I am copying some words from JayBL who already read the novel and knows more about it than we do. I saw a lot…
I don't think it's rushed because, even though I could read only the first 8 chapters, they included 98% of it plus some additional things. They are very faithful to the original novel. There are some 70 chapters in the book and they have almost 12 hours to adapt it - The Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy has 10 hours. On contrary, TharnType will have more screentime even though it's a much simpler story, with only a few characters, set in a contemporary era.
Moreover, Type spent most of episode 3 blushing (you can literally see Type's pink cheeks in the BJ aftermath in the shower and even later when he runs away in embrassment and hides under his blanket - it simply can't get any cuter than that) and with heart loudly beating (which I think was perfectly done , using those heightened sounds to make the audience perceive Type's reactions as much as possible.
I'm SPEECHLESS! That bathroom scene was the MOST PERFECT, MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER! And that's only the beginning. I don't know how I am I supposed to survive the whole week after the "Sleep with me" line in the preview?!!
Type is holding onto Tharn for dear life, as if he were his anchor, his lighthouse in the darkness. Until he gets a hold of himself and realizes what he’s been embracing so desperate just now. He recoils from shock and punches Tharn from fear. In that moment, Type resembles a feral animal that has just been fatally wounded and lashes out at everything in self-preservation instinct. He tries so hard to put on his usual mask of bravado, but not even his outbursts of denial and anger can hide his tears and vulnerability. The tears just keep flowing no matter how many times he wipes them away. It’s only after Tharn leaves that he completely falls apart, just like earlier. It really tells you a lot about Type - that he’s never sought help with the trauma, never went to therapy and he just isn’t the kind who ever would but he definitely needs someone to help him deal with it, someone he can trust and lean on. And there comes Tharn, rushing to his side for the second time in 24 hours.
I think that making the two scenes in which Type clings to Tharn follow so close after each other was truly brilliant because it reveals a lot of imporant information to the audience. First, that no matter how terribly he treats him, Tharn will always forgive Type and return to his side, leaving everything else behind and putting him before everything, including his own ego. It really sets the pattern for their future relationship.
Furthermore, it shows that be in his dreams or feverish hallucination, Type subconsciously considers Type as someone he can trust and rely on, someone with whom he associates safety; equivalent to the feeling a child has for his parents. It proves that Type never truly hated Tharn nor his touch, instead, he merely abhors what he represents in his mind.
Finally, while watching Tharn so lovingly and dotingly take care of Type, catering to his every need, you realize he’s been learning from his mistakes. Knowing his touch is unwanted, he respects Type’s wishes and is so achingly careful not to touch Type or expose his skin more than is absolutely necessary, taking great pains not to take advantage of his helpless state, handling him with care as if he were the most fragile of things. It’s only after Type reaches out to him himself that he gives in because it’s something Type needs and he has never been able to deny him anything since the beginning. I love how tender Tharn is with him and gently soothes his fears away, like you would with a little child, and keeps holding Type’s hand the whole time because Type doesn’t want to let go of him. You can really spot Tharn’s genuine concern over what must have happpened to Type in the past to cause him react and suffer like this.
I love your comments, you write everything I've thought about the series but didn't know how to express it myself…
Thank you! I keep rewatching the first two episodes all over again, literally counting down seconds until episode 3 airs! I love the drama so damn much, I've watched quite a few bl shows but TharnType The Series is truly something special and unique. There are so many layers and nuances and all the scenes are interconnected. There is always something happening on the screen, under the surface, beneath the words and it's a pleasure to dissect it.
I agree that the cast and crew have done incredible job in creating this brilliant story. I normally write these posts on my Tumblr blog but I've decided to support the show and the love for it everywhere I can. Plus, I think that there is a lot of people here whole love the show and I enjoy to read their comments, except, of course, for those few written by a couple of haters but those are everywhere.
Type is still that little boy, held captive in the darkness. His nightmares are a real; they are a living memory that keeps haunting him. He looks so lost and tormented and it’s apparent that he never came to terms with what happened to him. The whole experience is like a hidden wound which festered over the years. Tharn isn’t the cause; he is only the final trigger because Type never truly recovered. He might have tried to keep everything buried but it kept coming back no matter how much he tried to keep it at bay. From Type’s reaction (”I’m not afraid of a nightmare.”), it’s clear that this isn’t the first time it happened. The trauma merely stayed latent over the years and the proximity of a gay person brought it from slumber, as if it were a hidden disease, lurking and bidding its time to reappear in its ugliest, most lethal form. After bottling it up the whole time, the past finally catches up with Type and it’s as if a dam broke. It has a hold over him and it’s driving his actions.
