Hope Viki or some other streaming service that translates picks this up.
Probably not, because NHK doesn't "sell" their works to streaming services that make money through advertising. They pulled all their stuff from Netflix, too, when Netflix announced they were going to run ads.

Spoiler me please, does this turn into a romance? I watched the first few episodes but I'm kind of reluctant to continue if it does, even though I love these slow slice of life dramas with a lot of dialogue. Love them as friends and I still hope to one day find a drama that shows men and women can indeed be friends without turning into lovers.

Feels like they tried to make a 30 - 45 minute movie into 15 minutes and just put in more or less random scenes in chronological order without connecting them to each other. We get zero explanations why something happens, it just does. And on a side note, the sound quality is pretty bad. One scene when the girls are talking it's super quiet and the volume needs to be turned all the way up, the next scene some dude screams so loud, your ears fall off.

So what’s your point here? They should leave them alone and see decline in their population? Really I am curious…
Marriage ≠ population growth. Japan has a lot more (and bigger) issues when it comes to their declining birth rate than just people not wanting to marry. My point was that I was trying to make a joke because there are way too many dramas that glorify marriage in a way that says "if you're not married by age XX, you're disqualified to be a part of society" and that this is an extremely outdated viewpoint.

Unfortunately there'll probably never be subs for this one if no one requests it directly to a subber. It's not listed anywhere (d-addicts Fansub Map for example) and the raws aren't really available if you don't specifically look for it. So if you're waiting for subs, you probably don't need to hold your breath.

Review Mare
was planning to watch this. nt anymore after reading your review. any asadora recommendations??
If you like a quirky energetic Heroine (and cake) you'll definitely at least enjoy the first and the third part of the story. I just really (really) don't like when a guy (or romance in general) gets in the way of a woman's character growth or "prevents her from reaching her goals/dreams", as if it wants to say "her first priority should be to support her husband". It's something that, for me, totally undermines what an Asadora is all about, but if you don't really have a problem with that, than you'd definitely enjoy Mare.

What are you looking for in an Asadora? I honestly could write you an essay, but I'll limit it to three recs because the comment is going to be too long anyways ;)
If you want something funny with a pinch of seriousness and a quirky Heroine, try Amachan, my favorite. It probably has the most interesting characters all-around and a real uplifting "always get up regardless of how many times you get knocked down" story.
If you want an overall really good story with a down-to-earth heroine that knows how to stand up for herself and earns respect through hard work, try Natsuzora. In my opinion the best all-around Asadora.
And my third rec would be Hanbun Aoi. It's pretty light-hearted on the surface but also shows the characters, especially the Heroine, struggle (real hard) with life at times. If you like people working hard to overcome obstacles theme, you'll really like this one.
I have a few others I think are really good, but these three are probably my favorites.

Probably, yes, but if enough people watched the drama/anime, then I'd say enough people want to watch what happens next and how it ends and I think that's what the studios are going for. I don't know how much money 4 or 5 25 min episodes of a drama generate through sponsors, TV stations, viewership, etc, but I'm pretty sure it's less than a 90 min movie if half the viewers of the drama go and buy cinema tickets. But that's only me assuming things. I think what also plays in their favor is that Japan is still much more analogue than the west is... they still rather buy CDs than download/stream music and rather go watch a movie at the cinema than subscribe to a streaming service, etc.

so they are making a movie... -_- Why do so many Japanese dramas do a movie sequel instead of 2nd season of the…
It's been like that with anime for a pretty long time now and it gets criticized a lot, but unfortunately the tactic is working. Drama production studios probably picked up on it because of examples like Demon Slayer. The sequel to the anime series became the highest grossing Japanese movie of all time and since then almost every sequel, regardless of anime or live action, is made into a theatrical movie. They're basically saying "if you want the continuation/ending of the story you have to pay for it, because we want to make as much money as possible" and are getting away with it.

I wonder when we timetravelled back to 2005, when everything was hardsubbed on a streaming site. Shame that this one's not downloadable nor any Softsubs available, same as Dasada.

Seems like basically every JDrama is a miniseries according to MDL because most of them only have 8 - 10 x 45…
Hey! :)
My comment wasn't written with any malicious intent, sorry if it seemed that way.

I said "it's basically a KDrama site" because seemingly 1 in 50 news stories on the front page are not about Korean Drama/Movies, that's the only reason. I'm not at all interested in Korean stuff, but I know that it's more mainstream and more people talk about it, so I can understand it to a certain degree. It's hard to balance what's popular and giving different countries spotlight, but it's pretty (a bit too much imo) lopsided in my opinion, hence my remark.

And you confirmed my other point that "basically every JDrama is a Miniseries according to MDL". I already figured it's more or less automatic if a Drama has less than X episodes because most country's Dramas are more like KDrama or even longer. And because almost every JDrama is less than 11 episodes they are almost all declared as Miniseries. I think it's a bit unnecessary, but that's all the beef I have with this tag :D.

