Can I be nitpicky for once about Dalmi? It's a minor thing but it keeps bothering me that nobody seems to mention it: I didn't like how in ep 1 she took the mic from the guy who was speaking/asking the question. Felt kinda rude.
I put the same reasons to say that Dosan was a toxic character and they told me that Han was also toxic they only…
I have no words, just laughs lmao This is it..? Easily debunkable. And 2 of them I commented to Janice above lol and the third is not even toxic I have only ONE thing in mind for which HJP is attackable and I would agree with their critique of that scene/those words, but they didn't mention it lmao
while i agree dosan is not the best male lead, let's not forget he's actually really really socially awkward.…
I said that he blames yongsan because when he realized hjp could have prevented the signing of the contract, and chulsan was on a roll telling yongsan that hjp was right, nds asks yongsan "why did you do that?". While I agree that it's not a direct blaming of yongsan, it stll comes off as indirect blaming or shifting the blame. And once you realize and notice that after the whole thing NDS never tells outright to anyone that it was his fault (and dalmi's for that matter, but in a context of a drama and human nature of blaming oneself for bad things that happened instead of your loved ones, he would never blame her, and I understand that) for not looking thoroughly the contract they signed (they didn't even know what they should pay if a breach of contract occured... but i'm letting this slide), then you'll see how bad that comes off. Like he wasn't the one that signed the paper (with dalmi). A moment of growth, that would satisfy me would be a simple "it was my fault, i'm sorry" (look at chulsan! He said he's sorry to saha and dalmi! I really liked it when he said that). Even if it's not all his fault, he could have said that. It's not ooc and he's sappy enough to say it. And dalmi could have simply replied that it wasn't all his fault. That's it. As simple as that and dosan would have been a little bit better than he was before. aka a moment of growth.
As for the punch. I told you to ignore that I have a hjp profile pic. I'm glad we agree that reacting with violence is always out of line. So I don't understand why are you trying to tell me it's because jipyeong was harsh with his words (it sounds like you're justifying violence, I know it probably wasn't your intention, but it comes off as that). And no, even if he wasn't jipyeong but for example Alex that said the harsh words, I would still think the same and that the punch wasn't warranted. It's harassment and if he went to the police he could sue him easily, showing cctv where the first punch was thrown by nds. (look at chairman won that tried to sue for a "simple" nameplate throwing). Frist of all, yongsan says to hjp "then explain this situation to us. Put your emotions aside ad be as harsh as you want". Funny thing is, he didn't say anything that wasn't true, he was stating the truth, I know that truth was painful for them, but it was truth nonetheless, and he didn't even raise his voice. So no, excuse me but the punch was out of line no matter how you look at it.
"he couldn't bring himself to express it to him face-to-face as jipyeong tends to brush off the gratitude and compliments thrown at him out of embarrassment." He's not close enough with hjp to know what he thinks and how he reacts to gratitude, so no in the context of the drama I don't accept this explanation as valid. What's right is that a proper apology was needed. "I'm sorry that I punched you that one time.", no matter how embarassing it was for either of them, this could have been another moment of growth (look at yongsan telling in jae about the rude question he asked her in ep 1!).
I don't care if it was his comfort item, what I care about is that the letters were not HIS in the first place, and he was in the wrong for wanting to keep them as if they were his. I agree both of them indulge in a childish "competition", as we see in ep 7 too or the parking lot scene with the scrunchie, but what's different in the elevator scene, is that hjp RIGHT AFTER called dalmi and said he was sorry and explained what happened and that she still can go after him since he didn't go far yet. Yep, he didn't say sorry to nds, and didn't clear the misunderstanding to nds immediately, but kept the charade in the elevator in ep 15 with food talk. But hey, neither dalmi herself clarified to nds that she wasn't dating hjp (but nds still touched her hair, even when he was thinking she was "taken"...), and rememembr who in the end was the one to clear to nds that he can go look for sdm and that he beat the memories with his hands alone? Meaning that he wasn't dating sdm? HJP. And that was enough for me for a reediming scene. Even though he already said sorry to Dalmi, the real victim who was "used" by hjp to create the misunderstaning, not dosan.
