Not to be that person but it's not a spin off but just some cute moments. As you can see some of the little episodes…
If the production company and TV station call it a "spin-off" (which they do), it is a spin-off and it should be considered as such. And as such, it is a complete failure of storytelling. If you have some braincells, you should be able to understand the logic. It's not about what you pesonally believe but about the facts.
Not only is the ending of Mr. Queen terrible narratively, it’s also extremely twisted and dark. So Yong and Cheoljong are smiling at each other in the sunset, it might seem idyllic, but under the surface, their relationship is twisted beyond repair.
The whole story started with an innocent case of mistaken identities and ended up with a case of sick and toxic case of mistaken identities. Suddenly there is a relationship in which So Yong knows her husband fell in love with someone else and she is keeping it away from him, pretending it were her, fooling and manipulating him. That's one hell of an unhealthy relationship.
In the end, So Yong does to BH and CJ the exact same thing Hwa Jin did to CJ and her. I guess that it is a poetic and twisted revenge to fate?
Cheoljong might not have completely believed in his stories and everything he told him, but Bong Hwan had always been telling him the truth about himself since the beginning (first before their marriage and even later once they accepted what they felt for each other) - being a man and coming from the future - and had never tried to hide his real self, never adopted and stole So Yong’s personality. There was always complete sincerity and brutal honesty in the relationship between CJ and So Bong while with So Yong there are only lies and more lies.
Forget the whole homophobia aspect because this has to do less with sex/gender and more with the fact that there is a real person who ended up being used as a means to an end and then disregarded so the one who commited suicide and given up on her life, family and the man she presumedly loved after spending just a few minutes in his presence could gain everything she ever wanted, served on a silver platter, without doing nothing to deserve it. Because before Bong Hwan took over So Yong’s body she was not good enough and capable enough to get it on her own, with her own skills, and not even fight for it.
I’m not villifying SY’s character but, unfortunately, the way the writer brought her back in the final episode while having her being a non-entity in 99% of the story makes it seem that way - that somehow he ends up as in imposter in her own body.
I’ve watched The Bamboo Forest, Mr. Queen’s spinoff, and, damn, the writer has actually managed to make the story even a bigger mess than previously, if that’s even possible.
Apparently, So Yong and Cheoljong had met once before prior to her being selected as his queen in a fairtytale-like first encounter. That creates another additional problem of the drama - if you don't include such an extremely important crucial moment in your series and leave it out for some special spin-off episode your series is irrelevant and basically pointless. The series has some 20+ hours and they couldn't include that one scene? Why doesn't CJ remember that moment in the drama and in all of his flashbacks he only remembers the time BH was in charge of SY's body? Also, the meeting never appears in So Bong's flashbacks of So Yong's life either. Plus the spin-off got greenlit in the middle of the drama airing because of its success so it had never been originally planned to happen. So that one scene is an aritifical glued-in nonsense to justify the ending which the writer would have written just by the time the spin-off was announced because kdramas don't have completed script at the time when they began to film.
Moreover, when CJ was confessing his love to So Bong he was describing Bong Hwan's personality, not So Yong's, and not even once did he mention how he already loved her before but had to deny his feelings and supress them because she was from the Kim clan. That's an information you would expect to be included in such a confession. So Bong literally asks him why he loves the Queen and he never mentions their first meeting or her kindness.
Let me tell you something, if you Cheoljong had no problems killing "So Yong" after their fairytale-like meeting, he didn't really love her. The only reason he didn't kill her was because he ended up being distracted by Bong Hwan's strange reaction and Byeong In. These are not the eyes of a man who is torn because of his lingering feelings of love for the woman in front of him. There is no hesitation or regret, only cold determination to eliminate her if she proves to be a threat:
On the other hand, when Bong Hwan was in danger, he was willing to sacrifice his own life without a second thought.
Also, as I mentioned in my previous post, the whole drama was against the idea of love at first sight. Cheoljong fell in love with Hwa Jin gradually when they become reunited after he came back from exile and he fell in love with Bong Hwan gradually so in that regard it completely undermines another important message and theme the story had for the first 19 episodes, but, I guess, after the final episode there hasn’t been anything left to undermine.
