That conversation kinda shows how green LSS is about life at that point, when she prods him about how everything that has been done to him would easily lead him to take revenge and kill. I think LSS thinks being evil is simply innate in him, and she must have been surprised to learn he doesn't feel anything like that at all, and that he was simply resigned to suffer because people can't be changed even if he wanted them to treat him better.
Hence her realization that evil is not necessarily born, it's made by people not caring, and that if only someone would take pity on him and show him kindness, maybe he wouldn't turn into DG after all.
