Queen Woo draws parallel to British film Elizabeth (1998)

I was intrigued by Queen Woo after seeing two versions of the series on Viu - "Why is there a censored version?". Read article and viewers' opinion on the explicit content which further led me to watch this series. Glad that I did!

I understand if the series creator and writer wants to dramatise the tale of Queen Woo as this technique has been done in Hollywood many times. I don't understand the fuss about its historical inaccuracies - if viewers wants Queen Woo's story to be true to history, then they should search for documentary not a tv drama.

What I liked:
1) Plot - I don't watch Game of Thrones so can't comment on the similarities with that series. However when I watched Queen Woo, I got this Elizabeth (1998 British film starring Cate Blanchett) vibe. That character growth, dynamics with prime minister and stance on political marriage (or in Queen Woo's case, remarriage) in particular.
2) Queen Woo characterisation - Queen Woo started off as a chess piece in the kingdom of Goguryeo and the 5 tribes. It's great to see her character acquired certain skills (fight training, military strategy/analytical thinking) before the untimely death of the King and used those skills confidently to revamp the top management of her nation. Jeon Jong Seo was excellent as Queen Woo. Her emotions were expressed in her eyes, mouth and body posture.
3) Prime Minister Eul Pa So - What a compelling character! He was cunning even from episode 1 I was suspicious already! I was drawn to Kim Mu Yeol - he was magnetic on screen.
4) Dynamics - I enjoy watching different dynamics between King Gu and Queen Woo and between Queen Woo and Eul Pa So. Ji Chang Wook did great in expressing different feelings of King Gu for his Queen - the gentle gaze, soft smiles and later part, indifference and Queen Woo's reactions to those feelings. I also like the chemistry between Queen Woo and Eul Pa So. The battle of wits, either through military strategy discussion or chess games, seemed like foreplay between them. Though it is not implied, I would not be surprised if he is attracted to her. I want them to be romantically together!
5) Battle scenes - Those scenes were thrilling & done well - - good choreograph and amount of gore.
6) Supporting characters - I enjoyed watching these characters on screen: Moo Gul, Mo Chi, Woo Sun, Bal Gi, Mil Woo. They enrich the series with their intent, motivations and actions.

What I disliked:
1) Explicit sex and nudity scenes - I was bothered by the explicit sex and nudity scenes because I feel that most scenes were unnecessary. The only ones that add value to the storytelling are Woo Sun / Shaman Sa Bi / King Go Nam Moo (she was drugged which led to that fantasy) and Third Prince and his wife (she was forced/coerced to have sex with him and overall that scene just showed how vicious he was) .
2) Side characters - I find some side characters were overdeveloped (too much screentime) e.g. Yeon Bi while others were underdeveloped e.g. Crown Prince, the clan in black robes. I would love to see more backstory from those characters / clans so me / viewers understand the importance of that tribe to Queen Woo's alliance and eventual ruling.

Favourite scene:
When Queen Woo confronted her sister. I didn't expect it would go down in that manner.

Spicy & dark revenge tale that feels like a mini drama production

I am a fan of Wen Mo Yan and my last drama of hers is Everlasting Love, which I enjoyed. I was ecstatic to find out about her new drama yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot.

What I liked:
1. Revenge theme - There are so many revenge-themed dramas in the world of vertical dramas and I enjoyed this drama despite the familiar plot device. For once, I am delighted that green tea didn't get much screen time.
2. Acting - Great performance by Wen Mo Yan & Chen Ming Hao. I've only enjoyed 1 or 2 of her vertical drama - this one is added to the list. This is my first drama of Chen Ming Hao and I am keen to explore more. I felt that actor playing second male lead (SML) gave a good performance too
3. Romance - 🔥 Plenty of hot & heavy kisses. Good mix of love and lust. I was even hoping for some action by SML.
4. Editing - This drama felt more like a mini drama production because of the directing/framing of shots & tone. I am also grateful that Wen Mo Yan's voice is not dubbed.
5. Visuals - Damn, both ML & SML are very handsome. Wen Mo Yan is pretty, as usual.
6. Length - Running time of 100 minutes. Just perfect to watch after dinner but before bed.

What I disliked:
1. The ending - I kinda expect FL's action but ML's response baffled me. Why a cliffhanger?

Favourite scene
When FL remembered the most atrocious thing that happened to her in previous life - what an emotional punch to the heart!

