Xianxia now feels like there is one master template, and you just pick out the bits you want, slap them together, call it a day, and rely on the cast to do the heavy lifting if they can.

I agree with you. People seem to react to an 'overrated' comment as if you're saying a drama they like is worse than dog shit. I enjoyed this, nice performances, good chemistry. However, it was very predictable, and I like my politics with more subtelty and cleverness. This was a bit too "I'm power hungry and I'm goimg to do bad stuff for power, power, power, and I'm also goimg to tell everyone about it." I like smart, morally grey villians. This was very basic, politically, but it was a nice romance, and I think people who are rating it super high are people who don't really enjoy political historical dramas. I'm
