It was such an incredible idea, exploring the existential horror of a fictional character who becomes aware that they're a fictional character rather than the classic transmigration, but it really got lost towards the end. It's like the writers themselves didn't know how to solve the time loop they created so they just kinda threw out the rules they'd established in order to have that happy ending lol. I still don't quite get how it worked. The chemistry was great. The lead's relationship was so sweet. The monologues got incredibly repetitive in the latter half though. I think it's still worth watching despite its flaws.
Currently watching this and while I'm not too far in yet, so far the tone is so strange that it almost feels a bit distasteful? It's shot like I'm watching New Life Begins, but thematically it is much more like The Double. There are some pretty dark events that take place in this drama that are overlayed by weirdly lighthearted comedic moments and jaunty background music. That's not to say that humor and serious topics can't coexist, but the timing is not great in this show. It's a shame too because the actors are clearly capable of delivering.
Oh I honestly like the idea & can see more chemistry between Long Shen & Wu Yi, Wu Yi just had to remind…
I don't mind a more mature Ji Ling, but even with more warmth I have a hard time seeing Long Shen keeping that playful cheer and sweetness which is what I like about Ji Ling π
I'm so relieved that we learn what we do about Ji Ling. I was worried we were gonna get stuck with the dragon deity and I was like noo please π I'm so tired of cold, nonchalant men in romances. Ji Ling is so beautifully chalant lmao
I gotta go to bat for these two because the mischaracterization in these comments is killing me π I keep seeing…
Also justice for Yi Fan, man π She has my heart and I could write a whole book defending her. Obviously silently skipping town for six months and not saying anything to your boyfriend and best friend is wild. She should've confided in Sang Yan. And she definitely should've told the SML to kick rocks sooner. But calling her weak and undeserving of love I genuinely don't understand. She went a majority of her life with zero support. Reaching out would not come naturally especially after being disappointed and abandoned whenever she tried to reach out to her mother. Her family turned a blind eye while she was preyed upon and physically assaulted. She has PTSD, was definitely depressed, and has lived a really rough life. She's kind of a low energy character for those reasons, and yet despite sometimes struggling to just tell people plainly to F off, she still was a lot more assertive than you'd expect her to be. How can someone who pushed on like she did and endured for so long be weak? Also idc I like her personality. She is sweet and had a wry humor that was quieter than Sang Yan's but still mirrored his in a way.
I gotta go to bat for these two because the mischaracterization in these comments is killing me π I keep seeing people say he didn't take enough initiative like what?? Sang Yan spent three years by Yi Fanβs side, only having eyes for her and planning a future with her in mind. It ended in rejection (for reasons he didn't know at the time). He then spends college still pining after her and as soon as they reunited, found a way to be around her even though still, as far as he knows, she cruelly rejected him and then skipped town to attend college with another man instead. The entire time they live together, he is essentially courting her though she doesn't realize it at the time. At one point, he blatantly tells her that if she wants him to be her boyfriend he could make it happen lol.
While Yi Fan does end up pretty openly pursuing him once she realizes her feelings, I feel like that makes sense? It's clear to anyone with eyes that Sang Yan loves her, but he's not completely certain of her feelings and Sang Yan already tends to nudge her out of her comfort zone enough. And he has feelings too. I'd be insecure about pursuing a relationship with someone who already rejected me once. And for someone who often feels powerless and has the history that she does, I think it's beautiful that Yi Fan was able to be more assertive and take defining steps when it came to her love for Sang Yan.
Sure he's rude and has a sharp tongue sometimes, but he didn't come off as mean-spirited to me. He just likes to tease Yi Fan, and it clearly isn't bothering her. It usually seems to just make her laugh or fluster her. Also I get the impression that they're both meant to be kind of an acquired taste for each other. Yi Fan, for example, is flighty, pretty non communicative, and melancholy, and while we know why, you have to be like Sang Yan, who has the right amount of audacity and gentle consideration for it to work.
What rating could ya'll possibly be giving this show that it's already at 7.7? It's been out for like two seconds π I'm assuming they are spamming 1 stars because of an actor or something equally stupid. That's usually what causes this. The show is shot beautifully and the plot is interesting so far. We start off with a kind of whodunnit mystery which I always love. The combat is pretty cool too. It's not just super fast slicing. The way they use their magical weapons is creative and sick to watch.
If you ever find something that scratches the itch, let me know. I'm also having withdrawals. I think the best…
Right now I'm watching Ancient Love Poetry idk if you've seen it. It has a similar vibe and a lot of aspects to it that I enjoyed about The Legend of Shenli. It's also a xianxia with a powerful FL goddess who is the God of Chaos. The ML is also quite calm though a little more aloof than Xing Zhi. Their romance is so sweet and somewhat ill-fated in a similar way as Shenli and Xing Zhi's was.
The FL reads as younger than Shenli though despite them both being like thousands of years old lol. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I think part of why Shenli and Xing Zhi stood out to me was because they felt like two grounded adults falling in love rather than either of them being young.
I just can't get behind her ending up with the emperor because he didn't seem all that heartbroken when she died.
Yeah ideally neither of them would even be on my radar. But since they're determined to have a romance in this show, I would say an adopted brother is a better option than an ex who lowkey sterilized her π
It's honestly sad that Gu Wan is a consistent blind spot for her. She loves her sister so much that she has a hard time accepting that Gu Wan is a serious adversary. Also ngl Lady Su did her big one with her final scheme lol
Mind you, the ML frequently takes on like 20 men at a time and realism is never brought up then π I'm not gonna…
I agree that can also be the case, but when it comes to cdramas, it's usually misogyny. Not to be dramatic but this fanbase has a really bad track record.
Exactly how I feel! Instead of cutting earlier stuff, they should've added more episodes. It's because of how…
Agree 100%. Sometimes I wonder how much communication there is between writers and showrunners because so many shows it seems like they are not on the same page