ML was starved of love but learn to love and be loved with FL

I got to know about this drama through reddit. I was intrigued when I found out about the cast - I really liked Song Yu Jia's acting and Zuo Ming is fine in the 2 dramas of his that I've watched. This drama was unpredictable but I enjoyed it.

What I liked:
1. ML characterisation - This drama is uncomfortable to watch at times due to his early, toxic behaviour. As the story progressed, I saw the challenges that ML faced from childhood till present and I understood his behaviour. This is my first time watching Zuo Ming in a dramatic role and wow, he was believable. Well done to him!
2. Romance - He was starved of love and his methods of "love" were learned from observations of his parents' dysfunctional relationship. I liked that FL constantly reassured him and indirectly taught him about love. Their first intimacy was very hot - FL took initiative and once ML let go of his insecurity, the passion and lust flowed freely. They were an affectionate couple - physical touch is their love language.
3. Styling - Impeccable styling for both main characters. Song Yu Jia looked like a goddess while Zuo Ming was very handsome.
4. Vehicle - That pink jeep is so cool! It's great to see a vehicle other than black Mercedes/Maybach/Rolls Royce.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - Wow, what a complex arc. I was sympathetic with her because of the abuse she suffered at the hands of ML. However I hated her once I saw her true colours - she's the type who constantly craves attention from men. Devious and dangerous. That stakeholder meeting scene was ridiculous!
2. FL's back story - I felt that FL was underdeveloped. It was never stated whether ML was aware of FL's back story. If ML knew that FL existed for him, could his new beliefs on love remain steady?

Favourite scene
Their first intimate moment

Love watching Guo Yu Xin as a fashion designer in the 80s!

I was ecstatic to find Guo Yu Xin's new drama so soon after Spring Day. I watched this drama on the day of its release.

What I liked:
1. FL characterisation - There are several FLs who are fashion designers in the world of vertical dramas but I liked this one even more because I got to see her as a business owner as well. I loved that she talked about intellectual property. Guo Yu Xin was well cast in this role.
2. Reborn arc - I enjoyed the arc because it questioned me about the choices that we made. If we have knowledge about the future, should we use it to our advantage or do we just wait for things to happen?
3. Romance - Sweet romance and good kisses. I could sense their love for and dependence on each other. Guo Yu Xin and Su Jun He have great chemistry.
4. Styling - I love the bright clothes worn in the drama. Guo Yu Xin's cherry blouse was quick memorable but my favourite is the blue and orange business suit combo. So pretty! SFL wore nice clothes as well.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - SFL chose to take control of her fate after being reborn (yes, she was reborn too) but she was never accountable for her actions. She kept blaming FL whenever things didn't go according to her expectations. She was vicious in her means to bring down FL but I must say good job to the writer for writing such arc.
2. Genetic testing - I think that genetic testing that was done the second time was too advanced for that time. DNA testing was very new in the late 1980s and it was focused on crime solving. So I think DNA testing couldn't be use for parental dispute in 1989 yet especially outside of the UK/US/Germany.

Favourite scene
When FL introduced a new fashion trend outside of her store

There is a lot of beauty in quiet strength

What I liked:
1. Romance - This drama really focuses on the relationship between FL and ML. It is a slow burn but rich romance. They went into a marriage of convenience but I like how FL was open to affection and physical touch even though she was shy about kissing at first. I enjoy the chemistry (both acting & visual) between Guo Yu Xin and Chen Zheng Yang. There are at least 2 times that Guo Yu Xin’s ears turned red - was she cold or shy filming certain scenes with Chen Zheng Yang?
2. ML characterisation - I must say ML is the star of this drama. He is mature, emotionally stable and attentive to the needs of his partner. What I like most about him is his empathy. I was touched by his reaction when FL confided in him about a nasty encounter with her father’s acquaintance. They both sought comfort in each other. Chen Zheng Yang truly excelled in this role.
3. FL characterisation - There is a lot of beauty in quiet strength. She understands her self-worth, that’s an attribute I like about her. She cares for people who are genuinely concerned about her and if people treat her badly, then she gives similar kind of treatment to that group of people. Guo Yu Xin was great in portraying an intricate character.
4. Supporting characters - I love FL’s grandpa because he genuinely cares for FL. The actor was very good. ML’s assistant was a delight to watch as well.
5. Styling - I love the clothes worn by FL especially the traditional wedding dress. Exquisite beadwork. In this drama, Chen Zheng Yang wore a lot of wide leg pants and clunky shoes. I love seeing him in white suit because his outfit matched Guo Yu Xin’s white qipao.
6. Cinematography - Just beautiful!

