I enjoy toxic characters in yaoi. I like the soft, sad way Park looks at Chet and I like how even in the midst of his psychotic rages, Chet shows some semblance of care for Park and depends on him. Also, I find them far better looking than the main couple. So yes, Im invested in their relationship. You’re not, so move on.

As I said, the main couple are fine but I am not blown away by them or anything.

Also, real life shipping is a huge turn off for me, so I try my best to ignore fan delusions about “real life couples”.

The directorial note for Chet’s actor must be to come in at a 100 and keep it there. Not a single moment where he isn’t crashing out or chewing the scenery. I love the way his bodyguard looks at him with sad puppy dog eyes. Really most invested in the relationship between those two.

The main couple is fine but I don’t feel fireworks.

The production/direction is very basic.

There’s real life average looking and there’s TV/film “average looking”. There’s a reason why the vast vast majority of romances are not focused on characters who are would be considered average looking in real life.

The trope of the super hot popular guy pining for the mousy nerd is complete wish fulfilment fantasy, in no way shape or form is this meant to be “relatable”. So I personally would prefer to see pretty people in fantasy.

Whole lot of projection going on. The fact that you have to log into your sock account to leave shady comments tells me you are taking this personally and that’s not my problem 🤷🏽‍♀️

We are talking about fictional characters here, not real life. Of course, if the narrative showcases that the reason is inner beauty, that’s completely valid. My comment is based on the first episode and casual first impressions, which does not go in depth into the characters. I thought that was pretty obvious, that I was talking about outer beauty, not other factors making someone attractive.

BL land is very far from real life and very few people are watching romance for overtly plain characters.

Irl, of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This show, however, is fiction and the characters are created to drive the narrative. So the narrative is unsuccessful if only Watarai sees the “hidden beauty”, and the viewers are unable to see it. Now if it turns out to be a story about how Watarai falls for Hiroki’s inner kindness because he performed some good deed, that’s a different story. That’s not what I’m discussing here of course.

There are plenty of stories with a hot, universally desirable ML and a relatively timid and mousy MC. Eg: Cherry Magic, Secret Lover, Personal Weatherman etc. In BL landia, that doesn’t mean the MC is actually devoid of all appeal, very few people want to see plain people in romance.
