I need to say this, because not enough people are, and it’s frustrating to watch a show like this go underappreciated. There’s a certain kind of viewer who treats dramas like a checklist. They flood MDL asking, “Do they break up? Is there a second lead? Is it angsty or sweet?”. And when it doesn’t, they tune out. These people aren’t watching dramas, they’re screening for comfort. And honestly, that mindset is a big reason why this drama, and many others like it, don’t get rated as highly as they deserve and also why you see people complaining about story elements that are clearly intentional.
Because this drama doesn’t cater to those cookie cutter expectations. It’s dark. It’s vengeful. It’s driven by fury and power plays. The leads aren’t just flawed, they’re villain-coded in the truest sense. There’s no redemption arc. The female lead straight-up commits murder. That kind of storytelling, especially for a female character in a C-drama, is practically unheard of.
And I say this as someone who loves romance. But I’m not watching this for swoons. I’m watching because it’s different. Because her character feels like an outlet for people who carry excess rage, the kind of person who just wants to see everything burn. People like me. Not the ones who want to be comforted by a familiar storyline.
Sure, some of the writing leans a little too convenient. But in the bigger picture, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that in a dramaland oversaturated with righteous, selfless, endlessly loving leads, this one is just rage. And that deserves to be seen. And praised for what it is.
Hanyan is basically a morally grey character? 🤔 One of the best ngl. There's similar characters to Hanyan,…
yeah I can't think of any fl who also committed murder the way she did. in terms of characterization, her type is rare in the cdrama universe. its entertaining
She married him knowing he has a daughter. It was her duty to be nice to that little girl. Instead she behaved…
You’ve clearly missed the point every single time. At this stage, it’s not even worth correcting, you’re just not built for this conversation. Stick to surface-level takes. This one’s way above your head.
Hard disagree. It's not misogyny as long as it's not uniquely about women. Parents have an obligation to be parents.…
At this point, if you still don’t understand the issue, that’s not a lack of clarity on my part, it’s a lack of comprehension on yours. I’ve already explained this multiple times, slowly and thoroughly. If you can’t keep up, just say that. If your brain can’t process nuance beyond “she didn’t hug a kid = bad woman,” then respectfully, this conversation is above your level.
You're absolutely right! I checked this page before watching episodes 19 – 21 and I genuinely thought Han Yan…
Exactly. It’s wild how people are so quick to jump on her for not reciprocating a hug, as if she didn’t just watch 6 people die in the span of two days. Like, hello? She’s probably in shock, traumatized, grieving in real time. But nope, all of that gets thrown aside because a woman didn’t perform emotional availability on cue. The entitlement to her tenderness, even in her own pain, is the most tired, gendered expectation. And to have these takes while watching a drama that is clearly feminist? That’s some Olympic-level mental backflipping. crazy work

You’re missing the point. What is misogynistic is the assumption that a woman automatically becomes a mother just because she’s married to someone with a child. No one would place the same emotional expectations on a man who marries into fatherhood and doesn’t immediately bond with his stepchild. This isn’t about parenting, it’s about how fast and unquestioningly we expect women to give of themselves.
The issue isn’t about failing as a parent. It’s about being forced into parenthood by societal expectation, without consent, space, or care. That pressure is not neutral, it disproportionately falls on women. That’s where the misogyny lies. And honestly, the mental gymnastics you’re doing to miss that? I don’t know if you’re just unaware, or actually committed to misunderstanding the point so you can keep pretending it’s about morals instead of gendered expectations.
If you think Han Yan was in the wrong for not reciprocating her stepdaughter’s affection, that’s misogyny. Full stop. It’s rooted in the idea that women owe love, care, and maternal energy just because they’re women. How can you expect a young woman, who just lost her own mother, to suddenly become one? There’s something deeply insidious about the way society demands motherliness from women as if it’s automatic or obligatory. That’s not compassion. That’s internalized misogyny. Check yourself.
Did anyone else feel off about the arc with the 15 year old courtesan? First of all, its strange no one bats an eye but making her a rival to Boonta, the female lead, felt extra strange. Why is Boonta, an adult woman, being portrayed as jealous of a 15 year old?
Maybe they were aiming for realism, but there was a nonchalance to the way its addressed that felt off, especially since the show didn’t seem critical of it. Boonta is supposed to be a modern woman shouldn’t she have said something? Or at least reacted differently to a 15 yr old doing s work in a brothe!? Plus that old woman who said something along the lines of meh that’s normal, there are even younger courtesans. And the the madam?? who sold her off?? and we, the viewers are supposed to just be cool with the madam??
This drama is truly excellent. The pacing and storytelling are top-notch, with no dull moments throughout. It’s a lighthearted sci-fi with hints of mystery, yet it carries an underlying social message. The acting is outstanding, and the characters are incredibly charming and wholesome. The soundtrack is amazing, and Jian Ci is such a cutie I’m officially a fan. This show is severely underrated!
Soon in episode 8-9 n she is her own warrior. She doesn't need anyone to save her. That was the beauty of this…
No, this is about women’s empowerment. Women have not yet been fully liberated and do not stand on equal footing with men. Erasing their struggle and collapsing their experience under a universal umbrella disregards the reality of gendered oppression. FL is living a distinctly female experience, and her struggles are deeply rooted in gender dynamics.