What I disliked
1. Antagonist - Wow, FL’s father is a scumbag for treating his daughters as commodities. He even drugged his daughters and suitors to increase chances of marriage deals. Song Ziyan was petulant while Jiang Fei, his ex girlfriend was despicable.
2. Extras - There is a scene in which cleaners gossip about FL and ML. One cleaner wore stilettos which led to my surprise. Maybe extras could wear any shoes they wanted.

Favourite scene
ML’s reaction when FL confided in him about a nasty encounter with her father’s acquaintance

Who knew Li Ke Yi could do comedy. Refreshing storytelling!

I found this drama while perusing Zhao Zhen Dong's drama playlist on Youtube. I liked Li Ke Yi's recent dramas and based on youtube comments that I read, this drama had positive reviews. I watched this drama on flights to/from neighbouring country and I couldn't stop laughing especially the beginning part. I enjoyed this drama immensely because of its refreshing storytelling.

What I liked:
1. Comedy - This is one of the funniest dramas I have watched. Some scenes were absurd but damn there were hilarious!
2. FL characterisation - I loved that she's quick thinker. Very bright in her response to her love rival. She was smart to act like a damsel in distress but most important of all, FL was a genuine and kind person. I liked Li Ke Yi more after watching this drama.
3. ML characterisation - He was wary of FL's intentions but his actions contradicted with his earlier instructions to the family secretary.
4. Supporting character - I actually liked ML's family secretary. Fascinating arc & well done to the actress for great performance. I also liked ML's assistant, the orphans and FL's friend from orphanage.
5. Romance - The romance in this drama is sweet including the kisses. I enjoyed watching ML's changing feelings for FL.
6. Editing - Great shots especially the shower scene. Strategically placed items throughout that first theft scene. The pacing was done well too.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - Lin Ruorou was a typical green tea - annoying. I wish Xue Xin was given bigger arc than Lin Rourou.
2. Ending - It was cute but I wanted more from FL regarding her feelings for ML.

Favourite scene
The first time FL showed us her power

Riveting performances but I disliked main characters

I was excited to see Guo Yu Xin's new drama being talked about in reddit. Got to watch it today and I must say that it was a rollercoaster ride. While I enjoyed the performance by both Guo Yu Xin and Liu Yu Hang, this is one of those dramas I am fine watching it once.

What I liked:
1. Acting - I am a fan of Guo Yu Xin so I knew she was going to nail her role here. This is my first time watching Liu Yu Hang and I was impressed by his performance. It broke my heart to see him cry.
2. Romance - For me, it was painful watching their transactional relationship because I felt ML crossed the line a few times and FL was clearly uncomfortable about it. Once they were friends, then I was invested in their relationship. The intimate scenes were full of passion & desire, kudos to GYX & LYH for excellent acting. The height difference was very notable here but wasn't as jarring as Ke Chun - Yu Yin.
3. Supporting characters - I liked ML's two male friends very much. His supposed white moonlight and admirer were ok after all. I also liked FL's grandma.
4. Styling - I really liked ML's styling as it matched his brooding energy. FL's outfits were mostly good except for that swimsuit, which looked like night gown. GYX wore a gliterry pale yellow dress which is memorable but too whimsical.

What I disliked:
1. Breakup - I hated the breakup & longterm separation and I blamed it on FL's immaturity. I understand that she had hard time dealing with her feelings but she shouldn't be mad at ML for too long because it wasn't his fault. That reconciliation scene was too short!
2. Antagonists - Now I see ML's mother as the main antagonist. Wow she was really something and I won't be wishing her Happy Mother's Day tomorrow.
3. Main characters - Now I hate to write this but I didn't like both ML & FL. There was too much misery. ML was too aggressive and unhinged at the start but later was ok once he took on the friend role. I felt like the first act could be shortened so ML could be more likeable. FL was ok at the start but I disliked her for turning her back against ML in the third act.

Favourite scene
When they confessed their feelings after a longterm separation

FL surrounded by toxic people

I watched this drama yesterday as I was in Huang Bo mood. Damn, this drama had negative vibe from start to almost the end. I don't recommend watching this drama.

