My guess is that Netflix probably pushed him to add that scene at the end to build up hype for the American version that by the sound of it is going to become a reality at some point in the future. If i remember correctly initially he wanted season 1 to be a standalone but did have ideas for season 2 if it came to fruition but with how ridiculously popular it got, him and Netflix really didn't have a choice but to continue

Title Squid Game Season 3 Spoiler

About the American Squid Game, director Hwang Dong Hyuk said pretty firmly, "There is no basis at all. I have never heard of it officially. I don't know how much of it is true." He also mentioned the rumors that spread online that the American version will be filming in December and that he would directly participate in the production but it wasn't clarified in the article if he knows about it or will be involved in any way.

It’s been reported by multiple outlets that an American Squid Game series has been pitched by David Fincher but little has been officially confirmed about the potential U.S. spinoff or even if Cate Blanchett will be involved moving forward. Also The Hollywood Reporter said that sources have told them that Cate Blanchett’s cameo in the final scene of Season 3 is not currently intended to set up any future storylines “at this time.” But with Fincher and Blanchett’s previous connection, it’s possible that could change in the future since they previously worked together.

Hwang Dong Hyuk said this also “I think the story ended in a manner where it doesn’t need a further story to be told. So I am not too interested in telling a story that continues on from the conclusion,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “If I were to do a spinoff someday, I think I would rather choose to go back and see what happened during that time gap [between seasons one and two]. But this is something that we are just tossing around, so as for when or how a spinoff might come about, it’s still up in the air.”

He also shared a similar idea with Entertainment Weekly, suggesting that the spinoff could take place during the period when “Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters” of Squid Game. “There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that,” he continued.

As of June 2025, sources have told Variety that Netflix currently has no plans to announce a Squid Game spinoff. However, due to the addition of Cate Blanchett in the final scene and the success of the main series, “Netflix is considering next steps for the IP.”

For me it wasn't bad but it also wasn't great, just meh. The ending and really the whole last episode was pretty frustrating with the story that they were building towards since season 1 becoming kinda pointless. Jun Ho ending up being pretty useless after season 1 and Gi Hun put all that effort to try to take down the game for him to literally achieve nothing, In Ho will remember him for a long while i'd imagine but will it really even matter if the games keep going on and nothing changed other than a little rebelling? I get that taking down the Frontman, guards, creators, etc. was pretty much impossible from the start because they were completely overmatched in every aspect but why even make it a possibility for the players and Jun Ho in the first place if it just ends like that?

Cha Tae Hyun will be returning for season 2 it appears! On KBS CoolFM's 'Park Myung-soo's Radio Show he said: “As far as I know, we are preparing hard with the goal of starting filming early next year,” and added, “As you know, I am a lightning man, and back then, I only had a little bit of static electricity. I don’t know how much electricity (Kang) Pool-hyung will give me this time, but I hope he gives me a lot of electricity.”

Filming will begin early next year as reported a few months ago when it was said they were aiming to start filming by March of 2026 after starting pre-production back in May

About Go Min Si, her agency, Mystic Story, said the following on why she decided to decline: "It is true that Go Min Si has decided not to appear," and "We decided that it would be better to first resolve the school violence issue rather than pushing ahead with filming while it has not been completely resolved, so we decided to step down after amicable discussions with the production team." ;(