So there are people who must have watched the entire drama while blind because they are trying to justify the mess by basically saying that SY had the same personality as BH WHEN THE FIRST 10 EPISODES WERE ALL ABOUT EVERYONE BEING IN SHOCK HOW SY IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM BEFORE. And there is this whole scene where So Bong, the person who has access to all SY's memories, says that he is a completely different person from SY and even Byeong In who knew SY the best confirms it. In his speech to BI, he admits that all his actions have been his own because SY doesn't have control over the body, proving it by firing the arrow at BI and hurting him because SY could never do that and if she had any sort of control over her body she would have prevented it. The fact that SY is hiding somewhere deep down inside SB's mind doesn't changed the fact that all the actions were BH's because she never had control over her body and the decisions the one being in control made. (Forget about that spinoff because it goes against everything that was shown in the 19 episodes.) All the flashbacks we see of SY in the drama show her as being completely different than BH too.
"19 perfect episodes and 1 lousy one" OR, you know, maybe it's time to acknowledge there were cracks in the storytelling…
Let's face it no drama is perfect. And Mr. Queen had its flaws. My own rating prior to the final episode was 8,5 and if the ending were decent I was going to keep it that way. It had its charm and overall was a good drama with amazing acting. But the ending just destroyed all of it. I'm just going to selectively forget the last episode happened because it would be a waste otherwise.
The drama started with an innocent case of mistaken identities and ended up with a case of sick and problematic case of mistaken identities. Suddenly there is a relationship in which So Yong knows her husband fell in love with someone else and she is keeping it away from him, pretending it were her. That's one hell of a twisted and harmful relationship.
i agree with you so much that i can give you limitless thumbs up, but seeing so many positive reviews about this…
Thank you! I saw the onslaught of positive and uncritical reviews as well and frankly I'm not even that surprised. What people want is a fairy tale. They don't care about reality, facts and logic. They want escapism and a couple driving into a sunset, which they got.
Frankly, I think ending like this is sick and very problematic because the drama started with an innocent case of mistaken identities and ended up with a case of sick and problematic case of mistaken identities. Suddenly there is a relationship in which So Yong knows her husband fell in love with someone else and she is keeping it away from him, pretending it were her. That's one hell of a twisted and harmful relationship.
I respect your opinion. However I believe she was there though out the journey though only came forward to express…
Do you really think a person needs a part of someone else's soul to become braver and better? Does the mere fact that someone else is a man make that person braver? Does being a man also mean being braver than women in general and that women are not as brave as their male counterparts? That's some extremely controversial opinion of yours but just like you respect mine, I respect yours.
Finally, if you claim that So Yong literally "needed" a part of Bong Hwan to become a better and and braver person, doesn't it also mean that without that part CJ wouldn't fall in love with his own wife and that So Yong on her own was simply not good enough to make him fall in love with her?
In my 15 years of watching kdramas I’ve seen some terrible endings but Mr. Queen has perhaps the worst and most unsatisfynig ending in the history of kdramaland. The series has been well-written and stellar throughout most of its run, developing its love story and characters well, but the final episode has ruined all of that which is such even a bigger pity because even the acting was sublime.
So Yong hasn’t been present aka being in charge of her body’s actions and reaction for 99% of the story. It’s been all Bong Hwan. Cheoljong didn’t fall in love with So Yong but Bong Hwan in her body. He literally admitted this to BH. That it was his temper, his character traits, including the bad ones, that made him fall in love with Bong Hwan in an epic love confession. Not once did he mention about her body, her beauty or her zither playing skills. So Yong “fell in love” with Cheoljong because of one meeting in their childhood and her father’s wishes that she should become a queen.
What I really appreciated about Mr. Queen was how they basically said “fuck the whole childhood love/love at first sight/first love trope” even with Hwa Jin and Cheoljong when he admitted that he liked her not because of the childhood meeting but because she became his friend later so it wasn’t a case of mistaken identities that developed his feelings for her. Thus, the only reason why Cheoljong could have had feelings for the real So Yong disappears. The fact that So Yong and Cheoljong have their happy ending in the very same place where he confessed his love for Bong Hwan is adding an insult to the injury.
