Most of the drama shows their younger selves. I think 20/29 episodes are what happened in 2016. Then we jump to their adult life in episodes 21+. They get together in the middle but broke up and reunited again.

I wouldn't call it completely unnecessary. How else would we have gotten the scene of Zhou Wan being jealous he was dating during their break or how he explained how hurt he was and only said yes to the date because he was angry. But i agree it didnt add much plot wise. Its just for the fun scenes

I'm glad they kept that part short and and i think they added it to match the novel. Before meeting Zhou wan he was a notorious play boy who cycled through girlfriends every month, he was very popular and girls were always asking him out. Of course he never really liked any of them though

While JY did go through a lot, ZW doesn't owe him anything. She had always considered him as just a friend but he still didn't get the hint to stop pursing her even during their adult years. She treated him as good as a normal friend would though I wouldn't call them best friends haha

I'm starting to read the novel now since I'm still waiting for new episodes. I must say the leads are a perfect cast based on how the characters were described in the novel like I can't imagine anyone else for the role. I'm glad i saw the drama first since I can imagine all the characters and scenarios. I'm glad they changed Lu Xixiao's character in the drama though, I would be so turned off by novel version of him just based on how bipolar he was and the smoking... drama lu xixiao is chefs kiss bestest boy.
