Well, for me I think it's more how they executed the romance storyline, it started good for the first arc and then, it was not that romance focus in the second arc, I think tasks, mission and whatever duty was superior than the romance aspect. The magic of the EL and ELoD are the 3 arcs focus more on the leads love story development and everything was minor compared to that but was built to move the plot forward.
