Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'm not in a good place to give a reply the thought and attention your comment deserves, so I'll come back here in a day or so. I am American, and one of many millions of us who are horrified at the re-election as president of one of the most appalling POS people in the entire country, Donald Trump. It is doubly hard to take as a gay person, since he enables homophobia and trans-hate to a huge degree. His presence in our politics over the last nine years has brought all of the slimy maggots out from under their rocks, and now a lot of them are going to be in positions of power and influence for at least four years.

In short, I'm sort of mourning not only his election, but what his election says about the American people, and it's not good. It's horribly embarrassing. If I had tons of money, I'd consider relocating somewhere less...stupid and bigoted.

Back to the series, I want to say now that your current perception of the quote about straight women from my friend is NOT what was intended by his statement or anything I wrote either. It describes a particular segment of the straight woman portion of the BL-watching audience, not ALL of them by any means. But unfortunately, I think his statement does generally apply to most straight women who write BL novels and screenplays. Both he and I should have been more specific about that.

And believe me, neither he nor I object to suffering, angst, and tragedy in our dramas/movies. But I think you'll agree IT HAS TO BE WELL-WRITTEN AND MAKE SENSE from the characters and situations as presented in the story. THAT is where my friend and I find fault with a great many BLs.

In short, what took place in episodes 3,4,5,6 was mostly incoherent, not well-motivated, and REMAINED unexplained by all the flashback explanation scenes we saw in 7 and 8. Gay men in BLs tend to make HUGE life choices in the wink of an eye, based on assumptions formed from very little information. They don't bother to ask any questions or find out the details. They assume the worst and go flying off, disappearing for decades at a time, based on worst-case interpretations without bothering to get the other side of the story from their supposed beloved or having the decency to say goodbye. This happens over and over and over again in BL world.

I would have had zero problem with any of the sad circumstances portrayed in LFTCOT if they were well-plotted and written. For instance, don't have DH just go disappear without telling that sweet boyfriend why, give me a REASON why he could NOT tell him goodbye. Some unexpected, cataclysmic event or a lie deliberately told by a third party (although again, in BL World, the protagonists rarely go and confront their lover about what they've been told. They assume it's true and leave for ten years.) :D

Yumeno's journey has turned out to be the most interesting of all.

oooh...how original. Lame MDL commenter tactic #5: When unable to rationally dispute an opposing opinion or mockery of one's use of cliche responses like "this isn't your cup of tea," accuse the writer of being overly emotional and out of control.

Cuts no ice with me, "Lana." Your screen name indicates you are female, likely straight fujoshi, who thrills to the sights and sounds of irrational, neurotic, self-inflicted suffering between and among gay men. Of course you adore this show.

My favorite kinds of dramas, gay or straight, contain loads of angst, suffering, sorrow, neuroses, anger, even violence and death if it legitimately serves a coherent, well-plotted story, and the actions of the characters make sense in the context of their experiences within their fictional world. The middle four episodes of this show are incoherent, poorly plotted, and do not make sense given what the audience knows of and about them.

That doesn't bother you because their pain is your g-spot. You don't care how sloppily the writer pleasures you, as long as you are serviced well and attain release. lol This BL is a fujoshi's dream: Gay men acting irrationally and hurting each other with ferocious abandon. I'm happy for you that you enjoyed it.

Did you ignore the 12 years BEFORE Dohoe "rejected" him, only after returning to town and when SJY was standing right there with them? What happened during those 12 years? Nothing? Please. That's partly why it's so obvious this was written by yet another straight woman/fujoshi who writes convoluted fantasies about gay men that have next to nothing to do with reality.

I have already said more than once I don't KNOW that they had a prior romantic/physical relationship during those 12 years, but if they didn't, why was DH hanging around with him all the time? He knew the dude was in love with him. And we're to believe the handsome attorney who could pretty much have any gay man he wanted, wasted 12 years of his life mooning over a man every single day, right there within arm's reach, who refused to reciprocate his affections or desire? Why? What was so attractive and irresistible about DH that would make throwing away 12 years worthwhile?

This is the standard, lame MDL response to criticism of any series. Nothing is any better produced, directed, or acted than anything else, right? If a show has major problems, then it's just "not your cup of tea," right.

Well, what if, as in this case, I loved the first two episodes, the four middle episodes were a mess, and then I loved half of 7 and all of 8? Does that mean it's my "cup of tea," or is it my "half-full cup of tea" or what?

"...the story has some flaws but overall it was pretty good." is not a resoundingly positive summary of this show, is it? Sounds like you tea cup was half-full too. It's OK to say so, and to get specific about those flaws. That's how we grow our perspectives as audience members.

Might as well finish it then. Let me know what you think of the ending. :)

The last two episodes are where it finally gets good again, as it was in the first two episodes, which had me hooked. It's the middle four that had me going wtf? Of course, there are and should be all sorts of movies in every genre imaginable, but that doesn't mean it's rude or mean or something to watch with a critical eye and express one's perspective on where a film or series went off the rails. This one went off and came back on again. The final episode is one of the sweetest, yet believable and not fluffy, BL finales I've seen.

Exactly. That's a great list of unanswered questions. I think you're supposed to make up the fujoshi-friendly answers in your head and pretend they were on the screen and in the plot.

It's crucial to note that the writer/director of this show, a straight woman, is also the writer of the most fucked-up, emotional torture porn BL ever made, To My Star 2.

It's gay-men-are-sadists-and-masochists-and-I-love-watching-them-suffer porn for homophobic fujoshis. That said, I actually enjoyed much of the first two episodes, and the last part of 7 and all of 8. I'm now a big fan of Lee Seon, who is as talented an actor as he is interestingly gorgeous to look at.
