First impressions: I really like the trope. It’s been a while since we’ve seen it in a C-drama (especially with censorship and all), so it feels refreshing.
That said, there’s a bit of polarity in the production. On one hand, the set design and CGI are surprisingly solid, really good, actually. But on the other hand, the editing feels weak, almost sloppy. The way the scenes are put together just doesn’t flow well, which is a shame because it kind of undermines the bigger strengths.
I’m only on episode 3, so maybe things will improve, but so far I’m enjoying it overall despite those flaws. Another thing I noticed: sometimes the voices don’t quite match the lip movements, which might also tie back to weak post-production.
And just a side note (my personal pet peeve): I really dislike that generic “child voice” dub that so many dramas use. It instantly makes things feel low-budget, even though I know this production isn’t.
I was just watching some C-drama edits on social media and it reminded me how good this drama was. The aesthetic was so on point, really dark and beautiful, and the actors completely delivered. There were so many standouts in the cast, and every character felt layered, textured, and interesting in their own way. It made the whole universe feel so much more immersive. The CGI, the budget, and the production were all amazing too. I’ll admit I don’t really remember the storyline anymore, but I do remember how much I loved watching it.
imo he is probably the most handsome Chinese actor (and im a guy). I rate him and XuKai. not just those new guys.…
Yeah, I agree. He’s very handsome especially in costume dramas, but unfortunately his reputation over the past few years has really taken a hit. C- netz say his looks can’t hide his “oiliness” , meaning they find him corny, self-absorbed, and poke fun at his ‘try-hard’ characters. It probably all ties back to that firefighter drama he starred in, which was really poorly received. The comments about him online are brutal. It’s a shame :(
she definitely is my fav. I think whole mainland love her. even though there was no CP. It not stop netizens for…
yesss! I hope the strong fanbase pushes for Violet Fairy to ONLY be the official CP in season 2. Nagong Wan was a mistake. Her character isn’t interesting and feels like someone the author created early on just to be the love interest. As the world-building expanded and more compelling elements were introduced, she stopped having a real role, yet the story keeps dragging her along.
Before moving on to another drama, I just want to say something about Yang Yang. I know he’s gotten a lot of criticism and hate on Chinese social media for his acting, and that the past few years have been tough for him since Fireworks of My Heart. But in this Dong Hua, I truly loved his character so much. I could feel the depth and layers in the way he played Han Li.
First off, let’s not skip over the looks. He just fits this character visually. Even though Han Li is described as fairly average-looking and Yang Yang is objectively gorgeous, his appearance still matches closely with the animation and fan art.
Then there’s his portrayal. Han Li isn’t someone who talks much or openly shares his feelings. His internal monologue is mostly strategies and observations, yet Yang Yang still managed to convey his emotions, whether it was contempt, greed, or peaceful contentment, with incredible subtlety through in his expressions alone.
Even though people often say he’s not the best actor, I think this was a strong performance. He embodied Han Li perfectly, and honestly, I don’t think I will watch season two if hes not returning as the male lead.
wow wow what an ending, this was trule excellent. it checked all the right boxes for me, I enjoyed every minute of this show. I really hope there will be a season 2 with most of this cast
So far, this drama is so good. I have enjoyed every minute. The fighting scenes are phenomenal. Usually, I zone out or grab my phone during fight scenes, but these are so captivating and beautifully done that I cannot look away. They pull you in completely.
I am honestly shocked the rating is so low. This is an S+ tier drama with a huge budget, yet not enough people are watching. I am a huge romance drama fan, and even though there is romance here, I almost wish there was not. The story itself is so immersive that it does not need it.
I love that it is not political, especially for a cultivation drama. There are no endless villain plots or overly complicated arcs, just a more low-key and grounded pace that lets you live in the world. There are slow, contemplative moments that almost feel like The Legend of Shen Li, which I adore.
I binged what is out already and now I hate that I have to wait for more. If you are unsure about watching this, just do it. It is so worth