And now, the final episode has ruined all of that development. BH accused Byeong In that he didn’t recognize that the Queen was no longer the So Yong he knew despite the fact that he claimed he loved her that much. So what about Cheoljong now? Wouldn’t it be illogical and hypocratical not to expect the same from him - that he should recognize that the Queen is no longer the same person? Even if for some reason (read: lazy writing and trying to having the cake and eating it too) So Yong adopted BH’s mannerism, there should still be major differences.
What about Bong Hwan and the trauma he is going to get after this? Previously, he used to be a person who couldn’t commit, who didn’t love anyone nor cared about anyone but himself. He fell in love with Cheoljong so much that he was willing to risk his life and sacrifice everything even though he knew that history had CH as the losing side. So losing that sort of connection after accepting his feelings, himself in female body and building a new life in the Joseon Era with a new family consisting of his friends and Cheoljong will most likely be devastating. Furthermore, he was expecting a child, a child he grew to love and that was also ripped away from him.
So Yong has commited suicide from her own will, she tried to escape her life and given up on herself, even though her circumstances were tragic, now she suddenly gains everything she ever wanted while Bong Hwan is left with nothing except for his job. What's the point of such plot?
In the end, such an ending is an utter narrative disaster and problematic in all sort of ways and that’s coming from me who rarely calls something problematic because nowadays the word “problematic” has become a synonym for what are basically normal and natural human flaws and imperfections. Overall, Mr. Queen was poised to become amazing but ended up an epic failure for the ages because of the final episode.
Wow TT is now officially over. I hope MewGulf have another project together in the future because S2 did them…
Even if it may differ from your opinion about the series and the rating on MDL (which is basically irrelevant because the whole system is non-transparent and very often aritificially changed), TharnType S2 has been extremely successful both in Thailand and internationally - it regularly was No1 or No2 most watched seires on LINE TV each week and on the Rakuten streaming service, which owns the licence in Japan, it has been the most watched show for the past 4 months straight. It might not be as successful as S1 but it's still extremely successful. It's MAME and the TharnType series which made Mew and Gulf succeed in the first place and gave them the opportunities that they have now.
This was TharnType the Series, not MewGulf the Series. MAME chose them to portray the characters she wrote years ago and there were very few changes in regard of TharnType plotlines from the novels so both actors very aware what they were signing on in the first place. People should realize that series are not about their "real life ships" but about the characters and stories and the writers create. All the TharnType novels are bestsellers in Thainland and have had a very high rating from the readers as well, years before Mew and Gulf was cast. The novels, just like the series, are primarily intented for Thai audience, which likes them immensely. The same goes for future project of Mew and Gulf.
Wait I just noticed that is labeled Rated R. Why? What about this would give it a R rating? The “love scene”…
The rating is according to the rating system in Thailand. It is much more strict than rating in the U.S or Europe. In Western countries, it would be rated PG-13 but in Thailand having these love scenes makes it R-rated. The official rating of both seasons in Thailand is R-rating and that's even when it's aired on television where all of those bed scenes are either completely removed or cut very short.
It's a cultural thing. Each country has different rating system for television/movies and Asian countries are more strict in this sense. Just look at kdramas most of them have the PG-15 rating but in the U.S or UK they would be either rated PG or just G.

The way to download it is either via an online Vimeo downloader website (just google it) or you can download a Vimeo downloader Chrome extention in which case, once you restart your Chrome and you visit the Vimeo website containing a video, there will appear a download button somewhere in the proximity of the video, depending on the extension you use.
If you have any problems, just ask me, I'll try to help :-)
That's not my complaint about this. My complaint is she lied that TT's wedding would be in the actual season.…
OMG, how old are you? 10? Judging from the information on your profile you are not which makes it even worse. It's you who doesn't know how the creative world works. The woman and her employees have headquarters in a container house. Who do you think is paying for the series? For the actors' and crew members' wages? For the computers and cars the actors are using in the show? Love of the fans?
It costs millions of bahts to make such a production. And there is no large production company behind it like in the case of 2gether that can afford to put full episodes on Youtube for free or Disney. TharnType is an independent production. A small portion of money comes from PP and Line TV but it's still only a small portion. The rest comes from licences on platforms such as Line TV, ONe31 or Rakuten; and the selling of the Special episode and Boxset.