The most heartwrenching aspect of watching Type suffer from the nightmare is that while awake he’s so opposed to show any sort of weakness or asks for help (be it from Tharn or his friend Techno, even when seriously ill), but now, his true emotions come forth completely unchecked and without any filters. And suddenly, he can’t help but desperately, heartbreakingly beg for help. It’s literally a desperate cry for help because he’s just re-living the worst memory of his life and his agony stems from the fact that when he most needed someone to save him, no one came no matter how much he begged and pleaded; he was left alone and hurting.
Type took the whole experience as a lesson that there is no point to rely on other people because no one will ever help him and other people will only disappoint him so he decided to rely only on himself alone, wanting to be self-sufficient enough to manage everything on his own and never having to beg again. However, he’s been deluding himself because in reality Type wants to be saved, he wants someone to come and stop all the torment and pain. However, until now, it was difficult for anyone to come because he’s been keeping everyone at arms’ length, pushing them away. No one cared enough to try. Until his roommate. Until Tharn who never went away, no matter how hard Type tried to drive him away. He has just keept coming back. And he comes again once more.
It’s so deeply symbolic that Type is suffering in the darkness, just like his younger self in his memory, and then Tharn comes in, bringing with him both the literal and figurative light and giving Type the sense of safety in his arms. All it takes is Type’s desperate cries and tears and Tharn forgives him everything and the moment he hears his name from Type’s lips he’s ready to protect him from anyone and anything.
By the time Tharn catches Type masturbating, being the sucker for punishment he is, he has basically resigned himself to Type’s harassment, going that far that he even indulges and humours his angry tirades, but the moment Type badmouthes his father, he loses it. The scenes shares similarities with what happened between them at the end of the first episode, including the complexity of the whole experience, but, as with the rest of the drama, the devil is really in the detail and it’s important to notice these differences because they add nuances to the story and move it foward.
Both situations start the same - it’s about Tharn teaching Type a lesson for going one step too far. He is truly livid until the moment he hears Type’s pleas and notices his frightened eyes and fumbling, tense hands on his shirt, realizing Type is genuinely afraid of him, afraid that he would physically hurt him. Something in Tharn changes then, all the anger goes immediately away and his gaze grows softer. Thinking Type is sexually frustrated, Tharn decides to help him release. And then, just like the other night, he loses the grip on his control, letting his emotions overwhelm him for a second, and gets aroused again. His tightly shut eyes and the way he slowly caresses Type’s nose with his, as if he wanted to inhale him, give him away. (I really like these little snippets which show how much Tharn struggles to keep his longing for Type in check, making the audience realize how much it must cost him to live with Type but never being able to truly be with him.)
However, before Tharn can reach Type’s crotch, he notices that the person under him isn’t trembling in pleasure but in fear, a fear of being physically intimate with him, and stops at once. He becomes concerned for Type, caressing his cheek soothingly, giving him an inquisite look and asking what’s wrong. And that’s when Type finally gets a grip on himself and pushes Tharn away. And when he tells Tharn that he hates him, the desolate expression on Tharn’s face shows that those words hurt him more than if Type punched him.
This entire scene is immensely important because it gives Tharn the first huge clue that something is terribly wrong with the person he likes because begging and trembling in fear are out of Type’s character and that one word from Type and his sad eyes is all it takes for Tharn to stop.
I’m melting here. Those snacks have always been for Type, only for him, since the moment they first met. Moreover, now, Tharn also uses snacks as a form of apology for messing with Type the other night. He knows Type so well that he actually uses reverse psychology on him, writing that note for him NOT to eat them and even pretends that he is angry because he knows that his stubborn roommate would never accept it otherwise.
Meanwhile, it seems that Tharn has reached a new level of masochism - he even keeps Type’s angry post-it messages as keepsakes now. The boy has it bad.