I think I replied to everything? Let me know if I forgot something, the example of growth and how he could dimonstrate he learned his mistakes are written above :) And yeah as you noticed I wasn't reffering to growth in the professional sense, but on a personal level, in terms of acknowledging his mistakes and owning up to them.
I'm also here just to read comments. Honestly none of them have experienced our journey while watching this. They…
Exactly. And in all these weeks all we did was discussing and pointing out plot flaws, character flaws and inconsitencies aka we did constructive criticism, sprinkled with some funny and sarcastic comments here and there. It's not like we were just here saying "I hate X chararcter" every day and never explained why we didn't like some things and character's actions etc lol
HJP gang! (And everyone with whom i shared my frustrations over the past months) add me here! I can't find all…
Same! I tried in the last two days to friend as many people as possible that were here for weeks commenting, but I might have missed someone! So yeah if anyone wants to add me too, go ahead :D
while i agree dosan is not the best male lead, let's not forget he's actually really really socially awkward.…
I didn't see the growth you're talking about. In fact, all the things I pointed out are from the second half of the drama, or even the last third, which means he not only didn't at least grow, but somewhat regressed, never learning from his mistakes. I actually liked him until ep 4/5, his awkwardness and all, liked that he was this flawed and insecure, but I thought he then would undergo through some character development throughout the drama, which he didn't. This is a drama, and like in every work of fiction (book, film, drama, etc) the audience/reader needs to see some kind of growth in a character, he can't stay the same throughout the drama. It's not enough for him to say after the 3 years time skip that he "changed" and that he's "more confident now" (his actual words, not mine), while in reality his statement is not supported by his actions (aka he still, even after saying that, feels insecure about hjp and the letters, asks for the plant like a child, doesn't want to give back the letters after saying previously that he was okay with swapping, needs to overhear dalmi's conversations to know what to say to her). You also mention the fact that if we take into consideration his upbringing it makes sense that he couldn't deal with situations or emotions well, and you said this to somewhat put into context the punch he threw at Jipyeong. And you say that he learned he was wrong and grew from, but in reality... he never apologized for it. There can't be growth if he never acknowledges the things he did and doesn't apologize directly to the person he did wrong to.
Also, even if Dalmi chooses to accept and forgive him for the lies and past wrongdoings, it doesn't make it okay for him to never realize they were actual mistakes and wrongdoings in the first place and never apologizing for them (the only thing he apologizes for is the lie about the letters that one time, and she forgives him right in that episode). I actually don't think Dalmi even realizes they were mistakes and wrongdoings (I'm not talking about the lie about the letters that she forgave him for, and as you noticed I didn't include that in the comment above), because neither the drama addresses them as wrong. And that exactly is my problem with this drama regarding Dosan's characterization.
Ignore my profile pic with hjp, and pretend hjp was never interested in dalmi. Here are the reasons why people…
Had to put a spoiler because it's all spoiler, but if anyone who loved dosan is interested in WHY people don't like him, maybe you could try reading? Who knows, maybe it will widen your perspective and you might become aware of some things you haven't noticed. Maybe not, I don't really know you and you might have different values than mine, so I'm just putting it out there if anyone wants to read :) Just don't dismiss every critique as simple "hate" because people have their reasons for their negative reactions, even if you might not agree.