What I liked:
1. FL characterisation - I liked Shen Xing Chen despite the bad fate that befall her. I wish she had taken the opportunity presented in that third act.
2. Acting - Great acting by 5 prominent characters - FL, ML, white moonlight, ML's parents & FL's teacher.
3. Supporting character - I liked FL's teacher. He had crush on FL but never stepped outside the set boundary.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - OMG that white moonlight is one of the most evil antagonists I have seen in the world of vertical dramas. Bat shit crazy! ML's parents were toxic and selfish. I was shocked by the crime that they committed.
2. ML characterisation - As much as I liked Huang Bo, I disliked this ML from the start. ML's behaviour was like a rollercoaster ride. He was mean at first then loving and at times indifferent.
3. Romance - There were genuine feelings between the couple in the 2nd & 3rd act. However ML was surrounded by toxic people that I felt FL should leave and stay away from them for her sanity in the long run.

Favourite scene
When ML's parents turned their backs on ML & FL. That's their true colour

Great chemistry, well-written plot and beautiful aesthetics

I enjoy Cheng Cheng and Shi Tong's acting and to my surprise, they acted together in this drama. Apparently this drama is a remake of '52 lovers in 4 years' plot. I believe the first version starred Du Ya Fei and Zhang Jin Yi, the fourth version starred Zhang Bei Xi and Liu Ying, and this Cheng Cheng- Shi Tong drama is the fifth version. I watched the fourth and fifth versions and I like this drama way more than the fourth version.

What I liked:
1. FL characterisation - She's smart and self-reliant. I loved that FL is a Chinese Opera Singer who uses a public persona when she works. Shi Tong knows how to choose roles and so far I have enjoyed most of her dramas.
2. Romance - Spicy and sweet. That first intimate scene was hot and I liked how FL acted the morning after. I also loved that they shared a passion in Chinese Opera. I also liked that ML confessed his feelings to FL at 70% mark of the drama.
3. ML characterisation - Oh dear, Cheng Cheng played another mob boss. Good thing this character is different from the other mob bosses that he has played. This one is the most violent. Anyway I liked that ML is supportive of FL's decisions.
4. Styling - This drama was set in Chinese Republican era and the styling was so fabulous! I loved the outfits worn by both FL & ML. My favourite of FL's outfit is the black dress with scallop neckline paired. The fascinators were beautiful.
5. Supporting character - Loved ML's father.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonists - FL's arranged fiancé and his mother are just despicable. However I enjoyed their arc because there was emotional connection between ML and the antagonists.

Favourite scene
When ML saved FL from being attacked by her arranged fiancé

Wonderfully written FL, ML and their romance story

I watched this drama during my first month of vertical drama discovery, back on 17 December 2024. I totally forgot about this drama until I watched Wang Kaimu's drama that co-starred Guo Yuxin. I decided to submit this drama as MLD New Title so MDL users can find and enjoy this drama.

What I liked:
1. Intro scene - One of the best because it set the tone and vibe of the drama. I liked ML's response to his assistant regarding the rumour.
2. ML's characterisation - He was mysterious at first but protective of his wife. Liked that he trusted her without any doubts. It's great to see ML that sets clear boundaries with other women.
3. FL's characterisation - Smart and resilient, thanks to her upbringing. She's also protective of her husband. I liked that she knew how to stand up to bullies.
4. Romance - They treated each other with respect even though their relationship was not a love match. They talked about consent! I like their sweet and cute playful banter. He even made breakfast for his wife.

What I disliked:
1. FL's adoptive family - Manipulative.
2. Green tea - Devious and just annoying.

Favourite scene
When ML took care of drunk FL

Mature jiejie romance with great acting by leads

I was intrigued by this drama because I liked the poster and the drama is about older woman-younger man romance. I had watched dramas by both Yu Xiao Wan and Chen Yun Ting.

What I liked:
1. FL characterisation - She designs jewellery and I enjoyed her "at work" scenes. She is a great boss and a rational person. I liked that FL doesn't get mad when she found out about ML's real identity. She weighs pros and cons of being in a romantic relationship with ML. Great acting by Yu Xiao Wan.
2. Romance - Lusty, loving & mature. I loved ML's dedication towards loving & protecting ML. FL was committed to the relationship once she felt sure & secure - I liked this!
3. ML characterisation - He was smart to offer himself as muse. Though I am not a fan of secret identity, ML didn't drag it out.
4. Styling - Loved FL's outfits as they exude confidence & elegance.
5. Supporting characters - I liked FL's bestie & ML's cousin a lot!

What I disliked:
1. Antagonists - Feifei was too annoying. I also disliked ML's parents.

