The viewership/rating is only based on the Korean audience, the ones tuning in on their TVs. So that says a lot already. It's them deciding the ratings. Global audience is another thing. But both are enjoying it. Different times will change people's taste in things.
Plot may be nothing new, but in this day and age, people seem to resonate with it a lot, hence they're watching it. Drama plots need not be groundbreaking for people to enjoy it. Plus, it's more of a slice-of-life genre so some people can relate. And yeah, big factor also is KSH and KJW's chemistry clicked, so there you go ~
