So many people have waited for the sequel to 'Shaolin Soccer" because of Stephen Chow, and this ensemble cast led by Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba, and Lay Zhang is tearing up the charts! Glad that this movie enables great exposure domestically and globally, for the entire cast!
May everyone in the movie benefit from acting opportunities, moving forward!
At 5.54 pm on 14 July today, "Kung Fu Soccer" grossed 700 million RMB, and the total box office takings forecast has been revise to exceed 3 billion RMB.
As per CCTV-6's official weibo account making this post, Ai Mi is on a poster for this milestone:
"...feel awful when viewers who love this drama talk about the ML and FL." So, this is how it feels when…
It is because the casting is quite good overall, which is why when we know something about Xie Huaigui and Xie Jiayu after 5 episodes... We all have the same reaction. And it reinforces Princess Yunzhao standing with Jiayu, while further highlighting the changes between Xie Huaigui and Jiayu.
When Princess Yunzhao says to her daughter “任何时刻,你可以依靠的不是父母、夫君,而是你自己。” - ("At any given moment, the person you can truly rely on is not your parents or your husband, but yourself." )
The mother shields the daughter's acts of defiance while subverting the mother-daughter trope, instead of a traditional lecture or condescending preaching, and establishes a powerful emotional bond of timeless devotion. Princess Yunzhao's stance already planted the seed in Jiayu to recognise someone who will love her as much as her mother, willing to protect her, grant her freedom of choice, and also strengthen her to be independent. And that is Xiao Wuyi.
I really enjoy the scenes that Jin Sha is in. Her rapport with Peter Ho is also very good.
Winter Sonata! Autumn In My Heart! Classics!
(I don't like PDA in my C-dramas. I won't begrudge people who want them. But I tend to skip those. Coroner's Diary has too much kissing as one example, so I FFWD)
"...feel awful when viewers who love this drama talk about the ML and FL." So, this is how it feels when…
I don't feel awful. I am damn irritated at a parade of patronising ignorant morons over the past 4 days who can't speak mandarin, know jack-nothing about how Chinese casting for historical costume C-dramas work best, and ignore why people like myself are enjoying the casting of Ai Mi, such as her being able to match 42-year-old actress Jin Sha as the mother of Xie Jiayu.
We are not casting for a Western TV series, a Bollywood movie, or some sexualised modern Hollywood romance that these nutjobs have in mind. For once, someone has actually done great casting as I would expect for mother and daughter in a historical C-drama. What is trending online is a lot of praise for the casting of this drama. Casting of FL in this drama is very important, to match the rest of the older supporting cast.
"cut from the same mold." -> With oval-shaped faces, similar upward arch of mouths, and similar smiling eyes resembling crescent moons: This uncanny resemblance in the underlying bone structure of Jin Sha and Ai Mi make their scenes easier. Having at least a 24-year-age gap is perfect for a historical drama as mother and daughter. Aesthetic continuity adds a sense of destiny. Nobody I know offline who is also Chinese like myself and has watched C-Ent for more than 25 years actually likes to see a much-older actress trying to pretend to be a young teenager because frankly, it doesn't sit well with those of us who can obviously see it doesn't work. We just skip it.
“跨时空共用一张脸”。-> They appear to share the same face across the continuity of time, if one sees Jin Sha's younger photos
#让金莎艾米演母女的简直天才# (The casting of Jin Sha and Ai Mi as Mother and Daughter Is Pure Genius) is trending on social media.
"a textbook example of casting,", "a stroke of brilliance,", "the director has an incredibly discerning eye." and "Director, you really know exactly what we want to see!" are some of the praise from verified online accounts and media outlets.
When a mother and a daughter part ways, with zero dialogue and only eye contact during twenty seconds, the mother's restrained concern matching the daughter's reluctance to leave moved countless viewers to tears. An established actress paired with a very good younger actress leads to the best scenes. Looks and acting prowess is well-matched here. Character fit matters more than gimmicky casting.
The casting for *Key to The Phoenix Heart* propelled the actors playing the mother-daughter duo—Jin Sha and Ai Mi—into the spotlight, and also generated significant buzz around the "young couple" dynamic between Hou Minghao and Ai Mi. People are talking about the acting, the plot, and the comedy.
"Key To The Phoenix Heart" resembles Classic K-dramas, with the restraint and careful revelations of emotional unfolding. If people cannot get their minds out of the gutter, don't watch this drama.
The episode just started and we’re already seeing a love rivalry out in the open. 😂 Xiao Wu Yi saying how…
At least they didn't exaggerate or overdramatise the rivalry. It was a straightforward exchange of statements. Thankfully not buried by a mountain of flowery words or wordy expositions.
Riley's changes of micro-expressions here were interesting to note. He has done well.
And Xiao Wuyi is indeed winning the race for Xie Jiayu's heart blindfolded, considering he isn't even trying.
The Empress Dowager makes me want to poison her to death, as usual. There's something quite compelling yet irksome at the same time. Great actress in this role! Li Mao will be happy to off her before episode 20.
