Here's my take on whether this three-marriages scenario could work (technically, there's no need to take a long time to show a marriage, nor does it need to be obsessively bad for 2ML).
1) From what I mentioned of Li Mao capturing Xiao Wuyi and torturing him: The divorce letter is signed. But before that, Xie Jiayu drives a bargain with Li Mao. Should Xiao Wuyi divorce her, and if Li Mao is to marry her with her agreement, she will not be physically coerced by him in sexual matters and he has to win her heart again (which may never happen, since it is up to her). Xiao Wuyi is allowed to continue his duties without any meddling from Li Mao, in return for her to continue with her Mohism crafts to benefit Southern Ye including the Beifu army. It's a bargain. That way any obsessiveness and deviation is limited.
One can show a wedding procession, and then quickly pan to the first night when the couple should share a bedroom. Li Mao is alone in his bedroom- Sad. Angry.
2) Xiao Wuyi continues as per his duties. And that is also why the battle between Southern Ye and Northern Qin happens, because that Eagle King just cannot help himself. The biggest challenge.
3) As long as Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu have a proper reunion by episode 28, there isn't a need for a third marriage to be shown, because we can infer it :D

Sorry about taking this time to get back to you. Flooded with notifications, then had to dig. TBH, I prefer a more-natural look. Too much makeup and filters is not my style, given what I grew up with for C-Ent, but I can understand the need for all this in xianxia dramas. That's also why I usually skip xianxias, unless they involve strong literary themes of wuxia. I prefer classic wuxia, not modern wuxia that has men hugging each other.
This less makeup-situation actually helps older viewers be endeared to HMH.
For me, Xiao Wuyi is HMH's best role yet. I believed it would be his best role, based on what I knew of the production team. YMMV. Objectively as someone who is not a fan of HMH, his roles in scripts are somewhat tortuous for the recent three dramas that aired and are of course primarily geared for female viewers, these options primarily due to the details of his contract with Hesong pertaining to script-selection and more.
Lu Jianglai had to endure an emotionally abusive relationship with Rong Shanbao. Ji Bozai had to be understanding and accepting of a lot of lies and be wholly devoted (I read the novel before the drama ever aired, and I absolutely did not like the dumbing-down of the lead characters for the screenplay). Hong Ye was punished unfairly in an eternal prison for choices he didn't choose to control but reacted to, and nothing he does can ever change his fate (not helped by the Azure dragon choosing him).
I understand HMH said he wanted to do modern realist dramas in a May interview, such as criminal police work or forensic science. I have not watched "I Am Nobody" and I am unsure despite another friend's recommendation because given the track record of these recent dramas, I don't want to watch another emotionally-abused ML or ML debasing himself for the FL- That's one of my biggest turn-offs. I detest dramas that have FL or ML debasing themselves and/or going dumb for love. Urgh. That's why I usually prefer no-romance dramas for recent dramas. Or donghua such as "Beyond Time's Gaze".
And I sympathise with HMH. An anti-fan being his manager, an agency that can't be bothered to promote him properly or give him interesting scripts to help him fully expand his acting range and experience (and hence garner a larger audience diversity and numbers), plus a crazy schedule thanks to an agency that couldn't care for any preferences of their artist outside of their own commercial goals- For FoF, GJM didn't know what ZYZ should be like and HMH's interpretation was very enjoyable, and I was relieved that ZYZ was at least having an emotionally-healthy relationship with Wen Xiao. That said, the overall script...
Anyways, I'll stop rambling. C-Ent is what it is, and hopefully HMH will be able to leave Hesong when his contract is up. Being independent for some time after leaving Huanyu, Song Weilong signed a great contract with Alibaba-backed TH Entertainment and announced it in end-March. The details of those contract are exactly the kind that HMH needs. Otherwise at this rate, his health might deteriorate too much.
It's very good! Give the first four episodes a go. There's many reasons why many of us are laughing at the comedy, going gaga over the ML general, finding the FL as a teenage mechanical whiz interesting, and enjoying various aspects of the drama from tension to fights to chaos😃

None of us want a forced trope-y 2ML. One thing apparent about Li Mao is at this point, his spine appears to resemble a windvane, and his inclinations follow that windvane. Xie Huaigui is waiting to pounce and break up the brotherhood, because he doesn't like XIao Wuyi's influence on Li Mao.
I hope the three-marriages thing is bullshit but if it happens, the production team doesn't make it ridiculous. This drama has traits that work well because of giving fresh unexpected takes on what we expected, such as the harem of Xiao Wuyi.
I can see makeup issues mostly for the woman, but I can ignore them for everything else.
One thing that could change this only near the end (if it happens) is Li Lejun dying, and Li Mao waking up. I like Li Lejun, but I believe the Eagle King will want her as a wife just to torture Li Mao and have some leverage with Li Mao.
