Before I start watching, lol, are there any annoying female characters?
Not the regular hysterical dumb female characters but there is, yes. I should say that they're 'lightly annoying'. There's the average female bigmouthed warrior and the average sultry seductress. But they have a fonctionning brain. And I've seen so much worse (*replay horrific dramas flashback*).
I don't understand how the MDL's rating algorithm works, but more than 70% of the viewers rate this drama above…
Whatever way, I'll still find a way to find real good dramas and watch them till my heart's content without giving reviews/comments/ratings more credit than reason. I've done this for Hikaru no Go, knowing nothing about the drama's reception and without having read the manga or seen the anime (which precisely I knew from reputation but still wasn't interested in at all). In short, I'll keep following my own judgement (:
It is a question of the scriptwriter without creativity, also normally dramas always have the same cliche things,…
You're right. I do accept a lot of cliches: I know it's part of the game in 98% of dramas. But I won't tolerate when lazy writers normalize sexism or just disrespect the viewers with a ludicrously stupid script/characters. And I think here, we're in for a dumbass FL that won't serve women's representation, to say the least.
You speak the truth. May all your 2021's wishes come true!! I have a feeling somehow that this drama isn't well known because it is a true treasure. Most people won't even take a look at it because it doesn't shine with a 'love' or 'sweet' in the title. You have to be non superficial anyway to appreciate this gem of clever writing/stellar acting/*insert another quality this drama has*
Can somebody finally explain to me why, be it a Chinese or a Korean drama, does the FL:
- always get HERSELF (very stupidly) in troubles - including getting the ML (who asked nothing) into HER troubles - the FL ends up thinking she's being wronged by the ML (which way of thinking resolves nothing) - she yells at him, gesticulates, curses him and annoys him like there's no tomorrow - most of the time even stalking him until she get an apology and/or a compensation for HER mistake - often even swears to and does take revenge on the ML
AND we're supposed to identify ourselves with this kind of obnoxious shitty whinger?? And we're even supposed to hope for a love story to happen to her?? Like hell! I drop this drama right away!
Those pouting faces and outrageous bubbly expressions Liu Shishi make are worthy of the dumbest and useless FL we can encounter in 90% of cdrama. This type of acting didn't age well and is cringey as hell! I can sense from miles away that men will once again be the only one doing the brain work in this story. I'm at the end of my tolerance but only at episode 2...
Mo Xiang Wan is what MDL should call a true strong female lead. Not these noisy brawling brats that end everytime being saved by the ML which compose 80% of dramas
The first episode is such a pleasant surprise! I was not expecting this quality: beautiful cinematography, fascinating…
Episode 9: my initial enthusiasm have cooled down by a lot. Slowness, plot holes, deus ex machina, ML constantly depressed and useless, incoherent romances... This promising drama drift from its first episodes. I feel let down big time. At this point, I'm only staying for the cinematography and the costumes (not for the wigs's adhesive traces non-erased in post-production). And also maybe for Wang Zi Xin's and Zhou Zhan Chi's roles.
The first episode is such a pleasant surprise! I was not expecting this quality: beautiful cinematography, fascinating music, well-managed action scenes, acting on point, witty dialogues and last but not least: real investigation imerging the viewer (with the huge amount of detective dramas, it's a pity that this fondamental element is constantly disregarded by the writers!)! Witty and pleasant to the eyes! I already regret it has only 13 episodes!

You're right! I'm relieved somehow. And that would explain the 8.5 for Nirvana in Fire. Otherwise, I can't comprehend the fact that there is just 0.4 points separating the ultimate drama from the lukewarm Legend of Fu Yao
I put this drama on hold because of her, I'm sure to drop it very soon
In short, I'll keep following my own judgement (:
