I think I am one of the few odd one outs because I did not enjoy the drama as much. Yes, the quality is okay--not…
This is a B-grade drama pretending to be A-grade with its lavish production value (partly b/c a movie version is being/was made out of it). It also suffers from the half-arse syndrome, meaning they knew a movie was going to be released so they decided to half-arse the drama version. Think of the TV version as a teaser to the movie, if you will.
BTW, don't trust the ratings on this site. The REAL ratings of 3L3W drama should be like this:
Ok guys is it just me but Su Su created alot of the problems...i am really getting itritated. Could she just once…
P.S: Beware of ppl who attack others for their own personal agenda. Especially, when they seem to be posting here 24/7 in every single "thread". My guess, probably ppl paid to sweet talk a series esp as the movie version is approaching.
Ok guys is it just me but Su Su created alot of the problems...i am really getting itritated. Could she just once…
Welcome to the world of MELODRAMA. By definition it is exactly that, over-exaggerations needlessly done. Just keep in mind though (and ignore others opinions) this is a B grade drama just very well done/presented. Some viewers are blinded by this fact, some viewers more perceptive and are annoyed by it...
Ye, who complained there is nothing to watch after 3L3W, read this: 1. Have ye checked out the top rated dramas…
The same way most ppl felt about episode 20 of NiF, I felt the same about 3L3W, until YH got his arm knawed off. That didn't happen until the third act, did it not?
BTW, ppl liking 3L3W are weird. I was completely hooked when Mei Changsu appeared on a tiny boat blowing flute... In the first ep. 3L3W only managed to hook me after YH lost an arm RoCH style! But RoCH went so much further exploring the one-arm character's character. Ppl just quickly ignored YH had lost an arm after the fact.
Oh, and BTW, at the national level, NiF is regarded as a highly revered work in China. Can't say the same for 3L3W/EL:

After winning many hearts in China and around the world, the original novel for the popular Chinese TV series Nirvana in Fire has received China's top copyright award of 2016.
Issued by the National Copyright Administration (NCAC), the Copyright Awards 2016 also came to several literature and TV works such as film Wolf Totem, and Renowned Chinese lexicographer Lu Gusun's The English-Chinese Dictionary published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House.
According to NCAC, these works are awarded for their creative spirit and positive content valuable for promotion. They also hold creditable social and economic impact with a certain market share and have helped promote economic development.
Along with several other media companies, the Foreign Languages Press and Tencent were also awarded for their promotion of creative works of copyrights and the copyright industry as a whole.
The copyright award on protection was given to several companies as well as several government bodies including anti-piracy department of Chongqing Public Security Bureau, while the award on management came to a media company and several government bodies to reward their law enforcement on copyright management, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
The NCAC, in cooperation with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), began to grant copyright award in 2008.

Indeed, I wholeheartedly agree that NiF is "badass" in its own right. NiF is Shakespearean level storytelling. That's why it deserved a tragic ending like all works of Shakespeare. To me 3L3W just felt like a cheap knock-off of Return of the Condor Heroes. What disappointed me the most about 3L3W was the fights. The duel between MY and YG in ep 01 was generally excellent but degenerated quickly to a level of mediocrity after that. Especially the final duel between YH and Big Bad, it felt like the director and choreographer didn't even try...
Anyways I also wrote this about 3L3W on another forum:
Anyone wants a good example of bad modern lighting just go have a look at Three Lives, Three Worlds, it's so bright and diffuse the picture looks yucky...
Lastly, don't even get me started on rage quitting a drama like 3L3W. If u look at me review, I actually dropped this drama at ep35, but resumed b/c of outrageous persuasion by posters like Krystalsoojungs.

It's not that I have somethings against 3L3W. As a standalone drama it was well done, but d/t its occasional cheesiness, when u put it next to the original work that is Return of the Condor Heroes, or even Nirvana in Fire, it don't hold a candle to either of them. Don't even know why NiF only got 9.2 when 3L3W got 9.1 rating. IMO it should be rated at least 18.0/10 if we use 3L3W's scale! NiF and 3L3W are leagues apart in terms of story, fight scenes, and overall quality!

Indeed, the overarching story structure is derived from Condor Heroes. The alternate names = Condor Lovers = The Divine Couple (you know dealing with gods and deities and such). BUT Condor Heroes doesn't really have palace drama, that's why 3L3W drew inspiration from Nirvana in Fire when it came to the Heavenly Palace aspects!
BUT the most important thing about 3L3W was the undying love between YH and BQ across three lives. Alas, this was the main theme of Condor Heroes Return = Legend of the Condor Lovers (the undying devotion between Yang Guo and the Dragon Lady who is 5 years his senior)
Ye, who complained there is nothing to watch after 3L3W, read this:
1. Have ye checked out the top rated dramas on this site? In terms of C-dramas, there are only two rated +9.0 in the top list (of this site): Nirvana in Fire (9.2) and 3L3W (9.1)
2. 3L3W actually borrowed some stuff from Nirvana in Fire (helping the most benign Prince to become the King instead of the scheming/plotting one, using a seductive drug on a royalty figure, scheming Imperial Consort getting demoted (ie. Sujin), etc.)
The way Yehua didn't fall for any of Su Jin's tricks is what made him one of the best male leads ever!…
Notice Mo Yuan was using "The Force" in episode 01? That's b/c the concept originated in Hong Kong by the aforementioned author of Return of the Condor Heroes (1961) from whose work was derived Three Lives, Three Worlds, not Hollywood!
The way Yehua didn't fall for any of Su Jin's tricks is what made him one of the best male leads ever!…
That is b/c Ye Hua is based on Condor Trilogy character Yang Guo, a very intelligent and cunning individual.
Anyways if anyone cared to read my few previous comments, this work and STAR WARS prequel trilogy were both derived from a work first published in 1961 in Hong Kong called Return of the Condor Heroes. This work made its way to the West in the form of STAR WARS b/c Hong Kong was under Western rule until it was handed back to China in the late 1990's. So, Westerners being very exploitive, especially within an area under their control managed to adapt Condor Heroes wielding lightsabers instead of metal swords... But the underlying story is essentially the same: Father turns evil, effectively dies before son is born, son redeems the father ('s past misdeeds and hence his tainted character), etc. The further proof is that instead of featuring a Giant Condor in the story, STAR WARS has that infamous (M.) Falcon in its stead. Regardless of Condor or Falcon, they're both giant birds...
She suckered them into the expedition in the first place by lying about her dad just to cure her curse. The symbol on her scapula looked different at the end, so she somehow cured it by transferring it to the guys.
In the end, two greedy guys got tricked by a woman, ended up with the money in exchange for the curse???? In the end, she paid only $40k (probably only peanuts to her) to have the curse removed from her... And the guys got what they deserved cuz all they ever talked about was the money???
Way to overrated. I have spent 12 ep trying to get into this show but I can't even make it through ep 12…
Btw, don't mind my ramblings. I did really enjoyed the show though, partly b/c the show is structured like this: 3 episodes where jack happens, then another one or two that will have you at the edge of your dramatic seat, then another 3 more annoying episodes with red fox girl in it. Rinse & repeat.
Way to overrated. I have spent 12 ep trying to get into this show but I can't even make it through ep 12…
Expect more of the same throughout the entire 58 episodes. Ppl are attracted to the series b/c of the overall visual presentation and good acting, not the dragginess nor underlying story nor overtly melodramatic romantic tensions and misunderstandings...
i just finished watching this drama and im speechless now.. this is the first drama that i watched without skipping…
I watched up to Ep 58 with 12 minutes left. Will resume tomorrow. I don't get viewers like the above comment. To me Three Lives Three Worlds is nothing spectacular. Just a very well done drama overtly filled with MELODRAMA. I can't feel for any of the characters, not even BQ b/c of this... some scenes were actually cringe-worthy as I recall them.
In other words this is the most overrated melodramtic series I've watched in the last 12 months!
Guys, Three Lives Three Worlds is just a cleverly disguised Return of the Condor Heroes. I don't recommend any of the live action ones. China hasn't produced a good one yet. The version I do recommend is the anime version renamed to Legend of the Condor Heroes that can be found on anime.thehylia.com under 'L' and the 1st season was actually animated in Japan...
When watching anime LOCH, just keep in mind these correlations:
Ye Hua = Yang Guo
Mo Yuan = Yang Hong (Yang Guo's dad, the son looks similar to his father)
Bai Qian = The Dragon Lady (she's much older than Yang Guo, eventually marries him)
Yang Guo actually lost an arm in season 2 exactly like Ye Hua
Kunlun mountain = Quanzhen Sect's mountainous temple
Jade Purity fan = Mongolian Prince's fan
Zhe Yan the Old Phoenix = the Giant Condor that saved Yang Guo right after losing arm
Heavenly Lord (current) = leader Guo Jing
Xuan Nu = The Dragon Lady's 'sister'
Su Jin = a mix of Huang Rong (the cunning mom) and Guo Fu (the spoiled daughter)
Big Bad = the Golden Wheel Monk
Etc.
(P.S.: In case you didn't know STAR WARS Ep I-III drew inspiration from LOCH: Older woman marrying younger man, they met when he was a boy, hero losing arm, etc. LOCH was published in 1961, so you know who had plenty of time to know about it n draw inspiration from it)
I haven't watched Return of the Condor heroes so dunno what you are talking about. But Eternal Love I reckon…
Hold on a minute. I don't reccomend any live action Return of the Condor Heroes. None of them are any good. The one I recommend is the anime version renamed to Legend of the Condor Heroes. It can be found on anime.thehylia.com and the 1st season was actually animated in Japan.
Yawn. I'm not a fast forward person. I usually watch the episodes as the production team wanted me to watch, that is not ff thru a single scene. DJ+FJ romance got so annoying I literally dropped the show at episode 46 am not thinking of going back to it ever...
The truth hurts doesn't it? Especially for blind fan boys.

Nirvana in Fire 9.5/10
Fighter of Destiny 9.3/10
3L3W (aka EL) 7.0/10

The difficult part is getting the video. Doesn't matter if the vid is subbed or not cuz subscene will fill that void.
