in the novel, vee had his eyes on mark since mark's freshman year, they were just not close so no opportunity for him to realize it. but when mark started flirting with bar, vee's friend, that was the opportunity! he was jealous, disguising it as concern towards his friend and that's when they got closer and deepen vee's feelings for mark.

but beyond evil is indeed poorly written and directed. the only good things about it are the acting and chemistry between the leads.