I checked out Blossoms of Power because the synopsis sounded interesting enough, but I couldn't make it past episode…
Ok, I mentally reversed out at 200 mph. I hate slo-mo in wuxia or anything else-drama-related, unless used minimally. Nobody does car chases in slo-mo, and I don't get the point of falling into the water as such . Going to dive into 11 and 12 of KTTPH!
Kuyun, updated 14.07.2026Neo Hou's Xiao Wuyi topped Most Popular Characters per today's ranking 🥳🔥😍KTTPH…
Congratulations!
There are also a lot of positive things being said about KTTPH in China, such as the casting of Ai Mi to match Jin Sha, the actress who plays Ai Mi's mother. I shared a bit of it here:
So this isn’t bullying? Making relatively new users feel like they have no place here if they call out older…

Rewatch KTTPH first!
Casting is important.
In China, people are lauding the casting. On weibo, #让金莎艾米演母女的简直天才# is trending.
When we look at casting, we're not looking from a romance angle. We look from many perspectives. Jin Sha being cast as Ai Mi's mother and Ai Mi being cast as her daughter has generated a lot of praise and sent their pairing into the spotlight. In other countries, is this thing about looking like biological blood for casting taken into consideration as much as some countries, such as China?
“A textbook example of casting,” “a stroke of genius,” “the director has such a unique eye.”
Chemistry is not about romance. It is about compatibility, ability and at times, facial aesthetics. The fact that Ai Mi and 42-year-old Jin Sha look similar in certain aspects to consider also make their bond and interactions feel so natural in KTTPH. And their age gap of more than 24 years is lauded as being necessary to this.
The moment you have qinggong in a drama, the laws of physics are defied XD What I like is the transformation of…
The only other historical costume idol-romance drama I have been able to eagerly finish this year is "You Have My Heart". The buildup, the clever dialogue, the show not tell... I got so excited about that! You should check that out. 24 episodes, 25 minutes each. "I wrote a mostly-spoiler-free review, to explain the culture and songs and meanings of certain details. It is very beautifully shot and written. The male lead is a human minor court official who becomes a county magistrate. The female lead is a cool aloof demon lord. Shades of Pu Song Ling's classic mixed with Justice Bao.
"Key to The Phoenix Heart" reminds me of what I like so much about C-Ent, more than 20 years ago. I watched at least two of the Director's dramas of more than 10 years ago, and I am so happy to see this drama. He does emotional connections well.
I'm not a fan of MLs in romance being cold, ruthless and borderline toxic. If they are saving the world and no romance, sure.
I also cannot stand MLs being abused or going OOC stupid or debasing themselves for the FL. There's so many recent C-dramas I just dropped, because it is a huge turn off.
I have to appreciate the competition and the hug scene in episode 10. The fight on horses was beautifully filmed…
The moment you have qinggong in a drama, the laws of physics are defied XD What I like is the transformation of the body language and how the little gestures mean so much.
Xiao Wuyi said men and women should not have contact, then he forgot all about it when he carried Xie Jiayu out of the rain, helped her with her injured ankle, and put on her shoe for her.
Xie Jiayu clearly was comfortable hugging Xiao Wuyi and vice versa. Her face was radiant around him in a way that hasn't happened before. Xiao Wuyi's eyes lit up, and he hugged her very tightly. When they pulled apart- Their bright smiling expressions were not expressions they had ever had around each other. Kudos to Ai Mi and Hou Minghao for masterfully conveying this scene!
Contrast with when Xiao Wuyi had pretended to be blind and she finally realised he regained his sight, she snatched away her hand in Episode 9. In episode 10, she realises Xiao Wuyi's hand is injured and holds it. He is the one who pulls away his hand.
We can see how they gradually become comfortable around each other. Romance is emotional connection. Golden Age of Hollywood had this, but no more.
This is all very tastefully done. Someone below commented about how this resembled classic K-Dramas of yesteryears.

Here's my take on whether this three-marriages scenario could work (technically, there's no need to take a long time to show a marriage, nor does it need to be obsessively bad for 2ML).
1) From what I mentioned of Li Mao capturing Xiao Wuyi and torturing him: The divorce letter is signed. But before that, Xie Jiayu drives a bargain with Li Mao. Should Xiao Wuyi divorce her, and if Li Mao is to marry her with her agreement, she will not be physically coerced by him in sexual matters and he has to win her heart again (which may never happen, since it is up to her). Xiao Wuyi is allowed to continue his duties without any meddling from Li Mao, in return for her to continue with her Mohism crafts to benefit Southern Ye including the Beifu army. It's a bargain. That way any obsessiveness and deviation is limited.
One can show a wedding procession, and then quickly pan to the first night when the couple should share a bedroom. Li Mao is alone in his bedroom- Sad. Angry.
2) Xiao Wuyi continues as per his duties. And that is also why the battle between Southern Ye and Northern Qin happens, because that Eagle King just cannot help himself. The biggest challenge.
3) As long as Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu have a proper reunion by episode 28, there isn't a need for a third marriage to be shown, because we can infer it :D
