Completely hooked and addicted to this drama! I'm now for episode 14 waiting to see how would end the story, At the present so impressed with the plot and moved with the romantic story between them. I remember when this drama was on air I didn't give much attention. It didn't have a main cast that appealed me specially and it wasn't advertised enough to even try. I thought "another time-travel" as the previous year already aired several dramas with this theme "Faith", "Rooftop Prince", "Time Slip Dr Jin" and "Queen In Hyun's Man". But I'm glad that I took the plunge to start it since I felt curious to watch other Lee Jin Wook's drama after seeing him in the new "The Three Musketeers".
This is my first drama starring Eric Mun. I really liked his character, so sexy and cute. I had lots of laughs. I saw Jung Yu Mi before in "I need romance 2" and I like her very much in this drama too. I think she fits quite well in more mature roles. The cast for this drama is brilliant. I was so excited with Sung Joon in "I need romance 3", so if I was the lead actress I'm sure I would have a hard time in deciding which guy to choose. The style in this drama reminds me so much the sort "I need romance" or "12 men in a year".
Is this really that bad or should I still watch it? I am not that picky but I would still prefer to know what…
I liked very much the beginning of this drama and still has really good scenes maybe the first 7/8 episodes. If you are fan of Yan Aaron I would recommend to watch at least the start of the story but I doubt you would get to the end. I rarely drop a drama in which I fond of the main actor, but it took much patience to digest the 20 episodes in this one. "Love Buffet" or "Just You" there are far much better romantic dramas starring him. I would also recommend you "Gloomy salad days" that is quite different and original although Aaron have more presence in the last episodes of the drama.
It's a shame that a drama which started with a really good setting, with lots of romance and cuteness, interesting double personality and twisted love story with very exciting scenes with Yan Aaron, suddenly became the worst nightmare ever!
I've never been so happy about a drama coming to an end. <3 Who's with me?
Yes, you're right! It was a real torture the eternal waiting to an end that I didn't even expected to save the terrible mess in this drama. At least I got it right in that, the end was as bad as the development of the plot after the first 7/8 episodes.
There are same spoilers about "Secret Love Affair", "Warrior Baek Dong Soo", "Channel-X", and "Inspiring Generation"
I totally agree with this article. From "Faith" and "The Winter, The Wind Blows", both quite slow indeed, I enjoyed more the second one (TWTWB) because Jo In Sung's character was more appealing for me than Min Ho's one.
I must say that there have been dramas as these here, dragging almost from the beginning (normally the first or few episodes might be good trying to hook viewers) and drastically change at the end or from the middle. The recent "Secret Love Affair" is an example. It started quite exciting and thrilling, became really boring after a few episodes and all interest came back at the end. I would put in this list too theTaiwanese drama "Channel-X", in which the only reason that made me avoid to drop it was the good looks of Cheng.
However there are cases of dramas starting and developing quite well but dragging from the second half and only recuperate some interest in the last two episodes or not even so and ending with a huge disappointment. For example, "Warrior Baek Dong Soo" although is a really good drama, for me was really dragging at some point, with a few good twists at the end but not enough to save the thing. But the winner of all deceptions in 2014 until now I think goes for "Inspiring Generation". I was looking forward for this drama that started really well and was quite a fresh air among over exploited plots and clichés but it turned a drag on without end and finished...I'm still thinking how I did to finish watching this one, really.
Romantic comedy is one of my favourite genres out there, so I enjoyed reading this article. I haven't watched all titles listed here but from the ones I did, these are my favourites:
- "ISWAK" & "TKA" are undeniable choices. I agree in that are the best of all versions. I always was reluctant to watch this version because I was more fond of Korean or Japanese dramas and actors. It surprised me how much I became fan of Joe Cheng after watching them. Ariel Lin also is really good at this sort of dramas with so many funny sequences.
- "Coffee Prince" is without doubt one of those among the gender bender theme with best interpretation and good chemistry between the main couple highlighted with good comic scenes.
- "Queen In Hyun's Man" probably has one of the best romantic and sexiest kisses ever.
- About "A Gentleman's Dignity", I think is a well done drama but in this style I would choose others before this one.
- "Love Shuffle" is brilliant. It has everything: a good and original plot, hot guys, lots of laughs and cuteness. All well wrapped with a cool OST. One of the reasons that makes you love Japanese dramas.
So after my picks from these recommendations I would add some others I think deserve to be here:
- "Boys before flowers" probably is a classic and too over watched romantic comedy that many people might hate for different reasons but as for me that was my first Korean drama has very good memories and I loved the story and characters in it. I liked so much Koo Hye Sun interpretation in the main female lead despite of her being criticized for this role by fans of F4.
- About Korean romantic comedies I would add too "Protect the Boss","Lie to me" and "Flower boy ramyun shop". They make me laugh with pleasure and speeded my heartbeats easily with the good chemistry and sensuality between the lead actors.
- To finish I want to include some Taiwanese dramas that I found really cute and romantic: "In time with you" (that lovely tension between friendship and love), "Skip Beat!" (Chen Ivy is just so funny to watch) and two more dramas with the same love triangle - Yang Rainie /He Mike / Wang Kingone- "Why Why Love" and "Devil beside you". Rainie and Mike, they match so well together.
