That's the whole point of XL's character. He will never say what's on his mind. To understand his thoughts, you have to look at his actions, his expressions, his gestures (which TJC is doing so wonderfully, btw).
He was relieved to know that Xiao Yao is not scared of him literally but of the fact that she might fall for him, emphasizing that he's not the typical man a woman should be dreaming/fantasizing about. But also at the same time, making him realize that she would never be the right choice for her if ever that happens. Remember he said, "What if I'm too gentle and considerate to you and accidentally enter your dream, making your life worse than death?" By being mean to her is him making sure her fear will never come to fruition. His "violence", if I could call it that, is a wall he builds for himself.
Of course i mean dude the way he shows his love is quite scary..😅 maybe to him violence is a form of love😅

Not a love interest, but so far, Xuan for me as well. He carries that anti-hero role phenomenally. His acting range is at a high-level. Xiang Liu comes second coz I like the vast difference between the actor himself and the role he's playing as now he'll be portraying two different personalities.

Zhang Wan Yi's character, Xuan, is the main lead. But this is the case of, he's the ML but not necessarily the romantic love interest of the FL.
You might give it a try and see for yourself if it's to your liking. It's all a matter of personal preference after all, no matter how many people will tell you to watch it or not ~
Idk if it was just me, but when I was watching Ep. 18, esp. that last scene with XL, I suddenly teared up a bit. I didn't realize I was so engrossed in the drama that I felt that. I guess coz the whole episode was smooth sailing and then suddenly I didn't expect to see XL feeling betrayed at the end and the episode ends that way.
Besides the acting and plot, the BGMs and OSTs are giving me all the feels in this drama. Every BGM is perfect for every scene (─‿‿─)
