that spy devoted to Empress Shao Yang could kill Shao'an's sister without a second thought.
# Gao Yijun is not sentimental, when it comes to characters in a screenplay needing to die to be realistic. Falling off a cliff means death. Saving people from a deadly outcome when working with a complex mechanism in impossible circumstances means death. But at the same time, he won't kill characters for the sake of melodrama, if he can do so with the screenwriter(s).
# Um, about the Eagle King chap who isn't a nice man, and will do almost anything to win... Being with him doesn't lead to great outcomes. Then again, that might be what Li Lejun deserves. I'm a bit torn. On one hand, she loves her brother and will do anything to protect him. On the other hand, I'm on the fence about what will happen to her (which I won't tell you, because that is a spoiler).
# I saw this clip on weibo where Xie Huaigui is very devoted to love, in the sense that he really loved that Concubine An and never had children with any other women. As to whether he is doing everything for love, and whether he has any connections to the Lu clan -> Still a mental work in progress.
# HMH, Ai Mi, Peter Ho etc are all dubbed by VAs.
# It's interesting that Li Mao is supposed to get villainous but nevertheless, he still has moments of goodness in him.
Okay guys... How good is this👀 I'm trying to wait for more episodes but like, I'm shivering in suspense
I suggest you start watching. We're about to reach the part of the drama where things escalate to another level.
Given the politics involved which also affects the choices of the leads and their interactions, and character developments, you'll need at least two days to absorb everything properly. The comedy is absolutely hilarious and when you least expect it, in a good way.
Various viewers have made posts in the forum and comment section, about multiple details such as the timeline of the drama, OST song links, production details, etc
As of 3.44 pm on Thursday 16 July, sports-comedy movie "Kung Fu Soccer" directed by the very-famous Stephen Chow has grossed 900 million RMB, and will definitely gross 1 billion RMB on Friday 17 July. Ai Mi successfully auditioned for a supporting role in this movie, which wrapped filming in June 2025 more than a year ago.
