Title Echoes of the Self Spoiler
The ending was lazing imo. They wanted to kill leads but then suddenly it was modern life and they reconnect?…
Alright on second thought i guess it was to signify how deep their love runs across lifetimes i guess so there is that romantic aspect but it was so abrupt and did not flow well i guess which is why it left me going "wait what" 🥀

Right? I literally was so confused by that, so the FL remembers her past lives or something and hence was writting that into a novel? Then coincidentally bumps into the ML again and reconnects? What? What was the purpose of this twist?

Im not someone who rewatches dramas nor is a huge fan of romance-centred dramas. But this. This masterpiece. I…
Also wanted to add - I was prepared for full on depressive episodes and arcs based on my previous experience with xianxias. But this? Fluffy and wholesome and tingly throughout, with bits of heartfelt and bitter scenes here and there. A pleasant surprise, really

Im not someone who rewatches dramas nor is a huge fan of romance-centred dramas. But this. This masterpiece. I am going to rewatch this eventually I just know it. I havent felt this strongly for a cdrama since Blossom and Fangs of Fortune, which literally aired in the fourth quarter of last year. It took me at least 8 months to finally feel deeply attached to a cdrama. It is literally 2am and I have work tomorrow but I just cant get off my WDBTD high. 😫

Wow I just finished it. It’s 1:35 AM in the morning and I don’t know what to do with myself. It was so amazing.
It is literally 1.38am in the morning here as I type this. I, too, dont know what to do next. Guess ill go watch some behind the scenes. I havent been this attached to any cdrama couple and cant even remember which was my last favourite couple. I think the leads in Blossom, but that drama aired last year lmao.

I’ve been asking myself the same thing, what makes this drama so addictive when the plot is nothing we haven’t…
So true! I am at ep 24 so far and there hasn't been those typical misunderstandings and noblesse oblige type stuff, basically no needless drama just for the sake of it. FL is indeed very relatable and her character makes sense given that she is from the modern world.

And for sure it feels so nice watching ML's walls melt only for the FL, like this man has been tortured his whole life and yet he manages to pull out from himself such amazing acts of kindness and treats the FL with such gentleness?? Like, us women literally gotta train our boyfriends to become actual decent boyfriends lmao

I adore this drama so much because the main leads are so consistently written and believable, and the overall plot is character-driven rather than plot-driven. This is ironic because I don't do well with romcoms and dramas with a very heavy focus on romance between the leads.

Anyone else also feel the same??? Or anyone else has another explanation to why this drama is so addictive???

Because let's face it, the villains aren't particularly interesting, the plot is fairly simple too and typical of a xianxia setting. So my conclusion is really the very strong characterisation of the main leads.

u forgot a 4th camp. the novel readers. id say most of the novel readers were kinda disappointed with how it turned…
Oh yes that is true, I was just thinking novel readers would fall under camp 2 or 3 because it is a very low possibility for adaptations to earn the same love as the original material has,,,,

Group 3 too.
Yes I think that is why Imperial Coroner sat so well with me, I feel I don't get the "need" to watch the next episode if every 1-2 episodes talks about a case that doesn't add much to any overarching plot.

Me too, I think WDBTD is doing a good job at doing what xianxias are expected to do. I went in with expectations of how a xianxia would be like, and it served.

Group 3 too.
I enjoyed Imperial Coroner!! It was such a pleasant surprise because I didnt think I would appreciate the leads or the story as much as I did, as usually these case-by-case dramas dont grip me and I feel cdramaland doesnt do a great job at those in general. I am also watching when destiny brings the demon now! Hi five hahaha. This one is going down the expected xianxia-sad-backstory-ML but with a comedic flair brought by the modern time FL.

Thank you for recommending the flow!! Cant wait to start them. I just started the xianxia one with chen feiyu, will get to these next!

I might have to check out the first two then, because the chemistry was sizzlin in Blossom and the last 2 you mentioned. Thank you!

Thank you.

I too felt my interest waning even though I tried my hardest to remain invested. I love the leads so much, but I guess I only have myself to blame because I was expecting romance to be a subplot and the politics and war aspects to be the main plot, but in here I feel the latter is the subplot, at least for the 20 episodes I watched. Plus I thought it would be heavily centred on the FL's journey and time as a general. So the mismatch in expectations was the first step I took in the wrong direction. Which is ironic because if I liked the leads so much and started this more so to watch the leads then wouldnt this drama have given me exactly what I wanted? I guess that is where realism comes into play.

I agree with what you mean about the need for a skilled director to bring text material to life. I often felt that this drama was more of "telling" than "showing". The first few episodes are typically supposed to be the most important ones for world building and character introductions - to get us rooting for the leads, if not invested in their stories and backgrounds at least. But the first few episodes was just telling us how strong this female general was, telling us how tough a childhood she had and etc. Granted there are limitations given the limit of 40 episodes.

But I feel I would have felt her pain and suffering on a more visceral level if they had somewhat shown that part more. I would have an easier connection as to why she was so bubbly and clingy with the ML, although I already tried to connect the distant dots that it was because 1. She wanted to quickly gain favour to rise the ranks 2. This part of her is part of her true self she never got to embody because she always had to keep a mask between herself and the world. And well this is from what I gather as I did not read the novel and there may have been other underlying reasons why she acts the way she is during the arc when she was a mere new recruit in the ML's army.

Also you mentioning Blossom and Joy of Life is giving me such fond memories, I really enjoyed these two dramas, and very insightful knowledge gained from you as I have not read the novel. Scriptwriters and directors being able to pinpoint the strengths and cons of the original source can truly alleviate the adaptation. Thank you for this sharing.

To me the thing about camp 3 is that if I lose interest in a drama, I drop it and it is in the past. Yet the loads…
Unfortunately negativity is always most often voiced louder than positivity in this world. I think critique done in a neutral tone and not one laced with hatred, condescension and anger is ok, people can voice their opinions but once it turns into nonstop hate? Nahhhh just move on, find something else and be happier :')

i am always group 1: i watch a drama for entertainment and if visuals and actors are ok, i will watch it, not…
Yes so true though, even slice of life dramas can be unrealistic, whats to say non slice of life dramas would be?? I think every viewer at one point gives 10/10 to a drama with obvious flaws just because they connect with the chemistry or very specific areas of a drama and not the overarching element of a drama (me included). But so happy for you to be camp 1 fam!! Hope watching LOTFG gave you lots of entertaintment and joy hehehe

I feel like there are three camps of viewers for this drama hahahaha

1 - The ones in it for the visuals, the romance, the leads, capable of looking past unrealistic plot points (or even being oblivious to them) and are here just for a nice chill casual ride to unwind after a long day

2 - The ones who see the flaws in the drama and can actively ridicule and critic them, but are able to make excuses for these flaws to keep pushing through the drama or they overall still enjoy it, again for the visuals, leads, romance

3 - The ones who see the flaws and unrealism, which then prevents them from being emotionally and logically immersed in the drama, and therefore drop it, as much as they may hate to do so because the wait for this drama was pretty long and hyped and the lead actors are well-liked

And all three camps are equally valid, just to each their own.

Personally I was camp number 2 until 20 episodes or so and switched to camp 3. A pity honestly because I really wanted to enjoy this drama :( Good for everyone else who is able to though :(