The drama has done an amazing job in portraying the final scene between Tharn and Type at the end of the first episode. It doesn’t romanticize the encounter, in fact, it presents it as realistically and objectively as possible, using an almost documentary style of camera in order to give an unbiased view of the events, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusion. To achieve this, the director not only uses close-ups but employs natural sounds to heighten the perception of the experience and make it feel authentic. In most Asian dramas, these natural sounds are muted or drowned out by OST music and that’s a huge mistake because sounds are imporant; sounds add another layer and complexity to the events. You can hear the rustle of Tharn’s shirt and hair when Type touches them, the sounds of the mattress, of Tharn’s fingers and lips on Type’s body and, more imporantly, his moans and heavy breathing. It makes you realize that while Tharn might have started to kiss Type for revenge, as the immediate result of Type inviting his friends to their room, he gets carried away, slightly loses grip on his control and actually becomes aroused, spurred by Type’s unwitting touches. Moreover, it’s clear that Tharn’s initial intention was to give Type only a few hickeys on the neck and chest; however, after he gets carried away he can’t help himself and sprinkle more kisses on Type’s eyes, face and lips.
Further extra layer is provided by the instrumental music which hints that whatever is happening on screen isn’t right. Most dramas would completely destroy the complex atmosphere with a sung OST track but here the music director opts for a dramatic instrumental piece in a minor scale which indicates negative emotions and dark themes.
All these creative means are crucial in properly conveying the profound complexity and ambiguity of this scene. There is something undeniably sensual about that scene, just as there is something negative and blurred. It’s meant to give the audience mixed feelings, it’s supposed to make them feel uncomfortable, it’s supposed to make them think.
What sets TharnType The Series from other Thai BL dramas is it’s willingness to address these uncomfortable and negative aspects of relationships, be it Tharn kissing Type without his permission or Type’s hateful harrassment of him. Portraying them doesn’t diminish the quality of the drama, on the contrary, it elevates it above the rest of the genre.
It’s been such a heartbreaking episode for Tharn because it’s obvious that he’s liked Type for some time now, possibly from the moment they met. His every action speaks volumes about how much he cares for his stubborn roommate. Talking about their first meeting, it’s wonderfully portrayed on screen, with Type being painfully shy and Tharn so wonderfully nice and supportive; it felt almost dream-like. And then the story immediately follows with the scenes showing Type in that very same room, ruining it all and Tharn standing all forlorn in the midst of the wreckage, and thanks to the way these scenes were edited you feel a sense of loss that something beautiful and precious is just being broken and destroyed by Type’s actions.
To realize how much Tharn already likes Type, you only need to look at all those seemingly insignificant details and hidden gestures:
He is always buying snacks for Type to eat.
His confession in the dark
He is ready to forgive Type everything, all the bullying and harassement, and go back to being friends as if nothing happened; moreover, it’s him who asks for reconcilliation and always tries to talk some sense into Type, even though it would be so easy for him to use the evidence of the bullying to get Type kicked out of the dormitory and possibly even the university. However, that would mean parting with him.
His worried and grim expression when Type asks him whether he’s gay suggests that he’s been actually hiding his sexual orientation from Type the whole time, never trying wooing him nor hoping for any kind of reciprocation of his feelings with Type being straight. The whole time, it was enough for him to be Type’s friend and spend time with him, watching him from afar and resigning himself to a one-sided crush. When Type tells him that he hates gay, indirectly telling Tharn that he isn’t even allowed so little as to be near him, he looks as if he has just mortally wounded him. So Type’s bullying is basically the ultimate nightmare and tragedy for Tharn’s heart.
After everything he suffered at Type’s hands, all the demeaning and harrassement, Tharn still manages to look and smile at him so lovingly. It looks like the boy is the ultimate masochist.
no one is translating it on wattpad at the moment. Someone was translating it in Indonesian (snippets) but people…
Yes, some people are just imbeciles. And it's funny how it's always those people who claim to be tolerant and accepting of everyone and other's opinions are actually the most intolerant and biased of all.
I'm following Jay_BL on Twitter and she is still translating the novel but she works 6 days a week so she has very little time now.
Does anyone know where I can find novel version in wattpad?
