I highly recommend it. The first episode is what got me hooked into this drama, the introduction to the main leads story arc was so neatly done (there are not many dramas out there that has this impressive first episode capable of reeling you in). Aside from that, the story has been very engaging no filler/boring episode, it keeps getting better and better plus intense by the next episode. The chemistry between main leads is fire and their romance pace is so satisfying - slow burn. One thing to note though, there are quite a lot of unlikable characters that will make your blood boil but we're all waiting for each one of these characters to meet their end soon.

The romance between ml and fl is slow paced in other words slow burn. It's satisfying though as we get sweet and romantic moments from them that aren't too overly done or cringey. The chemistry between leads is amazing. There are no kissing scenes yet so far.

I think the same way as you, he is more of a grey character written with complexities rather than a dark character. He used the families to threaten the bad guys for them to speak out the truth quickly as he knows that would be their weakness but we saw how he never actually slaughtered them, he said it himself that he would even protect their families as long as they tell him the truth and he even stepped away to let the emperor's eunuch take over the case.

I don't think you are able to empathize with the ML at all. The ML grew up estranged from his own biological father who mistreats him (suspected physical abuse seeing how he had injuries/bruises when he was young), his biological father doesn't and never liked him at all no matter how he tried to make amends with him. That one night when he was homeless and bruised, he found a home in his uncle's military camp. He literally grew up under his uncles care and for him, his uncle stood in some way like a father. I don't think that kind of familial bond he has with his uncle is simply for 'idolization'. His uncle is a precious family member to him, who gave him a home and a dream. His uncle was treated and killed unjustifiably despite being loyal to the king and contributing to their country. Meanwhile, the courts, still hold corrupt officials and unjust laws, it is not only his uncle that suffered under the hands of the bad guys but their country as well. The Miao family is an example of it. He might have done and made wrong decisions in his past life, but he isn't the worst.