Thanks for the recommendation in your other comment, I'm basically only interested in Japanese content and I have a few sites that are focused on on that, but I'm definitely going to check it out :)

This story is definitely worth telling, but I wonder why they made this into an Asadora. If Matsushita's character is a heroine then every housewife who's basically a housemaid without pay and completely obeys everything her husband, and every other man in the story for that matter, says, is one. You could say apologizing to and for her husband while simultaneously idolizing him are her favorite things to do, to the point her own child thinks it's useless to tell her anything important.
From the Asadoras I've seen so far the best comparison would be Manpuku, both are stories about a housewife who 120% supports her workaholic husband as the main point of the story. The main difference between these two stories is, besides the topic, that the couple in Manpuku have actual conversations while the husband in Gegege no Nyobo just orders his wife around with commands as if she were a cheap housemaid and otherwise completely ignores her and everyone else in his family if she/they want to say something or has/have a problem.
Also... I would really love to smack her parents around for hours. Especially the father, who still lives in the Meiji era and LOVES to sell his daughters to random men.

Well, if enough young men see this ML as a role model there's no need for concern in Japan about not having enough creepy, arrogant stalkers around in the future. If someone would behave like that with anyone where I'm from they'd probably get a restraining order instead of a relationship out of their actions. I was asking myself a few times in the first two episodes alone if this girl (deliberate choice of word) has Stockholm Syndrome or if she's simply too horny to make rational decisions. And what's up with her friends/colleagues? Do they seriously encourage her to just go along with the sexual harrassment just because they think he's good looking? I guess I should really refrain from watching dramas with Shoujo Manga plots, I can't think irrational enough to enjoy them.

Pretty funny drama. I was never interested in building models myself, but watching someone assemble one I can definitely understand the appeal. I love Yoda Yuuki's deadpan humor here, but it's a shame she either didn't want to or wasn't allowed to use her hands for anything but appearance when her face was shown. Unfortunately it was blatantly obvious she didn't do anything except clicking stuff together after the detailed work was already done. Maybe they should at least have some women do the work when the camera's zoomed in on the hands in these kinds of dramas, it's pretty strange to watch a not-that-young man's hand when it's supposed to be a young woman all the time.

Ok Japanese filmmakers must refuse to give up their feminine thoughts of women even if they are supposedly bad…
Sorry for commenting on a 2 year-old post, but is the sexism very apparent? I dropped or didn't even start almost all of the Japanese police (or work focused in general) dramas with female leads because of it. A lot of the time they have to fight more against their bosses and colleagues than the actual criminals/problems which is a really annoying, but unfortunately real, plot device in 95% of crime dramas with female leads.

Just finished ep 3 and this is such a cute drama! It's so cute and ridiculous and even has made me cry already…
There's a difference between "romantic love" and the "adoration for an idol", which is the case in the anime in my opinion, at least in the earlier episodes. There are other hints later on, but I don't know if they are romantic or just because they started to care a lot about each other as friends. But there's definitely GL vibes between Maki and another member (Yumeri? I can't remember) and they're not even subtle.

Hahha small cleavage doesnt make one a good actress either. It is just your bias against large bust.It is the sad…
Yes, I emphasized it in my second post because that's what you criticized, even though my original post wasn't focused on it at all. Actually, I only wrote about her bust once, which was that it is the only thing the creators got right if you compare the drama to the anime, and that statement isn't even adressed to her but the creators who did a really poor job all around. Every actor in this show was bad and that's simply a matter of script and/or skill and has nothing to do with any body part. I picked out Nana because she was the worst actor/actress in every drama/movie I've seen her in and I simply don't know any of the other actors.
I hope I could clear this up, even though I only repeated my original post, because getting accused of sexism or the like is an absolute first for me. Which is by the way why I criticized the industry for casting people without acting skills solely because of their face or body proportions.

I didn't say she's a bad actress because of her bust size. I said she's a bad actress, period, and that she probably only gets roles because of her breasts (you only need to look at the characters she plays in all the anime adaptions). She should stay with gravure modeling because that's something she does well and is naturally inclined to. I know it's a sad reality all over the world and often not even her (or all the idols who can't act but are still casted in everything) choice, but then it's the responsibility of the creators and casting director to cast someone who fits the character AND can act. That's by the way something that's not restricted to gender for me, I also hate it if some guy only gets casted because he's handsome or has cool looks.
I also don't have a "bias against big bust size", in fact I couldn't care less about it. My bias is against "casting someone BECAUSE of her big bust size even though she can't act". I like Ayase Haruka for example and she's pretty well off, too. But I like her roles and her acting skills and that's enough for me.

is it just me or did miniseries in japan become suddenly wayy more common?
Seems like basically every JDrama is a miniseries according to MDL because most of them only have 8 - 10 x 45 Minutes episodes, instead of the 16 x 70 minute or more KDramas. And MDL is basically a KDrama only site that happens to have Japanese stuff in their database.

Is this gay? Not belittling the significance of platonic friendships just wondering. Just saw an ad for it on…
You probably got your answer already, but no, it's just friendship. At least from what I've seen and read in interviews and trailers. But, seeing as the two mains are pretty good friends outside of the movie, it would've been interesting if it had a romantic aspect to it in my opinion.