Jay_BL has got the permission to translate the novel into English from MAME and translated the first 8 chapters therefore it's impossible for someone else to translate it without the translation being taken down. You can find it here: https://my.dek-d.com/JayBL_/writer/view.php?id=1943450
The first episode covered the introduction and most of the first 4 chapters so if they keep up this pace I think it's likely the drama will have at least 12 episodes or more.
There has been some criticism about the final scene of the first episode of TharnType The Series where Tharn kisses Type in his drunken state with people arguing that he’s committed an unforgivable transgression and that the drama is romanticizing a non-consensual physical act. From what I see it’s a very small but loud minority because most people on Twitter and Instagram are in love with the show. There are several problems with these arguments.
First is that they take Tharn’s kisses as an isolated incident without taking into account any context and circumstances leading up to it, claiming that whatever Type did to him previously is irrelevant in regard to Tharn’s kissing him. And that is so wrong because if Type didn’t bully and provoke him, Tharn would have never done something like that.
Second problem, and perhaps most glaring and telling, is that while there is some harsh backlash of Tharn’s actions barely anyone condemns Type’s treatment of his roommate. Why? Because Type has heartwrenching trauma and fear, whch stems from a tragic experience driving, his actions? Yes, he has a serious reason, which definitely counts as a mitigating circumstance, but doesn’t excuse him of harrassing an innocent person who has never hurt him and always treated him with every respect he deserved. In this case, Tharn is the victim suffering for something he didn’t do. Most of the negative comments I read bash Tharn for kissing Type without his consent; however, ironically, no one mentions the lack of Tharn’s consent when Type bullied and harrassed him, destroying his precious possessions, called him deragatory, vulgar and demeaning names, disrupted his life, never leaving him in peace… - those are all the definitions of a hate crime. And judging from the preview, Type isn’t going to stop, demeaning Tharn’s parent and actually physically assaulting him. So whose offense has been objectively more serious? Type’s stolen kisses or actual hate crime and offense against basic human rights? The latter would be subjected to criminal proceedings in court while very few lawyers would dare to go to court over few stolen kisses. Criticizing one wrongdoing and disregarding the bigger problem and taking it completely out of context show huge double standards and a very narrow-minded POV.
I also read arguments saying that the kiss was stupid of Tharn since he knew Type hated gays and something like that would not improve ths situation. The thing is that at this point Tharn isn’t doing it because he wants to make Type to like him or make him less angry, he only wants to give him a hickey to mess with him for all the bullying. Moreover, when he kisses him Type he doesn’t know the reason for his aversion towards gay people because if he did, it’s obviously he would have never chosen a hickey as a payback method and opted for something else. People are so fixated on those few stolen kisses that they completely forget all the other things Tharn did and the things he didn’t do; they forget that he too has been suffering since the moment Type started his bigotic campaign against him. What’s important to realize is that Tharn only retaliates when Type harresses him and he constantly makes attempts to make up with Type, always ready to forgive and that really shows his true quality and how mature he is. He could have done much worse. He even has tangible proof and witnesses and could easily drive Type not only out of dormitories but also get him kicked out of school, yet he only repays Type using the same measures and it’s only right as he is standing up for himself since giving up would mean admiting he’s done something wrong and denying who he is. It’s only natural for Tharn to feel wronged and after weeks of constant harressment and neverending torment it’s only natural he finally snaps because a person can only take so much mistreament before he’s had enough.
Tharn and Type are hurting each other and there is a huge conflict between them, with a misunderstanding and emotional baggage at the center of it. They are not perfect, they both make mistakes and that what makes them human because real people and their relationships are flawed, imperfect, messy and problematic with many misunderstandings. However, they can also admit to their mistakes, learn from them, apologize and forgive each other. You can imagine a person reacting in real life like Type did and you can also see another person react like Tharn if treated the same way because even the most patient and tolerant people have their limits. Yet, neither of them did something truly unforgivable, moreover forgiveness is not an equal exchange or something you receive only when you deserve it. Just look how Tharn is always ready to forgive Type for his mistreament of him.
Some people are judging the characters by some impossible standards of human perfection that doesn’t even exist in the real world. The characters and relationships in TharnType The Series are not picture-perfect, just like they are not in the real world. If people want picture-perfect and “unproblematic” faves then perhaps watching another drama, like 2Moons2 or The Theory of Love, would be a better option for them.