Favourite scene
When FL confided her feelings after the chandelier incident

Writer trying to do too much. End result is a mess

I got to know about this drama from subreddit CShortDramas. I was excited to see Cao Tian Kai and Wu Tian Hao together in one drama. Overall, the drama was alright though I wish there was better writing.

What I liked:
1. Cao Tian Kai - OMG any scenes of Cao Tian Kai in bedroom were must see. He did alright in this role.
2. Wu Tian Hao - Wow, I appreciate him for taking a different role. In this drama, his character is a submissive. I found him endearing despite his ill intentions.
3. FL's past - To be honest, I find flashbacks to FL's mean attitude were more exciting than her current state.
4. Styling - I was fond of styling for Biscuit Nana, Cao Tian Kai & Wu Tian Hao. The black leather-like jacket that CTK wore with white shirt & black slacks elevated his hotness.

What I disliked:
1. Buscuit Nana - She gave an underwhelming performance for a woman who was pursued by 4 men. She was too cute for my liking. Even scenes between her and Cao Tian Kai lacked spark.
2. Romance - Now I see similarity between this drama and My Mermaid Husband. There were many suitors but the screentime was unequal. There were only 2 suitors worth rooting because the other two didn't evoke any strong romantic feelings between FL and the gut. The romance didn't work for me as I didn't find any chemistry between Biscuit Nana and all her male co-stars.
3. Mystery guy - I just find this arc confusing and badly written.
4. Ending - What a cop out!

Favourite scene
When FL received a video call from Cao Tian Kai

Sweet romance but drama is not memorable

I picked this drama because I discovered it in Xia Jingran's filmography. It had been awhile since I last watched Du Ya Fei's drama. I had some expectations but unfortunately they were not met.

What I liked:
1. Crush - I liked that ML developed crush on FL because of her kindness.
2. Romance - Sweet romance with a lot of light touches and hugging.
3. Styling - Xia Jingran has fabulous hair, which can be seen in this drama. I love her clothes and especially shoes. Fascinating choice considering the height difference between her and Du Ya Fei.
4. Acting - I liked Du Ya Fei and Xia Jing Ran's acting.

What I disliked:
1. Secret identity - After watching plenty of dramas on a regular basis for almost 5 months, I felt that there was nothing new offered in this drama.
2. Antagonist - same old, same old. Jealous of FL.

Favourite scene
When FL first saw her hubby shirtless.

Doctor-soldier romance with mature vibe

I remember watching this drama on the first weekend of April and poof the link was removed 1 or 2 days after. It's no fun because I usually rewatch some parts of drama when writing review and now I wrote based on memory. Anyway it was great watching these seasoned actors in a drama drama.

What I liked:
1. Familiar plot - This drama reminded me a lot of So You Also Like Me, in which FL is doctor while ML is soldier. She even went to conflict zone where ML was stationed.
2. Romance - This drama has mature romance vibe to it. There are sweet & spicy scenes. That makeout session on dining table was hot!
3. Acting - Both Bai Yan and Wang Yi Ran were great in their roles. If I am not mistaken, Bai Yan said some English words in this drama. Was it 'Thank you'? Hhmmm
4. Action - I also liked the action scenes especially the military scenes. Good to see Wang Yi Ran in uniform.

What I disliked:
1. Communication - One of my frustration with this drama is that FL & ML did not communicate at 1 point which led to assumptions.

Favourite scene
Action scenes of ML and his comrades

Reborn tale with reverse roles, violence and good comeuppance

I came across this drama on reddit. The actor and actresses were unfamiliar to me but the comments in Youtube were generally positive. I watched and enjoyed it. However please be informed that there are scenes of violence.

What I liked:
1. ML characterisation - In most vertical dramas, FLs are usually the ones doing the most sacrificing in relationship but not for this drama. It's refreshing to see ML being the "doormat" of the relationship. This is my first time watching Du Pei Yuan and he did well in playing this role. A good balance of kindness and pitiful.
2. FL characterisation - The FL is the scumbag of relationship between her and ML. It's refreshing to see a villainous FL. This is also my first time watching Zhong Ying Ling's drama and she was great in being sinister.
3. Supporting character - The doctor was played by Wei Jia. She left a lasting impression despite short screen time.
4. Ending - Good comeuppance.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonists - Both FL and SML were atrocious. The actor who played SML looked familiar. Could he be Yang Chen, who starred with Si Jia Li in 'But Mr. Shen is too charming'?
2. Torture - Damn the scenes were painful to watch.
3. ML - doctor relationship - I want more!

Favourite scene
The ending
