ML has to agree to a concubine. By refusing to accept another woman, she would be branded as a "jealous wife"…
Interesting. I haven't seen that episode yet but in the books GTY interrupts and refuses the concubines, citing he wants di-children (children from the official wife) and how would concubines help that.
Now I find myself psuedo-watching the raws to figure out when to watch the english subs to prevent cliffhangers. They might not be major cliffhangers but I want emotional arcs to be satisfied when I watch.
I really love that the tension/conflict between the leads never comes from outsiders but truly from between themselves. It's never for the reasons the antagonists want. It's the opposite. ML isn't crazy with jealousy and GTY doesn't want concubines (tongfan, ce fei, etc). GTY is upset ML isn't upset about the concubine; but again, think of this time period. ML is striving to be the best Big Madame possible. She's seen how shit goes down in this crazy harem family politics.
Can't wait for the subs because I'm missing so much with my puny Mandarin.
That's fair. It's more slice-of-life but life during the Song Dynasty does involve of class separation and rigid…
Re: Nothing Gold Can Stay - My Mandarin isn't good enough to just watch without English subtitles and the last time I went looking I could only find raw episodes. T_T
Im trying but there is WAAAAAY too much Slavery in this for me.I dont see anything romantic in this at all ...…
That's fair. It's more slice-of-life but life during the Song Dynasty does involve of class separation and rigid hierarchy. The romance between the leads doesn't spark until episode 22/23 and doesn't really get going until the mid-to-late 30s.
It's probably one of my favorite Chinese dramas, tied with Yanxi Palace so far and second to Nirvana in Fire. I really love the character progression and arcs in this.
after ep 50, all those scheming and back-stabbing are giving a headache, not sure if i can take 20 more episodes…
Yes, there will be a happy ending but there's going to be more ups and downs. Even though I hate the scheming... I love how the leads hold true to one another. They're diverging from the book more but there should be one, if not two or more big incidents but this show will end up on a happy note.
The author isn't a person from the old era...it's just her estimation from reading a few history books maybe.…
It's probably not far-fetched. If the noblemen/land managers/etc are good, then the people below are treated relatively well to well. If they're bad then it's a whole range of negative to terrible to horrific behavior.
" 'ML believe that true love..... ... " ... so true.! I believe GTY was more disappointed with himself rather…
I don't think QH turned bad. Don't forget the majority of the Gu family do some shady shit and dump all the blame on GTY's name. They can't do that like they did in the past with his new standing and reputation. My Mandarin isn't the best but I think GTY even comments on QH's strong morality in the preview.
I don't think Qi Heng turned bad coz it's against his nature, but I cannot be sure coz I read the novel a while…
In the book, concubines are forced in. It seems like in the show, ML manages to sidesept that. I don't know if that will prove true for the rest of the show though. It seems like the Empress Dowager is trying to send some concubines in the latest raw episodes.
Let me preface by saying I haven't read the novel but I did read spoilers about it.
ML believe that true love is to become susceptible to irrationality, that feelings for another may overwhelm. This is further proved by all the happenings in the Sheng estate, between her father and Concubine Lin, between Madam Wang Shi (official mother) and her father, etc… Men have proven to disappoint countless women in her life. ML made her way through life utilizing her rationality. The idea of possibly losing it in loving someone is incredibly difficult.
Something will also happen to her where she feels that GTY is also holding himself back a little /because/ he doesn’t lose his shit.
Something will later going to happen to a loved one that will prove her point because she will flip her shit to get justice. Unlike the usual, she will bulldoze her way through to force the situation. She’s still using her smarts but it’s not the usual soft tactics.
My understanding is that both of them will acknowledge this about themselves and each other and work on improving it because they do trust each other even if they might not be so madly in love as to occasionally lose conventional rationality about each other.
This current arc is really draggy. I'm finding the acting more wooden now with this weird pacing. :( I'm still enjoying the show but hopefully it tightens up again.
same here!!! my country loves kdramas, I love them too, but now I am shifting to Chinese dramas and I can't stop…
Check out Nirvana in Fire and Nirvana in Fire 2. The first one is one of my top 3 Chinese dramas. Also, Rise of the Phoenixes is supposed to be really good. I haven't seen it yet (it comes out in the US 9/14) but it's been getting a lot of buzz and it's movie-quality cinematography.
Can't wait for the subs because I'm missing so much with my puny Mandarin.