MAME paid for the majority of the S1 costs, using almost all the money she earned from her books to produce it, to cast Mew and Gulf, and she ended up with a loss of almost one million baths after finishing the series. To produce series like TharnType, production companies don't have that amount of money at once so they need both investments from investors and to take loans from banks to foot the bill of the production. The locations, catering, cast and crew,... are all paid from these investments and loans. But the people who give these loans and investments expects their money to be returned and also get at least a few percents of profit. Because producing a show costing millions isn't charity.
Please, think before posting similar offensive and derogatory comments.

Yes, you need to be registered because the platform needs to identify you in order to know it's you who will be watching it after paying for it. I mean, it's good we cleared the misundertanding.
The link to the SP episode will be posted on the official Twitter account on February 13, 11 am (Bangkok Time). Just make sure to register on Vimeo beforehand. I bought the first special there and I had no problems. The only glitch was that literally thousands of people wanted to watch it in the very moment it was released so the Vimeo server naturally couldn't deal with such huge traffic at once. And as a result, I needed to wait 30-45 minutes to access the episode. That's not the fault of the production team but simply a consequence of such sudden one-time traffic. It may happen again, if so, don't panic and just wait.
Kinda funny how many people complain about a paid special episode after we got TWO seasons for FREE ?? You guys…
Finally someone with a realistic opinion about this!
If people don't have money to purchase something in other aspects of life they don't buy it either. Also, the series is intented for 18+ audience so there is a logical expectation that the audience has means to pay the price of two movie tickets for the special because 12,99 USD is approx. the price of 2 movie tickets, depending on where you live. It's nothing extremely expensive.
Nothing in this world is for free. Like you said, the production needs to be paid for - the cast, crew, catering, locations... Frankly, I get angry when people are complaining that they won't be getting the SP for free. They don't know the value of money. Imagine people refused to pay you for your work, demanding you do all the work for free. It's lovely fans love the series, the actors or that they want to see TharnType get married but love alone won't feed the actors, the writer, the director and all the other dozens of cast members who worked on it - if you want to show that love, you should show it by paying them for their work and hard effort.
I hate when people demand that the SP is something that should be available for free. The free viewing on Line TV for some international fans is a privilege, not a commonplace. For instance, Line TV is geoblocked in Japan because its TV series are licenced by Rakuten TV so the Japanese fans/audience have to pay for all the episodes of TharnType, including the SP. And they are not getting VPNs to overcome it or dissing the production about it. They pay for it because it's competely normal thing to do. Only few of them probably watch it illegally because S2 has been the most watched TV show on Rakuten each month and S1 has always been in TOP10 as well.
That's not my complaint about this. My complaint is she lied that TT's wedding would be in the actual season.…
They used the rings and wedding themes in the promos because since episode 1 a potential marriage between Tharn and Type is being discussed and Tharn is seen buying the rings and Type is seen wearing the ring in season 2. The word marriage does not appear in the title of season 2. The title of season 2 is "7 Years of Love", not "Wedding after 7 Years". It appears only in the title of the special. Regarding the wedding footage, the Season 1 preview included the footage from the first Special, too, so it's nothing new.
I have always expected the wedding to be in the special. Just look at my post from almost 3 months ago. Frankly, I don't get why so many people thought that the TharnType wedding would appear in S2.
I followed all of MAME's livestreams and interviews and never got any such implications out of them. Only that Thorn's wedding would be featured because they asked fans on Twitter to play extras at Thorn's wedding and told them that they would appear in S2.
The first special was also paid and the first season trailer also contained scenes from the special. There is no reason to be upset. It's the same practice and strategy that was used for S1 SP. So it's no foul play from the production team. Our Final Love SP also contained probably the most amazing TharnType moments - the bed scene, kitty ears, ocean kiss, ... The exact same procedure happened with S1 in every aspect.

All the information is on the official Twitter account. The production team posts remainders basically every day. I don't speak one word Thai and I still understand everything via Google Translate perfectly. https://twitter.com/TharnType_s/status/1355201411395448832

It's nothing extremely expensive, moreover, once you pay for it, the SP2 is forever yours, you can watch it all over again and even download it. English subtitles are available and the Vimeo platform is extremely user-friendly - you just need to register with email and pay. Simple. I purchased the S1 SP on Vimeo last year so I speak from personal experience.

And as for the rings, as I mentioned, they did appear multiple times in S2 and one of the main ongoing themes was the decision to get married.
