It is not directly related to the lost tom though. While the story is based on Wang Zanghai the villain from the lost tomb. Only the copyright of the character has been bought and an original script was written so there should be little connection between this series and lost tomb.
Currently watching episode 1 and it feels very realistic. So liang xiang comes from a bannermen family. What about the family who invited the salt merchant's wife?

It is not really necessary to watch the other series though. While this drama is based on the character Wang Zanghai who is considered a villain in The Lost Tomb Series. This drama actually only bought the copyright to the character and created an original script. Therefore there will be no relation between this drama and the other series.
What is the connection with the Daomu Biji series?
The villain of that series is called Wang Zanghai. The copyright of Wang Zanghai's story was obtained by this drama production team and a new script was written with a new story hence why the main character name is Zanghai . There is no direct relationship between the tomb raider series and this drama.
So is this kind of like a unit drama with each story having different leads or is it similar to demom hunter roamnce with zhang miaoyi and haung hasen characters being involved in all the stories.
I just want to point out that this kind of story is better as a long drama because of the complexity of the story…
It does not cover the entire book though, just the latter part of the book and a part known as the battle of xiangyang but that part was cut out due to censorship. Since there might be viewers who are unfamilar to the story, the director adds in 20 minutes of background. I only read half the book so the intro was absolutely necessary for a viewer like me.

Someone who read the novel tell me whether the pei dafu adopted son plot was also in the novel or it is something made up for the drama? Also the plot of this drama is a total melodrama. I started thinking it is going to be a serious gothic romance drama but ended up getting this melodramatic plot. Am still going to keep watching though.
So I completed watching upto episode 12 and the veteran actors are so good especially the actresses playing Madam Zhuang and Concubine Zhou. I especially loved the little flash back of Young Mafam Zhuang and Yuan Chengan. Chen Duling has really improved but the male lead feels a bit stiff.

So I read 16 chapters of the novel before watching the first episode and it seems like they were just inspired by the story rather than adapting it like they did for The Double. First episode was great although I might stop reading the novel as I am getting confused with the differences shown especially the female leads mother.
Good news is that it gives fans more time to promote the drama. Bad news is waiting for 15 more days😂