Ignore my profile pic with hjp, and pretend hjp was never interested in dalmi. Here are the reasons why people are saying that dosan is a character that doesn't have character growth, and that he gradually becomes problematic or at the very least dislikable through the drama: - destroys the nameplate: never says he's sorry about the mess he created afterwards, drama and dalmi never address this as wrong - makes a deal with alex without disclosing what alex said about wanting only him, signs the contract in one day, but then blames yongsan for stopping hjp from calling them - punches hjp after his friend asks him to be honest and put his feelings aside, right after asks for his help: never says sorry, drama and dalmi never address this as wrong - stalks dalmi and listens in her conversations when she asked him to leave her alone for the time being: this is considered romantic, never addressed as wrong by the drama or reprimanded by dalmi - leaves drunk girl in the park alone: never addressed as wrong by the drama - uses information attained by stalking to comfort her, otherwise he wouldn't be able to help motivate her for demoday: considered romantic - says he only has dalmi, and nothing else, ignoring the fact that he has a supportive (financially) father a supportive emotionally mother, a supportive extended family, 2 best friends that support everything he does: never addressed as wrong - says "rich jerk" to an older man, with a higher position, that is not his real brother, and they're not close and they don't like e/o: remember this is South Korea and respect to ppl with a higher position and/or age is very important, however it's okay for dosan to say it without ever saying sorry afterwards - touches dalmi's hair (mountain scene) and puts her head on his shoulder, while still thinking that she and hjp are in a relationship, because sdm never clarified that they weren't to him: seen as romantic and not wrong by the drama - overhears again on purpose dalmi and injae conversation and uses this information to inspire/motivate her and proceed with the risky business: never addressed as wrong, but it's romantic instead - says sailing off without a map was marvellous and he never regrets it, while knowing that by doing so dalmi and saha lost theri jobs, when he and twosans went to silicon valley and became rich: dalmi and drama considers this romantic - doesn't want to give back the letters that were never his to begin with: never addressed as wrong by the drama - asks for the plant saying it was given to him, while in reality dalmi brought it to him only after meeting him once at the networking party, which means she still didn't know the "real" dosan, and the plant was still meant for the penpal-dosan aka jipyeong: never addressed by drama, on the contrary it looks like the drama supports dosan in his request and thinks that he's right
Only for this, the drama doesn't deserve more than a 7/7.5 rating IMO: what kind of morals does it teach its audience if the wrong actions are never seen as wrong but instead brushed off and some even celebrated?
Spoiler alert kid....there are people that haven't watched this drama
Yes actually! Lol And you're on point, one time I really wanted to comment that this comment section looked like a groupchat xD
Now that a lot of new people are coming and commenting I realized they might be bothered by the spoilers sadly. We created a cute community here, I'm kinda sad to let go ahaha
I noticed new people are coming and commenting here, sometimes preaching even if they didn't watch the drama lol It was nice and liberating commenting within our bubble before xD I'll miss yall for sure (no I'm not tired saying this for the nth time lmao)
It's a little funny how dosan is considered an underdog by some viewers, but hjp is just the typical rich and successful character to them. Idk if you forgot but Jipyeong is ALSO an underdog, from an orphan after struggling he became successful and rich, with no financial support from parents (unlike dosan). It's just that his path to wealthy life is offscreen during those 15 years.
And if you think about it, dosan also becomes successful and wealthy only after the 3 years time skip. They're not different on that front. Don't come here and tell that we saw dosan's growth and alongside dalmi at that. No we did not see it. Before the timeskip they weren't successful. If it wasn't for alex interested in dosan they wouldn't have made it into sandbox after the pitch, and they wouldn't have won the money on demoday, which means theirs would have been an unsuccessful business in terms of how much money and success it could bring. And even if dosan didn't go to sandbox in the first place, he would have been just as rich and successful, because alex would have recruited SST all the same. Dosan (and other 2 sans) literally becomes rich and successful offscreen, just like HJP.
In conclusion, what I'm trying to say, you can't say that you're inspired because it's an underdog story of dosan that becomes successful lol and diminishing hjp as just the rich jerk at that, just like dosan did and without ever apologising.
The toxic commenters: uwu i will miss yall, this place felt like home, let's meet again somewhere else next time
