I understand the frustration but a thing I'd like to point out is because the killer playing with her head. She(mc) has been overthinking about it. Its like when you are seeing through your eyes, you see clearly but when you start to overthink about how you see, you start to see your nose and notice a huge blindspot. Same thing with breathing and every activity that we do.

this show wouldve been better if they just made them in to zombies and without the shaman or whatever
The monster that controls the mutants is intelligent. It knows that humans will barricade and protect themselves against mutants. For whatever unsaid reasons, it is looking for a suitable host which, we later find out, is the detective. So, it can't really turn every human into mutants. To control other humans, it needs someone influential like the shaman. Just my take though.
