Although I dropped this Drama, I was a little tempted to watch it precisely BECAUSE of your description of the super-capable good at everything FEMALE lead. If I had a single yuan for every C Drama I've watched where the MALE lead waltzes in and outshines the FL at her specialised and skilled career, I could film my my dream Drama with my dream cast. So the idea of a VERY, VERY rare inversion of that trope was tempting. I hope you're as scathing about the trope when it IS the male lead is super-talented at everything
Im curious if he didnt have any other offers, because usually the B class actors act in the weekend dramas. Hes…
A lot of very good actors migrate to weekenders. Many weekenders are imo qualitatively better than primetime drivel in terms of script, but because of their length the one thing most weekender leads have in common is age - over 30. This is epcially true of female actors, but since he is in that age group, the move makes sense. Especially as midweek prime time dramas are drying up, and Netflix is only interested in a small handful of recognised 'names'
Fascinating article, thanks! I've never seen HYD, and don't plan to but two of my FAVES are on your list - ISWAK and Kim Sam Soon. To balance that, I absolutely LOATHED Biscuit Teacher, rage quit after 1.5 episodes π
Interesting list, thanks. Very happy to see Howl included - I tried rewatching Goong again recently and couldn't finish it but the OST remains a gem. Also Rest - simply LOVE that song. From the pre 2010 era, here's one of the very first OST tracks I fell in love with, and there's nothing "uncertain" about the factnthat I love it still, after more tyhan a decade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b73FRPKFW-0
Sad that she had to marry young when she hadn't solidified her stance in the industry. Hope the director didn't…
She's nearly 29, that's not extremely young. It's her life, her choice, they've been togethe 3 years so she's had time to decide if this is what she wants. She's not a child
You are not alone. I LOVELOVELOVE 1997, and I've seen it at least 3 times. So I was excited to see there were…
The only thing I liked about 94 was the STP - the pocket sized Min Do Hee with sweary satoori and the very touching romance with her "dongsaeng" was a delight. I tuned out the OTP because that whole "who gets the girl?" game was tedious and uninteresting
please tell me about your life choices ππ 1988 is the best of them
Not for me - the idea of sitting through those STUPIDLY overlong episodes, each one longer than many movies, bored me rigid. Also, the whole "who ends up together?" game was ULTRA boring. One big reason I liked 94 less than 97 (in addition to the fact that 97 had much shorter episodes) was because it played that stupid game more than 97 did, and I know that 88 wasted even MORE time on that part of the storyline. a massive eyeroll for me. I followed all the chatter about 88 while it was airing and every single episode that aired, the conversations about it strengthened my aversion to it. To this day, I'd rather do my own dentistry than watch 88
Once again, I prove myself to be a born contrarian - I absolutely LOVED 1997 (seen it several times), enjoyed 1994 (ESPECIALLY the STP with Min Do Hee) , could not even be bothered starting 1988, it had less than zero appeal for me
Thank you for this list, it has warned me off one I might otherwise have checked out.
Being a fan of modern C Dramas who also HATES misogyny and patronising chauvinism is very difficult. This synopsis, for example rings ALL the usual alarm bells:
"The self-disciplined and diligent editor-in-chief of a magazine, Ye Han, helped the clumsy and lovely physical education teacher Li Xiaoxiao resolve embarrassing crises again and again by chance."
Translated into actual English, this means: "Talented ML helps stupid FL, who can't function without him" Puke! Vomit! Barf! That nasty synopsis is so typical of so many modern C Dramas. If it had been the other way round, with a "self-discplined and diligent" FL helping a "clumsy and lovely" ML, then I might have been interested.
Nevertheless, since I loathe wuxia, xianxia and historical Dramas in general, I stick to modern and keep hunting for not-awful ones. One that sounds like it could be good is not on your list, featuring the awesome Zhou Yu Tong, https://kisskh.at/people/9975-zhou-yu-tong
Im up for all of them Eunjin, yeaJi , JiHye, has nothing booked next, but Somin and Gayoung have something same…
Although she was good in CLOY, I've been a fan of Seo Ji Hye for many years and for me, her strongest performances are in Punch and Yeah That's How It Is - that one ESPECIALLY
JiHye is a common name, which Ji Hye do you mean? I would support Seo Ji Hye (Crash Landing on You) because they're…
You're right, if they use different actors for the young characters, it's not a problem. But it is suprisingly common for them NOT to do this, at least in the 10 years and 400 or so K Dramas I've watched
They should cast Ahn Eunjin, Jung Somin, Moon Gayoung, IU, Seo Yeaji, Lee Sungkyung, Seo Jihye or Jung Yoomin…
JiHye is a common name, which Ji Hye do you mean? I would support Seo Ji Hye (Crash Landing on You) because they're a similar age.
This is important in the context of the story as outlined - the 11 year age gap between him and IU for example makes it difficult to believe they could have been same age school sweethearts. No issue with the adult characters, but big age gaps between actors whose characters were in love in school is a stretch on credibility. Perhaps if they made it university rather than school it would work

No, I *am* right, because I'm talking about MY reaction to it, no one else's.
I repeat " To this day, I'd rather do my own dentistry than watch 88"