Here a vídeo with romantic scenes from the drama The Rose. It contents many key sequences that might spoil the plot for you. Better to watch after that, so you would enjoy of the best parts with Joe Cheng: http://youtu.be/dzOWgWCD2hQ
I am still watching this drama so I don't know if I would like the ending but I think is becoming quite predictable and it would make me sad enough. As other people commented, is based in a manga and that's is something that you would sense in the way the story and characters are presented. This fact can be something good or bad. I watched other drama adaptations from manga/anime with good results like Nodame Cantabile (Japanese drama) Skip Beat or Absolute boyfriend (Taiwanese dramas). However, as I haven't read the manga where The Rose come from, I cannot compare them. Even so, I find this drama really likeable and touching. The best of all Ella and Cheng characters (Bai He & Kui). It's true that there are some topics in this drama that not everyone would approve- like relationships that involve homosexual and incest desires, but that are frequently found in manga plots. I personally think these subjects are treated with great sensibility and innocence. Kui character is so beautiful that you easily feel his love wins over social taboos that constrains our understanding of what love should be like.
There are missing more titles in this guide. I watched also Love Actually where he is playing the role of a chef. He is quite handsome in this drama although the drama itself is lacking many things. As a curiosity, he partner here with Korean actress Lee Da Hae (Hotel King). I am finishing now the drama Channel-x where he is an anchorman involved in the mystery of a murder. Not the best drama either but he has very dramatic sequences that worth watch it. Cheng has taken part in other dramas too but as some people said, the highlight would be what he is doing now. At this time I am writing here has been released 3 episodes with subtitles of "You light Up my Star", his new work where he plays the role of a drama actor with some issues in his relationship and the stress of the showbiz world put in his private life. His character is really interesting and I expect a good rating from this drama for what I have watched until now. Next 4 and 5 episodes started to be subbed in viki channel.
I think the dramas you described in the article are the best he did. I wasn't very fond of the storyline in Flower boy ramyun shop but I love all the kisses scenes here, this is probably one of the most seductive roles he got. He did a wonderful job in the return of Iljimae with very touching romantic and sad sequences. And I agree about the charismatic character he played in 49 days, which has a very interesting plot. As for The moon that embraces the sun his relevance is less noticeable because he wasn't the main lead but he acted quite well his part. It is good to see with a variety of roles how flexible and adaptable Il Woo is in different registers. I think this shows his professionalism as an actor and that he is not just a pretty face.
I would like to comment my impression about the ending of this drama, so do not read if you haven't watched yet. It annoy me so much how the writer tied up the fate of the characters in the last episode. Come on! I have never felt so unjustified a death as that of Woon when he already has been forgotten and given a chance to being alive. I mean, the worst it wasn't his death itself but the reason why he has to die and about all who had that terrible idea, his childhood friend Yang Cho-Rip.This nonsense character, who had not much attention through all drama at the very last moment decide to sacrifice his friendship in the name of a noble cause? You must kidding me, and on top of that he not even die but instead he gets a girlfriend? I just wanted to kill him so badly. Bidan death in "Queen Seon Duk" drama wasn't as bad as the Yeo Woon here, at least was beautifully written, sad but with more sense. I think the writer had some serious breakdowns from time to time. like I have never seen a character with so many candidates to fulfil the role of father as Jin-Joo; or the joke of In death (the title hard to die fits him perfectly). Despite all said, the drama as a whole is nice to watch with really good fighting scenes and good dialogues. The best of this drama are all friendships between fighters. With so many good characters dying I wonder why they didn't kill that stupid Cho-Rip guy.

I love the intro for this drama. I really like Joe Cheng character here, I think would be a good chance to show up his acting skills. At the contrary of other people, I personally don't see exaggerated his reactions considering that he has some kind of disorder. People who suffer from acute stress can lead to mental illnesses and their reaction until normal circumstances are always overdone. He is interpreting quite well his role.
It would be a good story if they made a movie instead of a 12 episodes drama with so many flashbacks. Taking out the repetitive sequences and concentrating in the nice screen shots with a fixing in the simple and plain dialogues would improve it greatly. I would like that someone get the idea to make a movie version instead.
Honestly the best thing of this drama was the acting of Kang Ji Hwan which is never a let down. For what concerns…
I completely agree with you. The beginning of the drama was so good and interesting but then started to being so boring with the worst part about the love story. But as you say Kang Ji Hwan and Choi Daniels were great. I also preferred Jung So Min in the Lead.
I got a good impression of actress Go Sung Hee in Miss Korea, so I think it would be interesting see more of her acting. At the other side, Jung Il Woo is one of my favourite actors. He is so adaptable to different characters from more serious roles to comics ones, he definitely would not disappoint me. I hope my expectations would come true and I would enjoy of a good drama for the summer.
I think is really nice story about friendship and love. I gave high score to this drama because I enjoyed watching the development of the plot and how they complicate the situations and twist the outcome. This make you still wondering about what is going to happen next. However, to be fair, I can understand why other people didn't like that much this drama. The weak points I found were that : 1- Ending tooooo cheesy and unrealistic ( I don't want to enter in details to avoid spoil it); 2- Twists are good but too much is true as someone pointed out, it sounds unnatural (about all how easily people forgive serious betrayal and big lies); 3- Well, during the whole drama there were characters you really want to see being punished but miraculously they got off with a light scold and it seems the writer didn't want anybody in jail. I mean there were noticeable crimes related with disclosure of documents and secrets within the company, conspiracy and infringement of contracts and so on, that normally lead to a conviction even for the accomplices of the crime but the police might be on holiday because didn't made act of presence at all. Anyway, I would recommend for those who like romantic plots and fairy tales sort of stories.
Another frequent event is that characters meet in some circumstance before they are introduced each other in more formal settings despite of the city size. Although this actually happened to me in Seoul once, to being introduced to someone that came to live at the same place and we already met before and even danced together! I couldn't stop laughing, I felt like I was interpreting a Korean drama role in real life.
